I read over the Critical Role IP policy bc I was curious and I have about 5 thoughts

-it’s a pretty typical copyright statement, and the rules are fairly similar to most IP rules (in fact, they’re on the generous side).

-You can still make CR fanworks of any and every kind so long as you are not making money from it. Interestingly, CR broadly still allows fans to make money from fan content via passive ad revenue or donations. So, if you’re an artist with a ko-fi or a YouTuber who runs ads, you can still make content and even make money, so long as you do not hide individual works behind a paywall. (YouTubers / video-makers do need to make sure they’re staying within the content time guidelines, which are available on the IP page)

-By that same logic, fic and art commissions should still be fine, so long as the final commission is either kept private by the owner or posted publicly without a paywall. Still, keep an eye out if the CR team says differently.

- when they say they can “use” fanworks of their IP, they mean in things like the ol preshow fanart slideshow. When it comes to making money from fanwork, they should follow this clause of their statement:

A “third party” would refer to any person or group not officially affiliated with CR, including a fanartist.

If they DO exploit fanwork without paying the artists, that’s when you can get angry. I would absolutely encourage scrutiny and criticism if they ever broke that promise.

-the fact that they wrote the entire statement out in accessible language is important and hugely under-appreciated. That puts real weight behind “we sure do love our fans”. The IP statement exists specifically to tell fans how to keep making fanworks without worrying about IP lawsuits. There are so, SO many companies who do not give a shit about this, who leave their IP statements in impenetrable legalese, or even obscure it on purpose to make cash (see here). Read it carefully, and contact the cast if you have questions. Their email is on the IP page.
