Shipwrecks, Nature and More to Visit in Alpena
Situated in northern Michigan, Alpena is a popular destination for tourists during summer. Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary serves as one of the main attractions in town. The MidMichigan Health, a rural regional medical center employs more of the area’s residents than any other location.  Henry Schoolcraft named the town Alpena, which somewhat translates to “a good partridge country”. But the town is known as the “Sunrise Side” because of its location on the eastern shoreline of Michigan. Alpena was once a commercial fishing area and host to many related activities. Today, the town is famous for its limestone quarry, one of the biggest in the world.
People also come to Alpena to explore its rich history and its natural wonders through some of the points of interest discussed below. If you’re into outdoor adventures and love learning new things, Alpena should be part of your next trip to or through Michigan.
Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary
youtube
This 4000 square mile sanctuary protects the Great Lakes and its history. Their mission is to educate people about the rich history of the Great Lakes and how it helps form the society we know today. They worked hard to ensure that these underwater treasures will still be around for future generations to enjoy. Some 200 or more historic shipwrecks lied deep within Lake Huron’s fresh water and with the help of the community preserve these priceless treasures. The visitor center also shows different exhibits for visitors to take in and enjoy. Staffs at the Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary are equipped with the knowledge to educate visitors and they’re super friendly too. Visitors are always fascinated with the history of the shipwrecks and leave appreciating the Great Lakes that much more.
Alpena Bi-Path
This hidden gem is a great place to go for a romantic stroll or a family picnic. Its view of the river is very picturesque like those of a painting. The Alpena Bi-Path is well maintained and a safe place to ride a bike or just enjoy a leisure walk. It gives you an idea how healthy and happy the lifestyle is in the area. The best time to explore the place is early morning when you can see other bikers around or late in the afternoon.
Stoney Acres Winery
youtube
This winery offers some of the best soda and wines in town. It’s near the Thunder Bay Marine Sanctuary and best to drop by to this place before heading home. Servers will let you taste some of the homegrown brewed and even have several choices of sodas for your kids. They even have chutney samples to go along with their wine.
Island Park & Wildlife Sanctuary
Another great family destination around Alpena is the Island Park & Wildlife Sanctuary. They have different types of plants and trees with markers that educate visitors. The sanctuary also has many spots for family pictures or selfie opportunities. What makes this place great is the accessibility. They have easy trails for wheelchairs and walking paths, making the outdoors available to everyone. They have labels along to way to let you know that you can expect on a particular trail.
Besser Museum
Don’t let the exterior fool you, small as it is, Besser Museum has some great exhibits for your family. Their planetarium offers some interesting shows with a presenter that is well versed in the field. It is not too crowded, and perfect for little kids to explore some of their exhibits. The museum houses a refurbished boat and fossil pit which is great for your kids to dig their treasures. Overall, it’s a nice place to visit whenever in town.
If you plan on making your way through Alpena or anywhere in Michigan while the temperature is low, make sure to bring along your favorite hot beverage in one of our Michigan D Tumblers to help keep your drink (and you) warm.

Why Haven’t You Visited Alma Yet?
Alma is the biggest city in Gratiot County in Michigan. Residents of Alma love their annual Highland Festival. The festival is full of fun with Scottish clans gathering for bagpipes, a lot of dancing, a celebration of friendship, caber tossing and, of course, kilts. But before it happens, there are some spots in Alma that you may want to try to get a real taste of the city’s hospitality, some excellent homegrown Michigan cuisine, and some wonderful outdoor activities.
youtube
Apple Barrel Cider Mill
If you like an alternative in the mainstream mills that’s always packed with people, Apple Barrel Cider Mill serves as a prime example. They make their cider with old school presses just beside a window where you can watch them do it. Locals will tell you to visit the place as it’s one of best destinations near Alma. The place has a unique homey décor with hand-hewn barn beams and different antiques hanging on the walls. They also serve great donuts paired with a free coffee. The Apple Barrel Cider Mill also has goodies like homemade pies, fudge, and cheese. It is one of the great places to buy Michigan-made products and you can’t beat their cider slush during the summer.
