Danny Lyon
Lyon, D. (1971). Conversations with the dead. 1st ed. Phaidon Press Limited, p.179.
This is an example of the way I chose to shoot my own images. I feel this relates to my project idea of being pinned up against the wall with nothing but just your face showing who you are.
Lyons created a book focusing on prison life including the photographs, letters and drawings from prisoners.

Final Print 5 and 6
As these images was from the same negative it lead to the settings being the same.
These are the only 2 test prints I done for my 5th and 6th image.
This is my 5th image. There are marks and scratches on the negative however I felt this was my strongest image.
This is my 6th image.

Final Print 4
This is my test print. Due too my images being for the same negative it gave me the advantage of doing less test prints due to the photos being in the same location with the same lighting.
This test print the top half is exposed for 10 seconds while the bottom is 15.
These test prints are to show the colour cast.
This is my final image. There is a slight yellow cast to the image. However I feel this so due to the negative

Final print 3
These are my test prints. The left print is 10 seconds to 60 seconds. The middle is 10 seconds again however a different colour cast. The final strip is 20 seconds through to 40.
These test strips are to show the colour changes I needed to complete.
This is the final image. All my images sit well colour wise however this one image did standout to the rest due to being a bit brighter.

Final Print 2
This is the test strip I completed for my second image.
For this test strip I started with 10 seconds through to 50 seconds.The overall image is very blue.
These are the test strips I completed changing the colour cast. I found the colour changing very complicated due to a small change could change the whole image.
This is my final image. There are a few marks on the negative however I could not change the image due to the other images being out of focus.

Final Print 1
This is the first and final print for my series.
These are the 3 test strips I completed. The first strip on the left is from 5 seconds through to 25 seconds. The overall print is very blue/green meaning I will need to adjust this.
The second strip (Middle) is 30 seconds. This is now to dark as I adjusted the settings. I Adjusted the settings again and this then lead to my final test strip.
This is my final image for 1 of 6 of my series. The image itself is still slightly too dark and off colour however I feel I could not adjust this anymore due to the negatives being dark.
Exposure- 29 seconds
Cyan- 0
Yellow- 2
Magenta- 50

Belin
Ewing, W. (2006). Face The New Photographic Portrait. Thames & Hudson, p.89.
Belin created a photography series called “Mannequin”. Although the series has an overall name the images themselves do not have individual names. This series captured the portraits of models from an agency and mannequins. The series focused of capturing the similarities between a human model and Mannequin, how mannequins are starting to look more life like and real. The series itself is made up of single portrait images however it feel it would be better suited if the images sat in a side by side diptych.
Ewing, W. (2006). Face The New Photographic Portrait. Thames & Hudson, p. 90.
From this series I took away the idea of how a true models beauty is compared to a doll mannequin. With a lot of self image issues in society nowadays a lot of mannequin dolls are made up to have the perfect skin colour, the perfect figure and facial features so my view on this series is top show how girl are made to think that they want to look “perfect” like a mannequin doll.

Experimental Print
These are 2 test strips from the same roll of film. Due to my image focusing on the portraits, I needed to take inconsideration what my subject was wearing. As my images would sit in a series of 3. My images will need to be taken from the same negative. Once I completed a final print (Image previous) I then realised that the other images for my second image is out of focus.
The test strip on the left is 5 seconds through to 25 seconds long. I needed to adjust the colour settings meaning another test strip.

Experimental Print
This is the first full print I decided to do for my series.
These are the 2 first test strips I completed. The test strip on te left is from 10 seconds through to 80 seconds. The second strip is 20 seconds.
20 seconds is for how long I exposed this print for I needed to change the colours due to the print appearing green.
These are the second 2 test strips. These show the colour change. The strip on the right is the final print I decided to do a full print. This took a long time to even come to this colour where it was somewhat acceptable, I feel that printing my images was difficult because of my negatives being so dark.
This is the final print of this image. The overall image is still considerably green, however I feel I could not change this due to changing the settings each just 1 down, it would still create a very drastic effect on my images.

The Series- Platon
Platon is a well known portrait photographer focusing on capturing images of celebrities.
Platon’s work has influenced my project because of his choice in lighting. The features of the face are very strong some of his images include dark and light shadows this is something I will need to consider when taking my own images.
All-about-photo.com. (2019). Platon (Antoniou) Photographer | All About Photo. https://www.all-about-photo.com/photographers/photographer/377/platon-antoniou
This image holds a strong eye contact with the subject looking directly into the camera while some of his facial features are disfigured due to the smoke. The image itself is black and white creating highlights across the subjects face.
This image in relation to my project idea is not clear however from Planton’s work has lead me to question how I want my own images to look. The questions raised for my own images are
How much of my subjects face do I want to be clear?
What eye contact do I want to show with my image?
How close do I want my subject to be to the camera?
Platonphoto.com. (2019). platon. http://www.platonphoto.com/gallery/portraits/politics/billclinton/
For this image the subject is backlit and sat down, with the way the photograph has been taken suggests power from the subject. This is something I need to take into consideration when it comes to taking my images as of how I want my images and subjects to come across. Although the subject is backlit there is no harsh shadows or dark lines.
As of what the subject is wearing the tie happens to match the colour in the background

