“I was studying international business trade in London and interning with a coffee shop at the time. My casting agent saw the side of my face, as she walked past at a vintage market. She later told me that she didn’t even have her glasses on when she spotted me."

"Growing up it always felt like I was stood on the outside looking in at something that I wasn't sure that I could be a part of. I want to give off a sense of kindness, empathy, fun, and fearlessness. If something hasn't been done before, or I'm the first person to do it, I don't care — I've got to create space and opportunities for myself and others."

"It was leaving everything I was comfortable with behind to pursue a career I had no hope of succeeding at and learning how to be comfortable in a situation where I had nothing. It was hard at the beginning because I didn’t feel supported and I completely doubted my abilities. The best lesson of 2019 is that patience and persistence are key, which I evidently practised throughout the year." Akon Changkou, thelovemagazine.co.uk

"Actually, [Fashion month] was my first time traveling. I moved to Australia when I was a kid, but leaving Australia to come to New York was my first long flight. And then going to London, going to Milan, going to Paris, and then going to Greece was something new to me." Ajok Madel, https://www.crfashionbook.com/

“I’m from Lincoln, Nebraska. It’s very quiet, the complete opposite of the hustle and bustle of New York. I was raised by a single mother who taught me that my self worth doesn’t come from anyone but me.”

“In the Dominican Republic, women who are considered beautiful look very different to me and models I saw in magazines looked very different to me. So honestly, it didn’t even cross my mind.”

“My first ever memory of fashion was the iconic Jean Paul Gaultier S/S 13 show. The entire concept was mind blowing, it was a tribute to Grace Jones. And it was so amazing to see so many models of color walk on that show being almost duplicates of a legend.”

“Max Tucci first saw me in the train station on 42th Street while I was waiting for my sister to meet me. He approached me and asked if I was a model and I said no. He then called Beth Boldt who worked for State Management. I got her contact information and sent her some digits the next day. I ended up moving from New York to Mississippi a couple of weeks after that. As the year went on, I kept in contact with both Beth and Max. I was going through a lot in 2017 so both Max and Beth helped me out until I moved back to New York. Three weeks after Beth sent me to State Management New York. There I met Jhendi and Tuskania who signed me.”

“Acting is really my first love. In the future, I plan on pursuing it and doing some television or movies if I can. My dream role would be playing a sexy action hero or spy. Something where [the character] has a shining moment and can help the hero—or she is the hero! I’m waiting for Wonder Woman to come out, because I’m excited about all the female roles that are out there now.”

“I was not really scouted [originally]. My friend Tom Newton sent some pictures of me to Elmer Olsen in Toronto because Daria was one of his favourite models and Elmer discovered her. With no reply from Tom after he sent the photos, Elmer called every Margaret Maurer he could find until he found out where I worked. Very extra …”