Fred Meijer Heartland Trail
youtube
This town gem brings out beautiful scenery for every season. The Heartland extends from Greenville to Edmore going through Alma. It’s a destination itself, where the bike trails are easy to navigate with within a thriving wildlife sanctuary. Don’t get too surprised if you meet deer, turkeys, and other migratory birds along the trail. Park benches and shady parts of the trail offers a great resting place for bikers and hikers alike. And if you do attempt to bike this lengthy trail sometime soon, make sure to keep warm with a Michigan bike crank hoody.
Great Wall
Once you get those hearts pumping, it might be time to refuel that lost energy. Great Wall is an excellent Chinese restaurant which offers great food choices for your tired body. There are several restaurants in town, but this one stands out from the rest. The restaurant is a local staple if you need comfort food along the way. They offer meals that everyone in the family will love, even those picky eaters. They only serve the fresh ingredients with great flavors on all their dishes. It’s a family-owned restaurant, very clean and the staff is friendly and trustworthy, so feel free to ask for their favorite plates. Great Wall is known for their fast service and consistently good food. If you can’t come to their restaurant, you can also grab one of their take-out meals and it never disappoints.
Alma Brewing Co
Whether you are on a casual date night or out with longtime friends, Alma Brewing Co can satisfy your cravings. They have good sliders, tasty burgers, and great salads. If you love beer, they also have an excellent selection of brews that are great any time of day. Their friendly staff can suggest what beer goes best with their menu. More to Grosse Pointe Park than Meets the Eye
Located in Michigan, Grosse Pointe Park has a population of 11,555. It’s bordering towns are Detroit and Lake Saint Clair. Most people refer Grosse Pointe Park as GPP or The Park. But locals call the area from Alter Road to Nottingham the “Cabbage Patch” due to the area’s duplex style houses.
The unofficial colors of Grosse Pointe Park are Pink and Green which signifies the classy lifestyle of GPP residents. A film called “Grosse Pointe Blank” was set in town. But in reality, the town only gets 11 seconds of fame in the film’s footage. Grosse Pointe has 5 cities – namely Grosse Pointe Park, Grosse Pointe Farms, Grosse Pointe City, Grosse Pointe Shores, and Grosse Pointe Woods. Each has its own Police and Fire Departments.
The town has some of the safest road conditions in the region. Likewise, students of Grosse Pointe public schools do not use school buses. They either walk or their parents drop them off. The famous Edsel Ford and his descendants still live in GPP. During the Great Depression, the town was very popular because of its closeness to the Canadian border.
Although GPP is a small town, it is packed with attractions worthy of a visit while on vacation in Michigan. Here are some them:
Edsel and Eleanor Ford House
youtube
Visit the well-known house of Edsel and Eleanor Ford. Spend the day walking around the beautiful grounds for a beautifully serene experience. There are tours that offer educated guides for visitors. These guides are well knowledgeable and entertain questions from visitors. They have an onsite restaurant that serves delicious food, meaning you won’t have to leave the grounds for a great meal. Aside from their lovely home, the home offers a beautiful garden that’s worth taking the time to explore. The location also shines during the Christmas season as they put up a great display that adorns the garden.
Saint Paul Catholic Church
youtube
Located at 157 Lake Shore Rd deep in the suburb of Grosse Pointe Farms, Saint Paul Catholic Church is a landmark you should not miss. Marvel at its architectural design and intricate interior. If you have any interest in architecture, historical locations or just like exploring Michigan, this is a stop you need to make.
Riverfront-Lakewood East Park
Riverfront-Lakewood East Park is a beloved park in Grosse Pointe Park because it’s peaceful and a perfect place to train dogs. The park is a nice place to enjoy an afternoon walk or jog to shake those calories off. You can also find a nice picnic spot for your family and let the kids experience the outdoors. There are no official recreational activities in the park, but fishing is really popular in there so be sure to bring your pole if you have one. Locals and tourists position themselves at the seawall in high hopes of getting the biggest catch of the day.
Dossin Great Lakes Museum
youtube
Before leaving town, make time to visit the Dossin Great Lakes Museum. The museum displays some of the most important historical moments of the Great Lakes. They also have exhibits that tackle the rich history of the shipping industry. For a small museum, you’ll be surprised to find out it has so much to offer. There are picnic spots and fishing ports nearby, which are an added bonus for you anglers out there.