Contact sheet 2
This is my second roll of film. The negatives however are still too dark but the images themselves are still visible.
This is the first test 2 test strips I completed for my second rolls of film. The strip on the left is for 2 seconds through till 8 seconds. The strip on the right is for 10 seconds through to 40 seconds.
These next 3 test strips are for colour change the one on the left is for 27 seconds, the middle is 40 seconds and the final strip is for 35 seconds.
This is the first contact sheet. The overall colour is very blue meaning I would need to adjust he settings a bit more. Where the negative was dark yet again it left my images to have some good prints and others to have a yellowish pure effect.
This is the second contact sheet for these negative. They still have the same colour contrast from the first contact sheet.
As an overall evaluation of my images. I feel the prints let them down a considerable amount, the negatives themselves did not come out as well I wanted them too either. If I was to complete this project again I would research more into how to complete flash photography better.
I focused on capturing my subject at different angle as well as turning the camera to be landscape rather than portrait.

Contact Sheet 1
This is the first roll of film I shot. All of the photos did not come out correctly due to using a too fast of a shutter speed.
These 3 prints are my test prints. From left to right the time goes up the first strip on the left is 2 seconds-6 seconds. the middle strip is 4 seconds-12 seconds and the final strip is 5 seconds going up too 25 seconds.
Through all the test strips you can see where the shutter is closed.
These next lot of test strips are the colour change it was very hard to determine this due to the negatives being too dark, giving almost a burn feel to the images.
This is the first contact sheet majority of my images are unclear this is from the negatives being too dark and the shutter being shown.
This is the other half of my negatives contact sheet I had to reprint some of the images to get my final 1/2 negatives on.
As an overall I feel the images would of come out well if I changed the shutter.

The Series- Colour Printing introduction
From this colour cast diagram, I am able to determine what settings I will need to change to ensure I get the correct outcome for my images.
These are the first 2 test prints I created with a colour negative.
The first strip (top) shows the time between 2 seconds till 10.
Aperture = 8
Yellow = 40
Magenta = 45
Cyan = 0
From this test sheet I can see that I need to expose my image for longer.
The bottom test strip I tried a different technique from 5 seconds to 30 seconds. from this test strip the image I slightly burred this means that when the paper was being exposed the paper moved. There is also a brown burn mark this indicates that my paper has been exposed to light before the full exposure.
From this test strip I now know I need to expose my paper for 15 seconds.
This is the final outcome for my test strip.
Exposure time = 15 seconds
Aperture = 8
Magenta = 45
Yellow = 41
Cyan = 0
For this task we were given a colour negative to print and asses our image to change the colour setting to be correct.
From completing this task, I am able to identify what colour setting I will need to change to ensure the correct outcome.
This is the first print I created showing a quick test strip, from 2 seconds through till 8.
Aperture = 2.8
Yellow = 70
Magenta = 65
Cyan = 0
The reason this test strip printed the way it has is because of the filter.
This is the second strip.
Exposure time = 3 seconds
Aperture = 2.8
Yellow = 70
Magenta = 65
Cyan = 0
Yet again this print is very strongly red, this is due to the filter.
This print has a layer of blue covering the image from this I know I need to change the setting to -yellow. The image is also slightly too light.
Aperture = 2.8
Exposure time = 3 seconds
Yellow = 70
Magenta = 75
Cyan = 0
This print has a darker blue colour, this is due to me adjusting the exposure time to be 5 seconds rather than 3 like the previous. From this test I will need to -yellow
Exposure time = 5 seconds
Aperture = 2.8
Yellow = 65
Magenta = 75
Cyan = 0
The print still includes the colour blue however it appears to be getting brighter. From this I still need to -yellow
Exposure time = 5 seconds
Aperture = 2.8
Yellow = 55
Magenta = 75
Cyan = 0
The print still shows the colour blue however a shade of green appears. I will continue to -yellow.
Exposure time = 5 seconds
Aperture = 2.8
Yellow = 50
Magenta = 75
Cyan = 0
This print now shows a cyan colour. From this print I will -yellow and -magenta
Exposure time = 5 seconds
Aperture = 2.8
Yellow = 40
Magenta = 55
Cyan = 0
This is my final print and has an overall colour of grey/ green. From this I will -yellow and -magenta a little bit.
Exposure time = 5 seconds
Aperture = 2.8
Yellow = 30
Magenta = 50
Cyan =0
