There's a silence and then he can grin down the phone - goes all warm and soft

Expects it again the next night

Gray:

It goes to voicemail

He calls a few hours later, actually waking you up from sleep

He asks what was wrong, listens to you explain that you just wanted to say goodnight

Follows it up by saying goodnight

Laxus:

It's very clear he would've ignored the call if it was from literally anyone else

i'm rewatching fairy tail and i can't help but be touched by juvia and gajeel's actions post phantom lord arc

it's very obvious that both have never found places where they really belonged. juvia wanted to stop being "the rain woman" but even phantom lord could never separate juvia lockser the person from the rain woman image, and gajeel felt the need to act like a jerk to be accepted even if that was far from his actual personality. that's probably why they ended up being kind of friends. juvia even lets us know at the beginning of the battle of fairy tail arc that she couldn't just leave him behind

in reality, juvia is a cheery, upbeat person, and gajeel is a huge goofball desperate to fit in. we can even see this at the beginning of the edolas arc, when he begins to be frustrated that he's the only 1st generation dragon slayer without a talking cat, cause he felt left out of the loop formed by the only 2 ppl who understood his trauma

but they knew that even with makarov's approval, that didn't mean that the guild would forgive them, esp gajeel. so they tried to prove themselves worthy, bc that's what how phantom lord worked

juvia intentionally follows team natsu and wears the fairy tail symbol to prove that she's serious, later she helps during the tower of heaven arc and even collaborates with lucy, who she sees as a love rival at that point. in the battle of fairy tail, after freed tries to use her previous association with phantom lord against her, she sacrifices herself to prove where her loyalties are

gajeel keeps a low profile knowing how the rest see him, and also participates in group activities that didn't exist in phantom (live singing), proving that he can adapt to this new, more laid back, environment. he lets himself be beat up by jet and droy knowing that they and levy are the most justified in hating him. he even lets himself be attacked by laxus without complain, but when laxus directs his anger at levy he immediately tanks a hit to protect her. later he sincerely praises levy when she's working on runes, showing that he's not just a meathead and can appreciate expertize different from his own. when levy goes to the cathedral he chastizes her for knowingly appearing in front of an angry laxus. after fairy law is cast his first thought is to check on her, then prioritizes her protection over fighting laxus. at the end of the fight he even uses his body as a lightning rod to tank a larger attack meant for natsu. and he does all this while never accepting any thanks

more so, i would argue that gajeel self appointed himself as levy's partner in the s class mage exam bc he knew that she would choose jet or droy and neither were strong enough to give her a fighting chance

it's true that gajeel never said that he's doing all of this to prove himself, but it's obvious that, just like juvia, he's trying to prove that he is worthy of belonging and forgiveness

when it comes to gajevy many ppl see just the beginning and end, and are surprised when they get so close, when actually he made a real effort to make it up to her, which made levy realize that he is a better person than she thought

idk, this and jellal's redemption arc just shows that mashima is just the best at making villains into heroes
