Beneath the Snow: A Spread To Reveal What is Waiting to Emerge

In the part of the Pacific Northwest where I live, it’s pretty much the dead of winter. My backyard is lying beneath about a foot and a half of snow right now, and we’re slated to get a good deal more before spring comes. It’s dark by five o’clock this time of year, and before the solstice it felt like it was already nighttime at three thirty.

Though it sometimes feels like everything around me is just dead, winter is a time for rest and dormancy, for hidden things to wait until spring, when they come out in full force. I designed this spread after a barrage of snowstorms came one after another, to find out what is hidden or dormant in my life.

What power or aspect of your life is currently hidden from you/lies dormant?

Book of Magical Charms (17th cent.)

This work, penned in England by an unknown author, is a distinctive collection of selected passages from works on magic and various occult arts that describe everything from speaking with spirits, to cheating at dice, to curing a toothache. The book also includes a section of Latin prayers, litanies, and other magical charms that seem to stick more closely to mainstream religious practices.

Just got back from a hike collecting some of the late summer-early autumn flowers dotting the meadows! I managed to grab a few more sprigs of Goldenrod, some various species of Aster, both yellow and orange Jewelweed, and, my personal favorite of all, some sprigs of the native poisonous herb White Snakeroot!

I can’t wait to make some pieces with these in a few weeks!
