Did you know it took over 30 years for Mobile yo resume official 4th of July celebrations after the Civil War? Mobile was one of the last major cities in the country to do so. Seems it took another war, the Spanish-American War of 1898, to galvanize the patriotic spirit of “Lost Cause” leaders here at home.

In 1869 Greville Chester published a book describing his travels through North and South America. He found Mobile still suffering from the Civil War but was struck by three things in particular:
