JOURNAL - DAY NINE (01/03/17)
I took some more video footage using a macro lens instead to create more of the shapes and block colours I liked in my photos from part 1. I edited the words and put them over the top of the video.

JOURNAL - DAY SIX (26/02/17)
I read back through my notes from my tutorial with Jo on Thursday. She asked me what it was that inspired me about April Greiman and her work and it was her attitude that caught my attention. Thinking more about Jo’s suggestion to go back to this to bring more meaning to my project made me think about experimenting with photoshop, still using my workshop but expanding it further.
I used my images I took for part one and I layered a word over the top created in my experiments with light painting from part one. I was really pleased with the result and will definitely be pursuing this idea further.
My workshop is tomorrow night so I have asked people to bring along some words or phrases associated with instinct and having a spontaneous thought or reaction. These are the feelings I got from Greiman’s Drive-by shooting series I looked at. I will also be providing some words and phrases for people to create too.

JOURNAL - DAY FIVE (25/02/17)
Today I attended a combined workshop run by Nadine and Hettie. We got taught how to create Chemigrams by Nadine and Cyanotypes by Hettie. We started off by being given a worksheet by Nadine and she explained the process of how she did it and also how the chemicals react to create the colours. If you want the background of the chemigram to be black then you put it in the developer and if you want it to be white then you put it in the fixer.

JOURNAL - DAY FOUR (24/02/17)
Today based on my feedback from the tutorial I began to research phrases associated with instinct. I found some very meaningful ones and also some that were less serious. These are some of my favourites that could be potentially used in my workshop. I found them on this webpage: http://www.goodreads.com/quotes/tag/instinct
QUOTES:
“You've got the killer instincts of a houseplant. - Josephine Angelini
“In art as in love, instinct is enough. ” - Anatole France
“instinct leads me to another flow” - Queen Latifah
“I said, but I have to go, there are so many places calling my name.” - Nikki Rowe
“Instinct seeks for ways to survive.” - Toba Beta
“Instinct recognizes no justice.” - Toba Beta
“I don't care what anyone says, the stars give you hope on a dark and gloomy night.” - Nikki Rowe
“Illusion is seed of instinct.” - Lailah Gifty Akita
“What saves us from succumbing to utter meaninglessness is not reason but instinct.” - Marty Rubin
“Insanity is intuition.” - Lailah Gifty Akita
“We are optimists by instinct, pessimists by thought.” - Marty Rubin

JOURNAL - DAY THREE (22/02/17)
There was a screening of Rebecca’s film ‘The Landlady’ in the morning and then it was followed by a Q&A/discussion afterwards which was really interesting. She told us more information behind the film and then asked us for our opinions and any suggestions.

JOURNAL - DAY TWO (21/02/17)
Today I began to plane my workshop. It will have a small amount of people who I have already spoken to, 4 people including me. This way it will be easier to control what people are doing as it will be in a smallish space in order to keep the room very dark for the photos. During part 1 I tested and created photos in my flat and in worked really well as we have shutters so can block out any light at all from the windows and there is quite a bit of space to move around to create the letters. I would prefer to do this than find a new location where it may not work as well. It will also be taking place in the evening as I need it to be dark to produce the photos.
As other people will be getting on with their projects I have decided not to as them to take their own imagery and just show mine as inspiration. I will create a small leaflet/poster explaining the process incase they don’t know how to do it or would like to recreate it themselves at home.
I will be providing the mini torches for the workshop and will be using my camera. All I need is for them to turn up and to help create letters using light photography. I will do a test run this week to see how long the workshop should roughly last. Then my actual workshop will take place on Monday 27th February in the evening. I haven’t decided a specific time yet.

JOURNAL  - DAY ONE (20/02/17)
Today we started part two of Design Domain.
We were given a presentation by Artist; Rebecca Davies. She is a graduate of GSA and studied Illustration. She went on to study at RCA and focused on film making and sound recording as she wanted to explore something new.
It was really interesting to see the route she went down considering she started off with Illustration. When I think of Illustration I mainly just think of drawing when in reality there are lots of aspects of Illustration that can be explored.
For her Degree Show piece she created a film about her Grandfather. Unfortunately he died while she was making the film so she decided to focus her film on death but also tried to keep it humour in it as her Grandfather had a good sense of humour about these things.
She then went on to work in the area of Elephant and Castle, where she grew up. She was talking about how there was always a threat of it being torn down and new buildings would appear. She explained that everywhere in London is a potential area for new property or development.
She would illustrate and interview people in the area about this inevitable occurrence of there being a new development to the area. She then turned this into a newspaper; ‘The Elephant’ and asked the local shopping centre if she could have a space to display and distribute it which then became The Elephant Project Space. This was a space for people to come and create work.