And if you do end up fishing around Grosse Pointe Park, make sure to don your Michigan Fishing Hoodie to keep warm as the temps start to come come down.

What’s Worth Checking Out in Escanaba
Escanaba is a port city in Michigan’s Delta County and can be found on the banana belt of the Escanaba River in the Upper Peninsula. It is the third largest city in the region with 12,616 residents. Escanaba Township can also be found just north of the port city sharing the same name. Both are named after the Escanaba River, a name which was derived from the Ojibwa language.
Delta County Historical Museum
youtube
Make time to visit the Delta County Historical Museum to learn some interesting facts about the history of Escanaba. Back in the day, a WDBC radio station used the building but moved to a new location downtown during the 1950s. The city then acquired the building and let Delta County Historical Society leased it in 1956. The city government allowed the society to use the building as a museum for a total of one dollar a year.
Fayette Historic Townsite
youtube
Tourists often come to the Fayette Historic Townsite not because of its modern amenities but for its rich history. don’t miss your chance to experience the life of the pioneers back in the days. The town was once a thriving industrial community that is well known for its production of iron ore from 1867 to 1891.  However, when the industry fell because of the Great Depression, residents left the town.  It later became a ghost town. The city preserved the area and even introduced real life recreations of the 19th century. Actors wear era-inspired costumes and portray the daily life of the former residents. Visitors can get a real glimpse of Americana before modernization.
Sand Point Lighthouse
youtube
Located at the end of Ludington Street and Escanaba Municipal Marina is where Sand Point Lighthouse and Historical Complex stands. The lighthouse was fully restored and equipped with a Fresnel fourth class lens placed at the focal point of the tower. It has an interesting story, though.  According to urban legend, Mary Terry, one of the first women that served as a lighthouse keeper on the Great Lakes would occasionally appear on the grounds. Several years after her death, she was still reported to show up at the lighthouse to check up on things.
Upper Hand Brewery
To end a great day at Escanaba, the Upper Hand Brewery offers a unique blend of beers to tired tourists. They have one of the best-crafted beers in the North, which celebrated the flavors of nature. They have an onsite brewery where visitors can taste their hand-crafted beers fresh from the barrels. Relax in their cozy tavern while waiting for the sun to set .
William Bonifas Fine Arts Center
The name of the center was derived from “Big Bill” Bonifas who came to the Upper Peninsula in the 1880s from Luxemburg. He focused on the timber industry where he made his fortune. Meanwhile, his wife Catherine had another purpose in life – making donations in the cultural and educational matters for the city. Tourists flock to the center because of its unique exhibitions and art displays. Due of its contributions, the center was given the prestigious “Governor’s Arts Award” in 1990 and in 2007.
When you’re out walking around Escanaba, stay comfortable in one a Great Lakes Girl pullover.

Everything You Forgot You Wanted to Know About Lake Michigan
The waters of Lake Michigan hide fascinating wonders that most of us can only imagine. Here are some questions about Lake Michigan we all ask ourselves but often don’t look up. Get a cup of your favorite beverage and join us as we tackle a number of  interesting questions about Lake Michigan.
Does Lake Michigan ever completely freeze over?
No, it has not, but it does occasionally come close to a complete freeze. According to the National Weather Service and Environment Canada, the closest Lake Michigan come to frozen solid is about 90 to 95 percent. The record which dates back more than a century ago reported that during the cold and harsh winters of 1903-04, 1976-77, 1978-79 and 2013-14 Lake Michigan was almost completely frozen over. Other Great Lakes like Superior, Erie, and Huron have had their time under the ice but not Lake Michigan or Lake Ontario.
Jump to about 2 minutes into this video to see our favorite lake in a fairly frozen state:
youtube
How much water is in Lake Michigan?
Lake Michigan is 3rd largest lake of the Great Lakes and the 5th largest lake in on earth. At its deepest, the lake goes 923 feet deep and stretches 307 miles long with 118 miles at its widest point.  It contains as much as 1,180 cubic miles (4,918 km³) of water. How massive is Lake Michigan? Every second, over 320,000 gallons evaporate off the lake and receives at least 400,000 gallons of rain or snow.
youtube
Why is the water in Lake Michigan so blue and pristine?
