Intelligent failures are important for growth.
It comes from experiment in something you are not 100% sure. It should not be risky experimenting, where the consequences are just inconvenient but not awful.
• hypothesis-driven
• new territory
• small as possible, as to not waste resources
• in pursuit of a goal — learning a new sport for example

Wicked movie part 1 thoughts
Nice movie additions
+ Buck says “because you’re so beautiful” to Nessa after seeing Glinda kiss Fyero
+ explaining why Dillamond mispronounced Glinda bc he’s a goat, seems like a more sensitive professor this way
+ Professor Dillamond doesn’t have a weirdly close relationship with Elphaba but was talking to animal friends in “something bad”. This is more appropriate as she is the professor
+ made other characters have weird non-real words except Elphaba, making her seem like the only smart / normal one, but also pts to her being part non-Ozian
+ Elphaba’s makeover doesn’t require her to change her glasses or entire look. She is beautiful naturally. More feminist this way
+ Made Glinda more like-able by having her admit she was Elphaba’s friend in the first song, by having her seem more empathetic to Elphaba in the dance scene (maybe the acting), having her seem like she wanted to be genuinely be nice to Elphaba and was slighted by Elphaba first, saying “just bc it’s your secret doesn’t mean it’s true”, having her send a sentimental note to Elphaba as she boarded the train to Oz, by not having her sing “I hope you’re happy” with so much anger but actually genuine care in the last song, having her give Elphaba a cloak as she leaves on the broom, having Elphaba say “it’s me you want” to distract the guards showing their genuine friendship still. Also she comes off more child-like and innocent, like in the secret sharing. She says “oh hello”
+ tribute to Idina Mendel and old Glinda in Wizomania
+ Made “good” and “bad” seem more gray by introducing more flaws for Elphaba, like her constantly in interrupting ppl, being emotional, defensive, and making it seem like she stole Fyero intentionally more, annoyingly correcting Glinda’s grammar
+ explaining the back story for why Elphaba cares for animals so with her nurse being a bear, as well as the bullying as a child
+ having Fyero seem more charming initially and less dumb, and explaining why Elphaba might like him with their encounter in the forest
+ Glindas possy friends -> friends with Elfie and Fyero next to each other
+ better explaining her enrollment
+ Morrible taking credit was devious of her power, levitation, proving yourself, and manipulation with emotion
+ diversity in Asian, black, fat friend, gay friend
+ Showing her being bullied and love for wizard at young age
Better visualization in general -
+ being able to see scary monkeys and animals in general
+ being able to visualize the gimmicks of the wizard and emerald city more
+ We can see Professor Dillamond as a goat
+ beautiful library dance scene!!!
+ seeing close up of ppls faces and emotions
+ being able to see visions that Elphaba had like prophesy
+ being able to see the cool projection of voice in clouds in the end by Madame Morrible
+ skin color change during de-greenify part
+ loathing song visuals
+ Glinda bowing for people
——————
What I didn’t like
- Made Elphaba’s freeing the cub more intentional use of magic, but weird that she singled out Fyero, her best friend’s bf
—————-
New ways I relate to it I didn’t at first
+ Controlling your passions / emotions, like Elphaba, is important for channeling your magic in real life too. Emotions are your motivation
+ Glinda is like the business person and Elphaba is the engineer in corporate America. One is not better than the other. I feel like Glinda comes across more likeable this time, but maybe I’m also different. Both are equally important to being an unstoppable team
Observations
• Glinda likes air bc she’s ditzy and airy
• Adding explanation in letters home about enrollment
• dancing as the leader in the oz dust ballroom
• parallels of joining to meet wizard and leaving with Elfie at the end; makeover with the clothes and then the cloak
• changed outfit to merge Elfie and Glinda’s styles after they become friends
• inner child guides Elphaba when she almost dies

Photo class learnings
Time of day and location
• if cloudy day start 2 hrs before sunset and if sunny 1 hr before sunset
• look for soft trees that let light in, diffused light that is back lit
• Avoid nature walls or actual walls / fences in the background
Composition
• make sure hands are not cropped out in at the hip crop photos. No weird cropping
• leave a lot of negative space
• people like centered photos to hang up; if it’s not centered balance it with another weight
• do rule of thirds using head at the top third
• always do more sky than ground in photos
Camera settings
• use auto eye focus with the Sony camera
• shoot 3x the focal length; shorter focal lengths mean you can get up close but also more shadows come in. For light and airy, 85 mm is good
• have people lined up as a yard stick straight in a photo for the focus to line up, even when using really large aperture — most often from 1.4-2.8 and 1.8 for majority of the time
• for white balance, also look at the skin tone. Use Kelvin instead of auto because at sunset auto goes too cool. Start at 6500k and err on the side of too warm instead of cool
• shoot break outs at the end while aperture gets larger
• expose for their skin tone. Make sure you don’t see whiteness or pastiness on the face
• adjust the white balance temperature to slightly more magenta if it’s slightly green (up and down to 0.75)
Clothing and props
• bring puppet or toy for kids and white blanket
• wear neutral or soft colors. Bright colors bounce on people’s faces in photos
• use a white blanket, or green grass reflects on their skin
• neutral ground especially when it’s cloudy
Editing
• lift shadows in background
• up green hue, down the saturation and up the luminance
• out of focus background makes the soft and airy look

