There is no room for tradition in animal care.

Animal care should not be stagnant. It should always be evolving and improving.

This applies to breeders, hobbyists, “casual” owners, everyone. It also applies to anyone who keeps animals for profit. If animals are raised to be eaten, they should still have the most up-to date care available.

If you find something that works, great! Use it, recommend it, whatever. But keep doing research. Keep learning and trying to improve. There are very few things that were done 50 years ago, even 20 years ago that have not changed or been improved upon since then.

If a breeder, store, rescue, etc. tells you that they’ve been doing something a certain way for more than a decade, start questioning.

Guinea Pig Health & Medical Supply List - Common problems and treatments

Basic

Q Tips

Cotton Padding (Use as bandages) (Nonstick)

Nail clippers

Important 

Infection such as mange can cause excessive scratching. Scratching can cause Guinea pigs to go into seizure and seizures will stop their hearts. Always cover ‘scratch-able’ problems. Do not allow your guinea pig to scratch.

Milk thistle

Supports liver function in pigs which are emaciated or have not been eating properly in a decent while

(Helpful if rescuing a guinea from a person with inadequate care)

Goopy/Crusty Eyes

Q Tip soaked in saline and gently brushed over closed eyes to rinse

Neosporin

Cuts/Scrapes

Cotton pad and gently brushed over the cut/scrape

No excess because it will get on bedding – can choose to cover with bandage

Treats mouth thrush (crust around lips that is not food/white abnormality inside of mouth)

UTI’s (Common more in females) cause urine buildup on their bottoms and they sit in the damp and mess which causes red/soreness

1 capsule emptied into dish and mixed with a little water

Separate into 6 portions and allow the Guinea to drink this 2 times a day for 3 days – If problem persists see a vet
