Dimple Has Changed
Something I just want to make note of. A lot of people have already made the analysis that Dimple, in the previous episode (Episode 8), did not exploit Mob’s emotional state which made him go into a sort of rampage mode, and many have used previous examples from, say, Episode 4 where Dimple reacted in near shock and almost sympathy when Mob showed him unwavering trust. Well, I’m here to provide more examples from this week’s episode, Episode 9.
As I said before, people have already said that Dimple tries to talk Mob out of his emotional state. But I want to talk about the emotional aspect about that choice, and how Dimple’s REACTIONARY responses are a window to his real feelings and his genuine care for Mob.
First, we have Dimple immediately talking him down. Desperately. Here, as it has already been discussed, Dimple COULD HAVE used this as a moment to encourage Mob to go on a rampage. But Dimple, in this total raw and immediate moment, reacts in total horror and fear for Mob’s well-being.
Mob is clearly murderous right now. And that’s what Dimple wanted, right? For him to go ape-shit? Mob can destroy basically everything in this state, and this is a perfect opportunity for Dimple to take advantage of.
Yet this is his real reaction.
This could just be immediate fear and could be brushed off as no further concern, but I’m one for multi-faceted emotions, and here I see a mixture of fear and a deep, deep concern–a realization–that this is absolutely not who Mob should be.
So he hustles, he panics, and he tries any which way he can to calm Mob down, by telling him that his family is alive, and that the bodies are dummies. And you know this because he admits it to Reigen.
Going back to the point that he recognizes that Mob’s murderous rage is unhealthy, not who Mob is at all, here is further evidence as we move on in the episode and Mob interacts with the Claw members:
I don’t have a gif, but Dimple’s practically shaking at this moment. He is disturbed. He is not encouraging what Mob is doing. And it seems like his discomfort is only growing, both due to what he fears is a lie and Mob’s own attitude:
Dimple is not happy. He does not enjoy this state of Shigeo. And maybe there is this underlying state of guilt Dimple feels, wondering if he really is lying to Mob. And how much that might hurt him even more.
When Mob and Dimple finally reach Reigen and the gang, Reigen requests that Mob relay everything.
Fuck, this one shot kills me. Mob’s trauma could not be etched more clearly onto his face. And Dimple looks at it and sees that. He realizes that he can’t let Mob reexperience what he had seen. Dimple steps in.
Gosh, this could not be more obvious how much Dimple has changed. But one final moment is when Reigen tells Dimple that he shouldn’t have lied to Mob, because if he’s wrong, Mob will hate him forever.
AND THIS IS HIS REACTION!! GUILT. FEAR. ANGUISH. Fuck, this hurts me so bad. And it’s really something interesting that Reigen backs Dimple up, for reasons I’d like to play with. Is he trying to share the blame and allot some of the damage? Or can Reigen just not tell Shigeo the “truth?” Doesn’t want to traumatize him? Ah, different questions for a different essay. The point is:
Dimple has changed. And he cares about Mob. So fucking much. And I hope that the love for Dimple becomes more mainstream because this guy has come far, and really, really cares about Mob. He’s been with Mob too much to not form an attachment to him. He CARES. And I love that change in his character so much.