Montessori Baby
1. Create yes spaces where the baby is free to explore everything. Keep toys and games on low shelves. Avoid gates or use subtle cages, large spaces.
2. Things you need:
- low table for baby to eat food when they can sit
- low shelves
- long horizontal mirror
3. Observe, store and rotate
- about 6 of their favorites in a low shelf for you to rotate out
- if a baby is no longer interested, store it
- display mobiles above their movement area or store on a wall
4. Room by room for babies
Entrance:
- basket for baby shoes
- low hooks
Movement room
- Mat for moving
- low mirror
- mobile
- basket of toys
- somewhere to pull up on like bench or chair
- art on the wall
- foam, colorful squares are tripping hazards, and provide too much noise
Kitchen
- low cupboard for baby things
- a place for baby to explore while we cook
- low table / chair
- avoid traditional high chairs
Bedroom
- floor bed or low frames so crawling baby can crawl on it
- don’t hang mobile over sleeping space
- 12-15 months move to toddler bed
- do naps in crib so they can transition to it if they are used to bassinet
Changing area
- changing pad on the ground ideally or adults hips
- dressing stool for baby to dress themselves
- artwork should depict real things baby sees
5. Room by room for young toddlers
Kitchen
- stools and step ladders so kids can be involved
- utensils and cups/plates in low shelves
Play area
- have books to rotate out in a small shelf area
- make it super safe for a climbing / standing toddler
- have a vertical mirror
Bathroom
- potty area
Entrance
- low hooks and basket low for shoes for kids to use
- mirror here
Outside
- tricycle for them to use
- start a nature collection
6. Montessori parenting is all about respecting the child and trying to understand her by:
- Respect their exploration and don’t interrupt them
- Instead of complimenting, offer encouragement like “I knew you could do it!” Or sports cast
- give them options to make decisions
- be slow and deliberate in touching the child
- allow them to trust their environment and then themselves, to create confidence. Let me do it own their own!
- modeling adult behavior by doing things in front of them and admitting when you’re wrong
- allow them to feel hurt and cry, saying “you hit your head and it hurt”, validating them
- allow them to stop and look at things that catch their attention
7. Set limits for safety in the environment and redirect them to something they can do instead of what they can’t do
8. Allow older siblings to not like the baby but not to behave badly. We should also emphasize the kids take care of each other, not just the older one watching the younger one.
9. Keep things decluttered - a place for everything and everything in its place
10. Respect the child by telling her/him what you’re doing, when you’re leaving, when you’ll be back etc.

Secrets of a baby whisperer
1. Give your baby a tour of your home; respect them like an adult
2. Finish prepping everything 1 month before delivery so you can focus on bonding with your baby
3. Create structure for babies to calm them. This will help you understand his patterns. EASY: eat, activity, sleep, you
4. There are 4 types of temperaments: angel, fussy, spirited
5. SLOW: stop, listen, observe, what’s up. Basically listen to baby’s cries to understand what the differences are. Let baby self soothe.
6. Create a sleep routine to help your baby fall asleep.
7. Bathe your child before they sleep to help them wind down:
- Lower your baby into the bath in a sitting position feet first. Back first is very disorienting.
- Use a washcloth on his hair.
- NEVER leave baby alone in bathtub.
- Avoid getting water in his ears.

Recent photo learnings
- take more small people, landscape shots showing a location’s beauty, esp when there’s landscape with good framing
- white colors in backgrounds that are also blurry do well for light and airy
- do blurry, up the shadows of backgrounds for light and airy
- wearing white good for light and airy. White backgrounds are good for light and airy too
- be careful of harsh sun and shadows
- push families close together, touching as much as possible. Especially for couples too or it looks stiff and awkward
- walking and facing camera is super awkward shot for people
- be careful of how you crop the photo! Don’t be dumb
- for larger families increase the aperture number! you used a very small aperture for the family portraits with Allison’s family
- look to fix people’s hair and get phones out of the photo
- bring bribes for children and a toy for peek a boo
- be wary of sun spots with the sun being too big
- be wary of long shadows in photos
- be cognizant of the family members touching each other and being close, not scattered out
- be cognizant of how trees will get in the way. Avoid tree trunks that sprout out of heads
- getting the pose just right is more important than taking multiple photos