Strong winds bring particular sediments to the surface giving Lake Michigan its famous clear blue waters. In fact, Lake Michigan attracts thousands of visitors because of how surreal it seems compared to other natural lakes around the country. The lake probably has one of the most beautiful beaches in the country, too, because of how nice our water looks. Nevertheless, Lake Michigan water can be treacherous because of rip currents, proving once again that although our nature can be beautiful that doesn’t mean to not be safe.
Is Lake Michigan saltwater or freshwater?
The Great Lakes – Superior, Huron, Michigan, Ontario, and Erie – make up the the largest freshwater system on the planet. They account for more than one-fifth of the freshwater surface on the planet with more than 6 quadrillion gallons.
How clean is Lake Michigan? Is it safe to swim in it?
Anyone that’s been on the lake can’t doubt its cleanliness. Because of it’s clarity and purity, Lake Michigan is a popular swimming destination for locals and tourists alike.
youtube
How big are the waves on Lake Michigan?
Currently, Lake Michigan has small waves from the usually 1 to 2 feet. However, recent years shows that Saugatuck’s Oval Beach had 4-foot waves. The height of the waves is important to ensure safety on the beach. Lifeguards carefully monitor these waves as one of the swimming conditions for beachgoers. Lake Michigan has the most popular beaches in the country and hundreds of people would go here to take a dip in its refreshing water during the summer season.
Just for fun, though, check out these insane Lake Michigan waves from when Hurricane Sandy was nearby:
youtube
A bit of a reminder for beachgoers: pay attention to flags on the beach. A green flag means it’s a perfect day for a swim. A yellow flag means that it is still okay to swim and urge swimmers to use caution. But stay away from the beach whenever you see a red flag hoisted up.
And the next time you’re heading to Lake Michigan to spend some time around the clear blue water, make sure to show your state and lake pride with some of our cool Fresh Coast gear.

Auburn Hills with the Family – What to See and Do
Auburn Hills is a city in Oakland County in Michigan that’s great to visit for a day trip or as part of a vacation in Michigan. It houses the world headquarters of Chrysler, Oakland University and the former home of Detroit Pistons. Back in 1908, the automobile genius, John Dodge bought a farmhouse in Auburn Hills and made it his retreat house. The city has a peculiar upside down “L” shaped which makes it one of the hardest to navigate through, so tourists may find themselves in and out of Auburn Hills depending on which way they travel. Nevertheless, the city houses a number of precious historic finds and natural wonders.
Oakland University
Tourists often pay homage to Oakland University which shares a border with Auburn Hills and Rochester. The university grounds hide a marvelous gem with scenic beauty. It also has an old yet very attractive clock tower, as well as landscapes with ponds and hammocks. Their food court even has a Chic-Fil-a, which is one of the few locations still left in Michigan and happens to be the first in the state. They have a different event going on throughout the year which makes it a bit more interesting for visitors.
youtube
Walter P. Chrysler Museum
The city is home to the Chrysler’s headquarters. It had its own building that used to be like Disneyland to car lovers. However, the museum is no longer available. Some visitors who visited the location described the museum as a precious place that brings back sweet memories. They had ‘one-off’ projects cars that a certified motorhead would appreciate. It’s worth a quick drive to this iconic place while planning your next stop in Auburn Hills.
Hawk Woods Nature Center
Camping is often seen as an integral part of father and son bonding moments. But for a fun activity, visitors come to the Hawk Woods Nature Center to experience a rustic kind of bonding for the whole family. The center offers a great family activity all year and everyone will find it enjoyable and interesting. People come here to teach their youngsters how to deal with the outdoors and spend some time away from all their gadgets. It is a great way to teach kids an old school way of living and tell camping stories they will hold dear in their hearts. The Hawk Woods Nature Center has well-groomed trails, boardwalks, and heated showers. All these amenities rest in the middle of 80 acres of scenic meadows and forested woodlands.
youtube
Sea Life Aquarium
Tourists come to the Great Lakes Crossing Mall not just to go shopping but to see the largest aquarium in Michigan. Sea Life Aquarium caters to families as their facilities are all child-friendly. It features over 5,000 sea creatures like sharks, octopus, turtles and much more. They have many interesting sea creatures swimming in their tanks that you won’t find in a regular aquarium.  They also have an aqua tunnel and an interacting area for some of the animals. For some, it’s a great diversion for kids to look through (with an older sibling)  while their parents do some serious shopping around the mall. Nevertheless, it’s a great way to spend an afternoon with the family. Sea Life Aquarium also offers educational tours discussing the ocean and the environment.

