stories about hereditary rulers aren't always about romanticizing a luxurious lifestyle or pastoral longing for a fantastical past

sometimes it's about the cycles of generational violence. how parents project themselves onto their children and model them into mini versions of themselves with no regard for the actual people

sometimes it's about the way fame can ruin a person's sense of self. the trauma of being simultaneously idolized and scrutinized. how growing up being told you are special and so you can never accept anything other than perfection leaves lasting emotional scars. it's about the siblings of special children, who have to face that they will never be the favorite, that they will always be pushed aside in favor of the more important one, no matter how hard they try

or it's about making the choice to stay at a miserable job because you know the work has to get done, and you don't want to force it onto someone else when you know you can do it. it's about making difficult decisions as a leader, knowing anything that goes wrong will be your fault, even if it isn't

it's about being the person who has to pick up the pieces and comfort the rest of the family when a loved one dies. it's about the impossibility of processing grief when the world continues to turn around you, when you have to show up day in and day out even when you feel broken from the loss. it's about forcing yourself to look brave and strong when you feel nothing of the sort, because everyone else is hurting too, and they need that from you

it's about loving someone and knowing you have a unique ability to hurt them. that they adore you so much they will let you go beyond their boundaries without saying anything. having to be careful not to break the heart that was placed your hands

it's taking all of these themes and turning them up to a ridiculous degree. the cycle of violence is an actual war your family has fought for generations. you're not just a prodigy or a child star, your name has been known by millions since your very birth. if you quit your job you hate it will start a civil war. not only do you have to comfort your grieving family, but your entire grieving nation. your lover doesn't just adore you, they literally think you have the right to command them in anything. by way of exaggeration, we can make a point about how miserable and trapped these situations make us feel

idk i think people just boil it all down to power fantasy when there's just so much you can do with these stories beyond that