Breastfeeding
- don’t bring yourself to baby; bring baby to you
- make sure baby is facing you tummy to tummy; eating with head turned is not comfortable
- baby’s head should be higher than its other parts for optimal feeding
- hold your breasts with one hand, baby with another
- squeeze areola when baby mouth is too small
- tickle the bottom lip of the baby to get it to open its mouth really wide
- babies will suck for nutrition, ie nutritive sucking, as well as for comfort, ie non-nutritive sucking. After 10 minutes, if it starts to get painful it’s probably non-nutritive sucking
- indicators that it’s working: 5-6 wet diapers, weight gain, satisfied baby that sleeps
- if the baby gets hungry quickly within 1/2 hr to 1 hr, or if there are no indicators that it’s full, you may need to supply top feed, i.e. an extra 30 ml of milk or formula bc the baby is not sucking the last bit of milk well
- any where between 60-120 ml after the first month per feeding, every 2-6 hrs is normal for the baby
- burp the baby either lying over shoulder, sitting, or lying down. It’s needed even for breastfeeding, and especially when nipple of bottle doesn’t have milk
- having baby skin to skin helps with soothing and should get them to naturally breast feed too
- massage your beasts to help get milk, ie hand expression. Especially massage the lower side bc it doesn’t drain as easily.
- different kinds of pumps, including hand and haakaa only
- you often think latching is the problem when it’s actually supply. Increase supply by pumping frequently and then retry latching
- if bottle feeding, feed on both sides like breastfeeding
- bad latching habits and not breastfeeding early on leads to low supply
- after breastfeeding established, it’s ok to introduce a pacfier

Positive discipline
- model good behavior for your kids
- tell kids what to do, not just what to not do, when they’re doing something you don’t want them to do
- redirect when they’re doing something you don’t want them to do
- say yes whenever possible to avoid meltdowns
- don’t overpraise what they do; sports cast by saying “you drew a circle!” to acknowledge you see what they are doing
- don’t bark orders. Imply things like “oh those toys aren’t put away” and the toddler will be happy to help out
- don’t issue time out as punishment. Instead use “time in.” Acknowledge tantrums or feelings, and let the feelings pass before you try to teach your child. Show the child the natural consequences of their actions and help them rectify the situation as you would do by providing options like “should we get some ice for your brother who you hit?”
- Set boundaries if someone is actively getting hurt. Say “we don’t hit. Hitting hurts.”

Public speaking tips from Ted Talks
Connection
Make a connection by showing the human being inside you, or else the audience will not listen to you
It’s as simple as smiling and making eye contact
Don’t over-share vulnerable stories if your healing and growth is dependent on the audience helping you process
Humor also builds connection
Stories
Know why you’re telling the story and how you want someone to feel
Enough detail without too much
Keep stories linear
Character with empathy
Problem
End with resolution
Explanation
Say something controversial first to stir up curiosity to explain
Persuasion (logic) structures
start with a story to explain an example of a broader pattern we see
4 things we know that are debunked to make way for the alternative
Revelation
the wonder walk: going through examples, or lists of things you didn’t know to build a sense of wonder. They should be tied together with a theme

Prenatal classes
Positions for pain
- back rubs
- cervical pushes
Exercises for better labor
- walk or stand at least 1 hr per day in 3rd trimester (softens cervix)
- sex (softens cervix)
- stand against desk and waddle
Oxytocin stimulant in labor
- dark rooms
- calm, phones off environment
- less people socially around
Stages of labor
- early: < 5 cm, can last days
— labor cervix is thinning, can take a few days
— water breaking can still mean another 48 hours
— bloody show with mucus = labor soon
— don’t need to do anything except quiet room, away from distractions
— eat while you still can and pee often for contractions to work better
- active labor: dilating 5 - 10 cm, epidural
— at 5-6 cm dilated, you progress 1 cm an hour (corrected Friedman’s curve)
— you start pushing at 10 cm usually
— epidural in this stage only if early on, as risks with epidural
— if not, use tubs, shower, birth balls, different positions, and breathing techniques
- second stage labor: pushing
— head is out and needs just 3 - 4 cms to go; during this stage hopefully the head can just come out on its own without pushing
— 1/3 come out with cord around neck; it’s ok! Delay cord cutting for oxygen to baby
— contraction flips baby and then push the rest out
— placenta comes 5 mins after baby, usually quick, sometimes need to push
Postnatal
— have baby sit with you in quiet, dark, and close for 20 minutes
— for latching wait for baby to open mouth really wide and pop them onto the breast, making sure they don’t just eat nipple
— get used to feeling for how empty your milk is and emptying your breast with your hand
— normal things: cross eyed, some murmurs, blue babies, spastic baby breathing
— use warm towel to wash baby lightly; test heat of things on inner arm
— make sure baby is comfortable with multiple people
— swaddling works for some babies but not all, depends on what it was like in the uterus
— do kegels and pelvic floor exercises after birth
— rest for up to 6 weeks after to speed up recovery
— save diapers by pressing on baby’s bottom during a poop
— burp babies from low to high on back
— baby exercises and massages are helpful for the baby’s limbs

Versailles
Passion of Louis 15
King Louis XV was a hunter, had a group of close friends, became king at 11 due to siblings dying of measles. He had many mistresses and was very religious, so refused to take communion for 30 years out of guilt. He ran an organized prostitution ring with young females, acquired by Madame Pompadour. There was attempted assassination by Damien, who was tortured for it.
Rooms of Louis 14
To become an artist at the palace, you need to paint a bust or show your artistry.
Dauphin = crown Prince