Enjoy Sunshine, Embrace rain, and Live Life to the Fullest
We often live our lives in a mundane fashion. There are so few that truly look for adventure and actually seek those experiences out.
Why is adventure so important?
It’s the adventure that allows us to take a few moments to look into our soul.
Enjoying the Sun…. Embracing the Rain
Our souls are often neglected through the business of life. We tend to run so fast that we are unable to take a few minutes to reflect and consider if the path that we are on is actually the path that we are supposed to be on. Or is the path we are on something imposed on us by our circumstances or family?
My wife and I planned to take a kayaking adventure through Paddling Michigan. (Great company and an awesome guide named Andy) We were scheduled to leave about 3pm and take about 4 – 6 hours kayaking from Miner’s beach out to Lover’s leap and then back to Miner’s beach. That plan didn’t go exactly the way we thought.

We were delayed for a little while at the start of the journey, the weather was unpredictable and could have moved either way very quickly. Once the storm declared its intentions we were able to launch and start on the adventure.
My oh my, what an incredible start. The wind was coming out of the south which allowed for very calm water along the shoreline of Lake Superior. The sun was peeking through the different clouds giving us the splendor of Pictured Rocks.
(For those who don’t know, Pictured Rocks is a State Forest area in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. The mineral found with the sandstone runs with the water down the side of the sandstone painting them with magnificent color. When the sun reflects off the sandstone set atop the crystal clear, intense tropical blue water, it is a sight unmatched anywhere in the US)
With the calm water we were able to sneak into the coves that were dripping the water leaking through the sandstone. The experience was breathtaking and something that is a once in a lifetime experience. We felt so fortunate to have some perfect weather and our hopes were high for an incredible sunset on the trip back, but that wasn’t to be.
youtube
We were Enjoying the Sunshine!
We had reached the halfway point of our trip, Lover’s Leap. Lover’s Leap is likely the most notable arch along Pictured Rocks. There are many legends that give the point character and charm. But the beauty and experience of paddling under this magnificent arch is an experience that and only be felt in person. It was at this point that the Coast Guard issued a weather warning and that all water craft needed to get off the water. You can always tell the guides that are worth their weight in salt by the way they act when plans change. Andy was one of those exceptional guides. We were able to land safely at Mosquito Beach and have our lunch while we waited further instructions.
Those instruction — Hike back to Miner’s beach. That’s right surprise, you now have a 4 mile, 2 hour hike back to your pick up spot. Everything changed in a few minutes. What we had planned and what we were about to do were clearly two different things. We hadn’t planned for a hike. We hadn’t prepared for a hike. There were 2 couples and our guide Andy. We now had to figure out how to carry our personal baggage and hike back 4 miles in either water shoes or bare feet.
You see, it is moments like these that define us. It is the chance to look into our souls to see what we are truly made of. To find out if there is a thread of steel that is woven into our soul or if we are find out there is a hollow vacant space. Upon looking inward you are going to find one of two things. The Reinforced steel support structure or absolute emptiness. What are you going to find?
When you are required to start looking inward and find that you haven’t built the steel reinforcements, there is nothing but absolute panic. A panic that causes you to freeze and not act. A panic that causes you to lash out at others. A panic that produces a complaining attitude. A realization that you should have done things different but by then it is just too late. You are in a situation that is completely out of your control and you are forced to adapt and make the best of the situation.
This is the time to Embrace the Rain!
I can say from the deepest part of my heart, I am blessed beyond words to have found my best friends and soul mate to embrace the rain with me.
Boy did we embrace the rain, both literally and figuratively.
