If you would like, could you please explain what's bad about using "the raza?" Someone I know said "viva la raza" or something and I didn't think it was right to do so, but I also didn't know enough to say what was wrong with it
@dumbassrights if you or anyone wants to give input.
Part of it is trying to enforce ethnic nationalism in the US, popularized in the 60’s after a boom of Chicano literature and race theory. (This is mean but I blame Gloria Anzaldua forever for this shit)
But the issue is that it was heavily inspired from José Vasconcelos essay ‘La Raza Cósmica x’. La Raza Cósmica was a concept created to racially homogenize Mexico and (eventually) all Latin America with the ideology that there will be no race to worry about because everyone will be mestize— but there’s a catch. Every mestize should aspire to be westernized: light complexions, with Eurocentric education and Christian. To marry beneath that is to regress ‘la Raza’. And I’m SURE if you’re latine you’ve heard those phrases: ‘tenemos que avanzar/mejorar la Raza’. Part of that mentality comes directly from the concepts of that essay.
It purposefully excludes black and indigenous people. Black/Indigenous people don’t fit in the utopia that is la Raza Cósmica, but Europeans do, because they’re the most ‘advanced race’.
You might ask ‘but that’s not how it’s used in the US! It’s to make one proud of their latine heritage!’ And that’s the issue. You need to get rid of that mentality because to ignore how that phrase comes from such antiblack and anti-indigenous garbage is disgusting. This is how Latines in the US get shocked when they realize that black Latines exist or that indigenous people still fucking exist in Latin America. Using that phrase ‘que viva la Raza’ is just promoting the mentality that you only view legitimate Latines as being brown and racially ambiguous but still somehow ‘indigenous’ without even knowing where your ancestors comes from or EVEN if your non-white ancestry comes from indigenous people lol.

Third Time Is The Charm?
Hello, My Name is Milady, I am a Black Lesbian living in Brazil and I really need help.
I’ve done this before but got almost no donations so I am going t try again, maybe now i will have more luck.
Money is tight, even when I have a full-time job I cannot pay rent or any of my bills because the pay is miserable, i have been looking for a new better job, but here, in the south it is hard to get one who pays well if you are not white/thin/straight.
This month has been way rougher than the others and i was sure i wouldn’t need to do this again but here we are, begging so I do not end up in a very deep debt hole.
All i have right now is this:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And since I used my credit card to pay last moth bills I owe around $200 in my credit card bill, $150 in my unpaid internet bill and $225 of rent.
When my salary comes i will be able to pay for internet+water+energy but not for my rent or credit card bill who keeps growing since i have no money, so if anyone can donate i would be forever grateful, and if you can’t, please, please, reblog this.
Thank You Very Much

Are there any Planned Parenthood health centers near me that offer hormone replacement therapy (HRT)?
Tumblr media
A few people asked us:
Hello! I was wondering if you have an updated list of your locations that offer HRT? Thank you!
Does planned parenthood offer hormone replacement therapy in the state of Florida ? If so, which cities?
are there any PPs in oregon that offer hormone replacement therapy?
We got y’all. You can find a list of the Planned Parenthood health centers that offer trans health care services, which may include hormone replacement therapy (aka HRT), at the bottom of this page.
Planned Parenthood’s health care services vary depending on the location, and sometimes the services offered can change. So if you don’t see your local health center on that list, call the health center to double check if it’s offered.
If your local Planned Parenthood health center doesn’t offer HRT, call them to see if they can recommend a trans-friendly doctor in your area who does. You can also tell them that you want this service and what it would mean for you. Our health centers do their best to meet the needs of people in the community and they value your opinion.
(Hormone replacement therapy can also refer to a type of treatment for the symptoms of menopause and perimenopause. If you’re looking for hormone therapy for menopause, contact your local Planned Parenthood health center to see if they offer this service.)

um, american idiot here, is something going on in brazil?
Today was the first round of the presidential elections here in Brazil and a homophobic, racist, sexist, pro-dictatorship rightwing extremist man got around 48% of the votes.
Here in Brazil a candidate can only win if they have more than 50% of the votes, so there’s still going to be another round of voting between him and the second place candidate. He didn’t win yet, but the way I see it, for him to get 48% of the votes is already a great loss for this country.
You can read more about it in these links that I found in english:
The Guardian
The Economist

I’ve seen a few of these “Latino vs. Hispanic” diagrams on tumblr but none of them have been correct, so I decided to make my own.
Hispanic: relating to, characteristic of, or derived from Spain or Spanish-speaking countries that have a historical connection to Spain.
The word “Hispanic” comes from the Latin word Hispania, which was the Roman name for the Iberian Peninsula and its provinces, now known as España (Spain).
People from Spain and Spanish-speaking Latin American countries alike are Hispanic, since Spain colonized the Latin American countries that now speak Spanish.
Latino (Latina/Latine): relating to, characteristic of, or derived from Latin America. People from Latin America are Latine*.
These are countries that were (1:) colonized by European countries (i.e. Spain, Portugal, France) and where (2:) Latin-based languages (i.e. Spanish, Portuguese, French) were imposed upon colonization.
Many people from Latin America are both Latine and Hispanic, but not everyone from Latin America is also Hispanic.
Check your geography: Spain is in Europe, not Latin America; people from Spain are not Latine**.
BONUS: Spanish: relating to or characteristic of the Spanish language, or a person specifically from Spain.
Not everyone from Latin America that speaks Spanish is “Spanish”, unless they or their family are from Spain.
If you say “that person is Spanish”, you are saying that they are from Spain, not that they speak Spanish. So it is only correct if that person is actually from Spain. Spanish-speaking person =/= Spanish person.
Notes:
Some of these terms are very U.S.-centric. “Hispanic” was first adopted by the U.S. government during the Nixon administration and has been used in the U.S. Census since 1980. The U.S. government also adopted the term “Latino” as a way to identify and segregate mixed white, black, and native “mestizo” or “mulatto” people of Latin America.
Most people in Latin America will refer to other Latine people based on their nationality, so the terms “Hispanic” and “Latino” are less often used in Latin America than in the United States or elsewhere.
Even though these terms have specific definitions and their differences should be understood and respected, this is a question of identity. This means that not everyone from Latin American countries want to identify as Latine for a number a reasons, but namely indigenous people who don’t want to identify with their White European colonizers (for obvious reasons).
In addition to the previous point, there are also places in the Americas/Caribbean that are not technically considered to be Latin America due to the non-Latin languages spoken there (i.e. Belize, Suriname, Guyana, Jamaica, etc.), but that does not mean people from those countries can’t identify as Latine. A lot of their cultures and traditions and histories overlap due to their geographical locations and the similarities in European Colonization that they endured.
Thus, it is important to understand these definitions, but move forward knowing that we - especially people outside of Latin America - do not get to decide these identities for everyone, because there are many factors that go into how people identify themselves, and sometimes they are more important than dictionary definitions of terminology. This also applies to U.S.-born people with Latin American family, but struggle with how to identify themselves: there is no right or wrong way to identify yourself. You are the deciding factor of your own identity.
*Why am I using the word “Latine”?
**Similarly, you can be from Spain and also be Latine if you were born/raised in Latin America, have direct family lineage from Latin America, etc.
