I'm excited to announce that I have signed a book deal with Del Rey at Penguin Random House in the US and Michael Joseph in the UK for my debut novel, Alchemised, a standalone dark fantasy set in a war-torn world of necromancy and alchemy, in which a healer with amnesia is taken as a prisoner of war and must fight to protect her lost memories and the secrets hidden among them. It will grapple with themes of trauma and survival, legacy, and the way that love can drive one to extreme darkness, and it is, as you may be able to tell, a reimagined version of Manacled.

I know I’ve been rather quiet about my publishing journey, and a lot of that has been because I didn’t want to spark any concerns or worry that I might be abruptly taking away a story that is such a deep part of myself and that I know has meant so much to so many people. This process has unfolded very slowly and quietly because I have tried to be mindful as I could be in every step of the way. 

As most of you know, I have been a reader in fandom long before I ever began to write. Fanfiction is incredibly special to me, and I have tried to do my best not to undermine its legal protection or allow my works to do so either. During the last several years, there has been a growing issue with illegal sales of Manacled, putting both me and the incredible community that shares fanfiction freely in legal jeopardy. 

After consulting with the OTW as well as other lawyers, it has grown clear that as a transformative writer I have limited options in protecting my stories from this kind of exploitation, but I wasn’t sure what to do; I didn’t want to just take the story down, in part because I worried that might only exacerbate the issue, but I didn’t know what other options I had. Then I suddenly had this idea of alchemy, which was peculiarly appropriate; an academic world filled with unique transmutational abilities, and a necromantic war against people who had discovered the secrets of immortality, and I could see a path to reimagining the story while still holding on to as much of the original spirit of Manacled as possible. 

I began redrafting the concept privately around Christmas 2022, and then as if the universe had aligned, just as I was finishing, Caitlin Mahony and Rivka Bergman of WME reached out to me and were delightfully enthusiastic about concepts and ideas for my new alchemical world and the ways I had reimagined the story. 

I'm thrilled to be working with Emily Archbold, my visionary editor at Del Rey, along with Rebecca Hilsdon at Michael Joseph in the UK, to polish this novel for publication in Fall 2025. I feel uniquely privileged that both my publishing teams are familiar with Manacled and understand how special it is to so many people, and how important it is that this reimagining captures the same spirit while also having its own wings. 

Manacled is not going anywhere at present. It will remain online throughout 2024, at which point it will, if you’ll pardon the pun, alchemise for 2025 and be removed from AO3.

Conflict of Interest

[Pairing: Draco Malfoy x Hermione Granger | Rating: E | WIP/14k words so far]

Summary: It is a truth universally acknowledged, that your former law school rival, must be opposing counsel on the biggest case of your career. Or, overworked & underpaid nonprofit lawyer Hermione Granger v. trust fund nepo baby Draco Malfoy. Antics ensue. Dramione, legal drama.

Chapter 4: persona non grata (unwelcome person)

Hermione spent the entire weekend working on her Answer to Riddle’s Motion to Dismiss. She hadn’t worked this hard, especially not over the weekend, since law school. She had even called out of Flourish and Blotts on Saturday, something she did rarely and only when very sick. She had almost been tempted to use her alumni ID to talk her way into Hogwarts’ law library, just for a change in scenery. She’d spent three years amongst those shelves, pouring everything she had into her work. The dark wood tables, the wrought iron windows, the brass sconces, and the smell… especially the smell of those old, dusty books. It all came together to create her ideal work environment.

She’d always loved it there, despite how many of her long, frustrating nights studying and writing it saw. But ultimately, she stayed in her small apartment. She hadn’t wanted to waste time on the subway ride uptown.

She’d had a working outline before Riddle’s anticipated 12(b)(6) motion was even filed, anticipating likely arguments and countering them as well as raising her own as to why SLAG’s complaint stated a valid claim.

It had been almost two weeks since Riddle’s motion had been filed, and normally she would have filed her own days ago, but found herself utilizing all fourteen that the federal rules allotted between then and the deadline for her response. It was too close for comfort, and she knew that. And yet, she kept editing. And researching. And moving arguments around. No work product was ever perfect, but she was striving to get as close as possible. Caselaw was floating around in her head. Her brain was itching with frustration. Irritation clawed at the back of her neck. Her stomach hurt from the weekend’s steady diet of fried, greasy takeout and buckets of caffeine.

At some point yesterday she’d given up on the pretense of coffee, cracking open a can of her emergency stash of Pepper-Up—her law school energy drink of choice.

She’d be lying to herself if she didn’t feel like she had a lot to prove. If this was not something more than her wanting to do good at her job.

She was working on her first dispositive motion of the lawsuit, and Malfoy’s was good.

So at her kitchen island she sat, marinating in energy drinks and setting alarms on her phone to remind herself to get up and feed Crooks.

If the backlight of her laptop screen had started to make her eyes twitch… that was her business.

Love me a fic that starts with the unresolved sexual tension already thicker than a bowl of oatmeal. I want my ship pining, yearning, and most definitely fantasizing.

I want their minds to wander to how hot the other person is, mid-sentence. I want them barely functioning because of all the hormones swimming through their brains. I want normally smart people who are downright dumb when faced with the smallest bit of barely revealed skin on the other person's body.

By the time they actually realize they're both in this state of tortured sexual desire, I want them to be at their wit's end and ready to flee the country in order to find the slightest scrap of control because there is absolutely zero control left when theyre in the same room together. They need to be scratching at the walls of their souls, they're so desperate for each other.

And when they do finally realize the fact that they're in this on-fire boat together? I want them to have incredibly hot, wildly cathartic (and not necessarily at-all realistic) sex that leaves them both exhausted, happy, and fully satisfied.

Unresolved sexual tension that gets completely fucking resolved, my beloved.