JOURNAL - DAY EIGHTEEN (24/11/16)
I put together all my thoughts and ideas today to get ready for the hand in tomorrow. I added in photos to my portfolio/sketchbook and I’ve put together my presentation, reflection and proposal.
For the presentation I put images of Greiman’s ‘Drive-by Shooting’ series as those were the main images that inspired me from her work. I then put a slide of my photos I took in the dark, another of my type response to this and then a slide of the light painting that I did. For my final slide I put up two of the light painting images that you can see me in to demonstrate that I would like to continue this in the form of a workshop with others to achieve better type forms.
In my proposal I have spoken about my experiments with light throughout my project in all stages. I even looked at light with Susan Derges but in a different way so I would say my main focus is light. I want to create a workshop where I teach others how to do light painting and then we all create letter forms together using multiple colours and also recreate imagery of lights at night. Prior to the workshop I will ask people to try and take their own images of lights in the night in the style of Greiman. If they can’t I will provide the images that I have taken for inspiration. I will need to plan out where I will hold the workshop, how long it will be for and how many people can attend.
In my reflection I have spoken about focusing on the light but also if I were to do block one again that I would look into other areas of her work more and experiment with them. I wanted to look into the digital landscapes as that intrigued me and also look more into software and seeing if there were any programs similar to the ones she used.
Although part one has finished I think I will carry on using this format for a journal, it has really helped me collect all my ideas and think back if I get stuck for any. I will also obviously be taking on Greiman’s can do attitude into my future projects. I’ve never been that inspired by someone’s attitude to design, it was so interesting reading about her work and her thoughts on them. She has really inspired me to become more like her with my work.

JOURNAL - DAY SEVENTEEN (23/11/16)
Today is the final day for experimentation!!
I feel a bit behind as I didn’t get as much done last week as I had hoped as I was spending time with my family because of my Grandad’s passing. I have tried to catch up this weekend and the past couple of days and feel like I know where I want my project to progress in terms of ideas. I just need to decide what I want to voice in my workshop that I plan to do. I do want to do a workshop as I want to reflect the can do, just do attitude of Greiman in her work.
I went and got some little ring torch lights from TIGER as they have different colours on and thought it would be easier to create letters with them. I am excited to try this out.
I am a bit confused on how to change the shutter speed on my camera (Nikon D3200) but I have looked it up and need to have a longer shutter speed in order to create the photo I want. I need to adjust the settings to ‘S’ then I can change the shutter speed.
I started to try and take some photos with my camera on the setting according to the website but it wasn’t working, I had the lights off but the background wasn’t going dark. I asked Hettie to help me set up my camera and show me how to do it because I don’t really know how to set my camera up to do things like this and I find it best to learn if someone is showing me. After experimenting with different settings we found that 10″ and 32 F Stop worked best.
I set my camera up on the mantlepiece in the front room so I had a lot of space to work with. I also placed a mirror behind the camera so I could see the screen and see the images so I could tell if what I was doing was working or needed to be changed. I had a 10 second timer on so I was able to get my lights and get into position each time.
I had blue, green, red, purple and white lights to work with. I didn’t have purple in my images I had taken but it comes out more blue on the camera so it was fine.
I had to quickly learn that I wasn’t really able to do more than three colours in the space of time I had. If I were to do this as a workshop as planned then it would work a lot better as multiple people could be doing it at the same time, using different colours and creating different letters.

JOURNAL - DAY SIXTEEN (22/11/16)
Today I looked more into my type work and completed all of the letters of the alphabet in that style of the the ‘artistic scroll pen’ based on the feedback I was given. I am pleased with the results as they do remind me of the lights in the pictures that I took. I like that they aren’t as transparent though as it allows the viewer to understand the letterforms more.
I used a variety of the light colours from my images. I tried to mostly use red, orange, yellow and white though as these were the colours that I experienced the most throughout my images. I also decided to do three strokes of ‘light’ on each letter as I thought it looked more like the lights in the images I had taken.
I attempted to turn this these into a GIF but it didn’t really give off the effect that I wanted. I like how fast the pace is in between the letters as it reminded me of when I was taking the images of the lights and how fast I went by them and how it caused the image to blur. I’m not totally sure if other people will understand this thought process though.

JOURNAL - DAY FIFTEEN (21/11/16)
I had my tutorial today and discussed my ideas and responses that I had done last week.
I got good feedback from my photography images inspired by Greiman’s drive-by shooting work. They all prefered the ones taken at night as they were more interesting. Some liked the more complex images with patterns in them but then some liked the more simple images with small amounts of light.
I mentioned that I had wanted to look at digital landscapes but didn’t get to in the end so asked them if I should try doing it but they all suggested that I shouldn’t stray to far from my ideas and to try and focus on the lights and the type work.
I also showed them my work I created on illustrator to try and relate my work back to type. It reminded me of what Greiman said about text being an image on it’s own so I was trying to relate it back to that. I created a few variations using the different brush options on illustrator.
From the feedback in my tutorial I got that they liked the type that I had done using the scroll brush pen best. One person said the colours and textures reminded them of the 70′s. I will continue to look at this type and finish creating each letter of the alphabet.