With both couples we had no other options but to hike back. It was probably the most fun I have had in a very long time. Within 10 minutes of starting our hike back the sky began to rain, slow and steady. The type that you know will last a long time and drench everything. We LOVED it. It was a time we will not soon forget. We hiked for almost 2 hours and for 1 hour and 45 minutes of that hike we were drenched. We were virtually alone along one of the most amazing cliffs in Northern Michigan hiking in the pouring rain and absolutely loving it. We wanted this. We embraced this adventure know that we had the stamina and the courage to tackle the hike.
youtube
These are what memories are made of. These are the times that you look back and say we built a foundation that allowed us to “weather” (pun intended) any type of storm that may show up. We have spent the time building our souls so when things like this do happen we are able to rely on the support of our internal structure.
What have you done lately to build your internal structure? Are you creating a foundation that will allow you to weather the storms that come in your life?
Creating a true balance in life is all about being able to —
Enjoy the Sunshine
… while there is time to enjoy the sunshine and
Embracing the Rain
… there will always be rain in our lives.

Our Trip Kayaking Munising, Michigan
My wife and I had the chance to sneak away for a quick 2-day trip to Munising. We wanted to spend a little time checking out some of the different waterfalls but also take the time to kayak with Paddling Michigan and try to see the sunset as we were coming back. What we didn’t expect was the awesome adventure that awaited us.
Most people like to work through a plan or schedule of events and would rather not live for the adventure. But then where is the fun in that?
The Plan
Our plan was to arrive in Munising later in the evening, spend the next day according to our schedule and then head home the following day. What we didn’t know was that while we had planned out our events, the weather made different plans for us.
The morning after our arrival started out pleasant enough. There was a little sun and some clouds were passing through. It looked like an excellent day for kayaking but that wasn’t set to launch till about 3pm. So we were able to sneak a couple of quick little trips. In Munising there are many to choose from. The Twin Falls are one of those semi-secret locations. While they are not as well know as some of the other waterfalls around Munising they are some of the coolest. There is a short hike to get back to the 50’+ drops. When the water is flowing strong they are pretty incredible to see. The paths are well marked but as you walk along these cliff type edges you truly get the feeling that you’re walking back to a secret cove. Once you get into the cove you can totally immerse yourself in the waterfall which you would swear is really some far off tropical getaway. It’s amazing these are literally in our back yard and yet the location feels so secluded.
Our next stop was sand point. One of the most fascinating things you will find is the maroon sand. This maroon sand is called Jacobson Sand. It is only found along the shores of Lake Superior. The tale of Jacobson Sand is in itself nothing short of a mystery. Much like the Black beaches of some exotic far off place, the maroon sand holds its color and creates a feeling of wonder in finding something that you will not find anywhere else. Don’t miss it.
Finally Onto Kayaking
It is now finally time for our Kayaking trip. We knew immediately that this was the adventure that we had been waiting for. There was a massive storm system that was moving in and it had the chance to run either north or just a little south of use. The great thing about the storm is that it was being pushed by a southern wind. South winds make the water along the shoreline of Lake Superior calm and almost tropical. We were delayed until we knew it was safe to venture out on the water. The sun started to peek through in a couple of spots with made the combination of the calm water and the stained rocks breathtaking. These are some of the things that photos and words just cannot describe. The minerals from inside the sandstone leak out with the water and literally paint the sides of Pictured Rocks. This national park is one of best kept secrets of all the US parks. The chance to kayak up close to these 2000 ft cliffs is something you won’t soon forget.
youtube
As we got close to Lover’s Leap (the most well known arch along the Pictured Rocks) we received a call from the weather service, issuing a warning to get off the water. We were 4 miles away from our launch point on Miner’s Beach. Our only choice was to land on Mosquito Beach and hike back the 4 miles to Miner’s Beach. We had a few minutes to explore Mosquito River and had to sit in awe of the storm front that was moving across Lake Superior.
youtube
The hike back was part of the adventure we hadn’t planned on but in my humble opinion it is what makes memories. We all have choices that we face every day in our lives. We often plan our paths and activities but how often do those plans or activities turn out exactly as we had thought they would.  It is at these points that we make a decision. The decision that will truly touch your soul and allow you see what lies below our normal everyday way of life.
