this isn't a well worded post but i'm thinking about how horatio and ophelia are opposites in every way. horatio is the audience stand-in and receives the exposition from the other characters as an outsider. ophelia has been in elsinore all along but is still treated as inferior by her father and brother, and she becomes the mouthpiece for the audience when she goes mad and puts into words what the audience is thinking about the other characters. horatio is an outsider as a lower class foreigner, but gains a way into the plot through his relationship with hamlet. ophelia is upper class and danish, but she's shunned and shunted away from the plot because of her relationship with hamlet. they both revolve around hamlet, but their fates are the opposite. ophelia drowns quietly offstage once hamlet is gone, and her death is told by gertrude without a voice of her own. horatio is forced to live on and tell the story of hamlet's death to the next king.
