and i thought it was interesting as it shows how human they are

but also it kinda made me think a lot because i have a very similiar behaviour but i was never diagnosed with ADHD/ADD

but thanks to you a lot of things in my life make sense, kinda???

Hi anon! I’m glad I could help! :) But I would also like to let you know that a lot of things I talked about in the post can be completely different things and just kind of go along with ADHD, and if you relate to all of them I would suggest maybe getting that checked out because undiagnosed ADHD can cause problems! Of course I only chipped off the top of the iceberg when it comes to ADHD, which is why I’m currently making a part two, so if you’re still questioning definitely wait for that, cause it’ll probably be posted in a few days!

Can't even explain how excited I got when I saw a post about ADHD in the NCT-tag. Did you know that GOT7's Jackson and Super Junior's Henry have confirmed they've been diagnosed? I was also thinking Mark! and since you mentioned Stray Kids for some reason Jisung gives me the vibes too. He seems very similar to me but his social anxiety seems to play a big part in how he expresses it.

Idols I Think Have ADHD/ADD

PART ONE

(Brought to you by someone with ADHD) 

These are just my opinions. As someone with ADHD, I’m mostly using this as a way to spread awareness about the struggles people with ADHD go through.

This list will mostly only have male idols in it, since it’s harder to diagnose ADHD in women/girls.

Number One: Hwang Hyunjin from Stray Kids

While his act is most often passed off as being dramatic, I’ve noticed that he shows common signs of ADHD. From stimming, to hyperfocusing, he shows the strongest signs of having ADHD.

The reason why ADHD is most commonly diagnosed in boys is because they show the most “attention-seeking” side of the disorder. Hyunjin definitely shows that side.

I’ve noticed that he tends to zone out or seem like he’s “loading.” This is a common misconception from the eyes of someone who doesn’t have ADHD. While it may look like he’s just confused to someone who doesn’t have ADHD, to someone with ADHD it looks like he’s doing something called hyperfocusing. Hyperfocusing is when the brain locks onto a specific thing and cannot, for the life of it, get away from this idea. This can cause utter confusion and slowness in thought. It takes us a moment to snap out of it, and if there’s no time to do that, we end up wandering around trying to figure out what’s going on. This can be very stressful, as it brings us out of the moment and makes us look dumb.

Stimming. Stimming is one of the main signs someone has ADHD. Stimming is caused by the brain not knowing how to distribute emotions, so it distributes that with motions and sounds that are usually involuntary. Stims can include a variety of different things, but I noticed that Hyunjin has a lot of vocal stims. And his vocal stims are usually negative, from screaming when he’s stressed/scared, to going “WHOO!” when he’s under a lot of pressure. His movement stims usually include flapping his hands, doing a movement that i call “conducting” because of the motion that it looks like you’re conducting, and flailing his body around.

Along with hyperfocusing, I’ve noticed that he has gone into episodes while on camera. ADHD episodes usually go as follows. Staring state, can’t comprehend what’s happening, disassociated and distracted, recognizing distraction, disassociation, unable to think, frustration, starts to get worked up, sensory overload, jumbled thoughts/ideas, starts to get upset, then the embarrassment of getting upset, trying to hide the embarrassment (usually by laughing), and finally the depressive spirals. When he looks like he’s “zoning out,” it’s possible he’s having an episode. Episodes can be triggered for multiple reasons, but one of them being loud noises/lots going on. The brain can’t comprehend what’s going on, so it shuts down because it’s overwhelmed.

Number Two: Mark Lee from NCT

Mark Lee, instead of ADHD, I’m pretty sure he shows signs of having ADD. He’s not that hyperactive and shows more symptoms of the anxiety/overwhelming part of the disorders.

Anxiety is a common go-along with ADHD/ADD. The anxiety can be shown in multiple ways. From constant fidgeting, to shaking, to always looking suspicious or scared of something. Anxiety can be a breaking symptom of ADHD/ADD. It’s taken very seriously, as untreated anxiety can lead to worse mental health issues such as depression and suicidal thoughts.

Sudden pauses and inability to correlate thoughts is a big one. This can be frustrating for someone with ADHD/ADD and is one of the main causes of breakdowns.

If someone with the disorder cannot get a thought out properly, they often feel guilt or Rejection Sensitive Dysphoria (RSD), especially if the space is in front of lots of people. Rejection sensitive dysphoria is when you can’t handle rejection well. Someone with RSD tends to get very upset if someone criticizes them, which often leads to them trying to maintain a “perfect” image. This can mean that they try to make everyone admire them because they are afraid of rejection. Mark shows signs of RSD, from being easily embarrassed, frustrated, and anxious when he can’t do something.

Overwhelming situations can be a make it or break it situation for someone with ADHD/ADD. This makes being a k-pop idol a very stressful situation, even more stressful than a neurotypical idol. Especially because Mark is always surrounded by a good bit of people, he probably experiences lots of burn out and anxiety. This makes things worse if he is undiagnosed.

