missions with unexpected consequences took the most toll when compared to normal missions. undercover? okay. field action? endurable. an uncalled for ambush? they had to take necessary measures. public area, clear out the civilians and deal with the enemy. an air of panic, sure, but they had to deal with it. they were professionals. they knew what to do in case of emergencies.

such is the case, an unanticipated attack in numbani airport, even after the initial attack. they were just there to analyze and report, be a tourist and act natural. sure, they were prepared, but a trap is a trap nonetheless. three omnics, two tank and one stealth type, heavily armed. the good thing with civilians is that when they are alerted, they knew how to hide. survival instinct.

this is unpredicted, fully real in every second of action, hanzo immediately takes his bow and a couple of arrows out of the guitar case he’d been carrying all along, turning back to encounter the tank behind him. clear shot, normal tip, nock the arrow, draw the string, and one tank down. he doesn’t know where jesse is, he can’t afford to look around right now, as the other omnic started firing. find shelter, hide behind one of the pillars until the omnic runs out of his magazine to reload, and he has only a fraction of a second of a chance. electric tip arrow nocked tight, breath heavy as he waits for his window.

thump. deadshot.

before the action started, he was sure he counted three attackers. two tank, he wa sure, as he took them down. the third? stealth, of course it’s a stealth type. where is jesse.. maybe he’s aiding the civilians to escape—- gunshot sounds. two in particular, one familiar. a wave of dread washes over him, no time for feelings, have to find the third omnic. where is jesse, he has to be fine, he can handle himself—-

oh no.

the funny thing about camouflage is when it gets interrupted by any external force, the whole illusion disappears, and the entire point of being undercover is lost. the downside of this situation is the fact that it is jesse’s blood that makes the omnic visible to the naked eye. by the sounds, he arrives to the logical conclusion that the omnic and jesse has a visible-invisible showdown, and being the cowboy he is, jesse won. to a point. he guesses as the omnic was going down, it managed to shoot at jesse’s lower abdomen, somehow piercing through the metallic armor. the entire scene appears before his eyes for a second, before he runs to him, to hold him, to help him.

     “   deep breaths, deep breaths.  ”

he immediately puts his hand over the wound to press down, not even looking at the man’s face. jesse can’t bleed out in front of him, he is going to be fine, they needed support as soon as possible. he needs to stay calm, things are going to be alright, they went through worse situations. looking for solutions, something to hold the pressure against the wound, some sort of bandage is required. they were undercover, jesse doesn’t have his usual poncho on, so he takes his sweater to wrap around his body. this will be fine. they will survive this. jesse mccree will not take his final breath in a goddamn airport.

     over the comms, “    winston, this is hanzo. we need immediate support.   ”

meanwhile, as he’s bleeding to death, jesse smiles. a painful one, gruesome with blood, but it’s jesse’s smile. and at that moment hanzo knew they were going to be fine. jesse’s a stubborn man, of course he’s going to keep on living just to prove death itself wrong. with this stubborn attitude, jesse mumbles, “  maybe you’d stop worryin’ ‘bout me an’ look at yourself first. ” even while wounded, bleeding and in pain, he still puts hanzo before him. selfless, to the point he doesn’t even care about himself or his safety, that was something they had in common. maybe that was why hanzo felt a strong connection to the bleeding cowboy. they were self-destructive, only to the point that would only hurt themselves and not others. they were willing, to fight, to die, for a cause. maybe this was why jesse was stubborn. maybe hanzo was stubborn in the same manner. thought for later, when they made it out alive. 

with a genle huff hanzo replies, “   i am fine. jesse.  ” slowly but surely he helps jesse get up while still holding the wound, carrying him over his shoulder. “   we need to get you to angela as soon as possible.  ” a hand goes to his earpod.  “  winston, is transportation ready ?   ”   an affirmation, and even with a limp, they manage to walk outside.   “    then, let’s go home.   ” an unexpected kiss to hanzo’s cheek. just as unexpected as the attack.
