YOUR GUIDE TO: when to replace your AMPs.
like anything else you own, you replace them when you feel it’s time. there’s no set time frame or expiration date. you tore out the seat of your jeans? toss them. that spatula you’ve used forever finally broke? time to get a new one. here’s some guidelines for replacing your AMPs:
CLOTH PADS:
when you notice wear and tear on your cloth pads, it’s time to toss. maybe the seams are coming apart or you’ve got some holes going on. perhaps it’s just not absorbing as well as it once was. doing things like not wringing your pads, air drying them, and avoiding fabric softeners and bleach will extend the life of your pads! other reasons to toss: mold, mildew, strange smells.
+ got a pad you just don’t want anymore? donate it!
+ did you know that you can compost cloth pads that have run their course? cut off the snaps and toss them into your compost bin!
MENSTRUAL CUPS:
many menstrual cup companies have to instruct you to toss your cup once a year in order to get clearance to sell. this is because cups degrade after a certain period of time. other cups are thinner and degrade faster than others. how long is that? that’s for you to judge. if you start noticing wear and tear, holes, scratches, mold, or your cup is falling apart, it’s time to buy a new one. the good news? some cups can last up to 10 years and don’t need to be replaced that often. use your own judgement!
+ got a cup that didn’t fit you right? try a BST (buy, sell, trade) group on facebook.
ETC:
i read that when your sea sponge tampon begins to tear, it’s time to replace. as for crochet/cloth tampons, the same replacement guidelines apply as those that apply to cloth pads: when you start seeing wear and tear, or you’re getting holes, go ahead and toss!

How awesome is the new cloth pad I ordered?! Its coming in the mail soon! Yaayyyy reusable menstrual products ^___^
Below is a link to the shop I ordered it from. The pads take a while to be made, but look how pretty it is! I think it’s worth it.

First Time Wearing Cloth Pads
So after becoming friends with @blackerellaa a few months ago, I finally ordered a few cloth pads to try out and OMG!! I’ll probably write proper reviews after I wash and reuse them a few times but
FIRST IMPRESSIONS
1) THEY’RE WAY SOFTER THAN DISPOSABLE PADS!! It’s like my first time using Lush soaps, I never realized that my old soap wasn’t cleaning me much until I was really clean. I’ve used disposable pads my whole life, expensive ones and cheap ones, and never realized how rough they are? Like yes they’re softer than toilet paper but these are like the softest cloths EVER.
2) THEY CONTOUR TO YOUR BODY. I’m kinda… chubby (lol) so I wear bigger pads and regardless of shape or even if they’re infinity foam ones, they’re always very stiff and move around in your sleep or sit down and stand up but the cloth ones come in many more shapes and sizes and bc they’re cloth they bend more around your body
3) THEY’RE VERY ABSORBENT. Aside from what goes in the top layer (that looks like less than what spreads on the top of the disposable ones) i never felt any gushing or had any leaks (bc it also didn’t shift around)
Now I wish I had more than 3 rn but I’m gonna wash and reuse them as much as possible this period bc I literally don’t want to put the disposables back on lol.

Have you ever used PP cloth pads? I'm trying to build up my cache for when my LO arrives!
Yes Treehuggers makes an awesome post partum!!! Hers are the only ones I’ve tried but they are so nice. I’d buy another good stash of them if I was pregnant :)

Can you rec me some good cloth pads to start out with? I'm 14 and I have a fairly heavy flow on day one and two then it goes to moderate. Thanks!
I really love tree hugger pads, fig leaves pads, and novel red. Tree huggers has some great post partum pads that I use as over nights for my heavy days and they are so comfy. I personally love minky tops and other soft cottons. Fig leaves are good because even though they are super thin, they have never leaked on me once. Try one of different cloth pad designers. Thats the funnest part!

What do you do with cloth pads when you're at school and have to change????
Girls usually have a wet bag that they keep their dirty pads in the wet pocked and clean pads in the dry pocket. I talk about that in THIS blog post.
Here is also a very thorough video by Precious Stars. It was the very first cloth pad video I ever saw lol but it addresses your question completely.
Good luck!

i want to make the switch to cloth pads but here is my situation, lol. i use the pill so i rarely get a period but i do use disposable pantie liners everyday. so i dont need bulk at all down there. do you think it would be ok to try to make some my own out of old t shirts?
Yes I think that's a great idea :) I have a nice stash of pantyliners. I use them quite a bit during the month. Upcycled pads is what you would call them :)