Chapter  One  ---  Room

“Behind closed doors, this school isn’t truly what it seems to be. Watch your step, young one, there are dangers lurking about the halls.”

A young girl reached out into the infinite desert, chasing after that one last drop of hope. It zips through the dry air. Teasing her, messing with her, mocking her. Nothing but lies and deception, this drop of hope. It only brought her farther and farther away from where she wanted to be, but she couldn’t help her curiosity. Her poor, pure heart. All knitted together with twine, just barely holding on. She reached out one last time, and it stopped. She wrapped her hand around the small, measly drop of hope, terrified of letting it go. Like a fly, it bounced around her closed palm, but eventually settled down. Opening her hand, she found a teardrop-shaped gem, just barely the size of her thumbnail. It wasn’t what she was expecting, but she certainly wasn’t complaining. The young girl promised to never lose it, even if the cost was her life.

The quiet, open halls of the dormitory were ominously frigid.

A young boy with dark hair gripped the handle to his suitcase even tighter, his knuckles turning a rich shade of white. He glanced at each tall, numbered door until he found the one he was looking for. The archway of the door was hand-carved, by the looks of it, and the knocker was a bronze bull. This is where he would be staying for the next 4 years, supposedly. After all, turning down a scholarship isn’t a wise choice, and he wouldn’t consider himself to be unwise.

Reaching for the doorknob, he twisted it gently, taking a deep breath before pushing the door open.

The room he was looking at was open and tall, but nothing too big. There was a bed on either side of the room, one of the beds messy and not made and the other appeared to be untouched. Glancing around further, he noticed a door on what was assumed to be his side of the room. He approached this door, twisting the knob and opening it.

Well, let’s just say that wasn’t the greatest decision.

He locked eyes with another boy, probably around his own age, standing in front of an elegant vanity set. His eyes glistened from the lit candles on each side of the mirror, and he wore an outfit fit for a prince. They stared for what seemed like ages before the elegant, almond-haired boy spoke up. His voice was as soft as a lamb’s coat, yet sharp as a rose’s thistles.

“Well then,” He spoke, “I suppose that’s one way to say hello. I am assuming that you are my new flatmate, is that correct?”

The boy nodded with odd eyes, stunned at the other’s voice.

“I suppose that settles it.” He held out a hand to shake, which was shaken lightly and formally. “I’m Park Jisung. Welcome to Ravenwood Academy. It’s a pleasure to meet you.”

“N-Nice to meet you too, I’m Zhong Chenle.” Chenle sputtered, earning a charming laugh from Jisung.

“No offense here, but you sound frightened. I assure you there’s nothing to be scared about.” Grabbing a diamond earring from the vanity counter, he turned and faced the mirror, putting the earring in. “What are you majoring in?”

“Umm...Sign language.”

Jisung perked up at the mention of sign language, his head snapping back like an owl. He smiled from ear-to-ear, the candles bursting with light.

“Oh, how wonderful! Looks like we’ll be having an awfully similar schedule. Now if you would excuse me, I need to leave the washroom.”

“R-right.” Chenle moved out of the way, watching closely as Jisung walked out and headed over to his bed.

“Could you blow those candles out for me, please?”

“Sure.”

“Y/N!!!” Renjun ran towards you in the busy hall, practically tackling you because of how fast he was going. He spun you around in a tight hug, a bright smile plastered onto his face. You hold in your urge to scream.

Since when could he pick you up so easily?

Fixing your glasses, you grab your backpack from your locker and slam the door shut. “You ready to go?”

“I think so.” He spoke softer than usual, hesitating shyly before grabbing your hand and holding it. You giggle, intertwining your fingers with his and dragging him towards the door.

Finally breaching that hellhole of a place, you both take a deep breath of fresh air, walking away from the school while having a bit of a chat. The mid-spring air was crisp and nostalgic, which made it perfect hand-holding weather. Renjun playfully leaned against you, trying to redirect you towards the park you were passing. An equally special place for both of you. It’s where you met him, after all.

“Renjun, no, it’s Wednesday. We have school tomorrow.”

“Come onnn~” He whined, pouting, “We can study there for a while. Besides, it’s been a while since we’ve properly hung out together.”

You chortled, stopping and looking towards the park. “I mean, I guess it couldn’t hurt. But, I have to be home by dinner or my parents are gonna freak.”

“I am well aware of that.” The boy squeezed your hand twice, a signal you two came up with oh-so long ago when you were kids. It meant “I’ll never leave your side.”

You were reminded of the memories you two shared throughout the years. The time you tripped and ate dirt when you were 5 and Renjun laughed so hard he threw up. The time you came out and were a crying mess, but Renjun smiled and patted you on the back, then showed you a really cool rock he’d found.

“Hey, you coming?”

He never did leave your side, did he?
