History of Mosquito-Borne Illnesses
Mosquitoes have been present around the world for as long as humans have been around, probably even longer. When people first came to Illinois, Malaria was a huge problem because of how swampy the area was, but by the 1800s the CDC began draining the swamps and by 1951, malaria was completely eradicated in Illinois. However, an outbreak of St. Louis Encephalitis occurred in the 1970s and a West Nile Virus outbreak came in 1990.