When it Rains, It Pours
About 10 minutes into our hike back to Miner’s beach it started to pour. A steady rain that you know is here for a while. They type that slowly drenches everything around you. It is at this point in our adventure that I can truly say “I absolutely love living in Northern Michigan.” The ability to get out where there is no cell phone coverage. Where there are no other people and it is just your group of friends and nature. A chance to look into your soul and discover what it means to be alive. Our 2 hour hike was one of the best hikes my wife and I have ever taken. It was a special experience that allowed us to say that we alone shared.
Living in Northern Michigan is a chosen lifestyle that we don’t regret. The experiences we can share along with the rest of our family are things that bring us closer and allow us to laugh and really know who we are instead of the fake profile accounts that so often permeate our lives.
All I can say is as you live your life – Enjoy the sunshine and Embrace the rain. You can’t avoid both and only you can decide what your memories will be.
For more outdoor activities around Michigan, make sure to bring something warm like our Beer Koozie Hoodie so you can stay warm while keeping your beverage cold.

Our Overnight Waterfall Trip
We took off for an overnight trip to see a few of the larger more spectacular waterfalls of the Upper Peninsula in Michigan. One of the first stops we made on our way up was an old fashion drive-up dinner (which I honestly didn’t were still around). When we pulled up it was a little confusing, much like attempting to remember how to use an old rotary pay phone. The awkwardness of do I get out and go up to the counter or wait for this caffeine buzzed teenager to scurry over to take our order made the visit seem a little surreal at first. Ultimately, it was a cool experience. The food came out with a window tray and we were able to steal a couple of moments that had almost been forgotten with time.
A Sunset to Behold
Our journey took us to the edge of Lake Superior just outside of Marquette. There are tons of scenic turn offs but since the sun was just about to set we looked for an abandoned beach with hopes of catching some magnificent sunset colors. Sunset glowed in an incredible fashion as it reflected off Lake Superior. Several lonely pieces of driftwood allowed us to get some great set photos.
Michigan Waterfalls
We got up the next morning with high hopes and lots of energy. First stop, Canyon Falls. We were not disappointed. The short 10 minute walk to the deafening echoes of the falls from the canyon walls is well worth the trip. We spent the next ½ hour exploring the rest of the canyon. There were some hair raising drops and great views that allowed us to feel the awe of just how incredible the Upper Peninsula of Michigan really is. All in all we hiked about 2 miles and it was relatively leisurely.
youtube
We had planned to stop at Miner Falls and Munising Falls but decided to head straight to Sable Falls. The water was high and while the view was great the adventure was worth the stair climb. We made it down to one of the first side paths along the river and built a few stone towers. We then continued to adventure to the beach front. This is a Rock Collectors dream. The beach was alive with magnificent colors and all sorts of different type of rocks. We even found some petrified wood, which was  a unique find.
We made our way to Tahquamenon Falls. This engineering marvel shows how powerful a force water is. The water is a orangy brown from the amount of mineral deposit found throughout the Upper Michigan. The lower falls is where you will want to take a few moments to allow you to just take in all the sites. The stopping points allow for some incredible nature shots and if you have the time to sneak across to the island you will have an up close and personal experience with the mighty Tahquamenon Falls.

Rip Currents: Lake Michigan’s Deadly Grasps
What are rip currents?
A rip current or rip is a kind of water current which occurs in shore or near beaches with breaking waves. It is described as a strong and narrow current of water which is hard to see due to an absence of breaking waves.
It moves directly away from the shore and can be recognized only by a ripple on the surface of the water. Experts define it as a ‘river’ flowing out to the sea which has the strongest current near the surface. Some people often confusef rip currents with rip tides, which is a different type of current. A rip tide is a rapid movement of tidal water across the entryway of estuaries, inlets, and harbors.
Mostly seen in the Gulf, East, and West Coasts as well as in shores of the Great Lakes, rip currents are so powerful they can reach top speeds of eight feet per second. They can even move faster than the strongest Olympic swimmers.
One Dangerous Grasp
Rip currents are dangerous to people trapped in their grasp. People often who get caught in its deadly embrace instinctively attempt to swim straight back to shore. However, that’s a wasted effort and puts people at risk of drowning from exhaustion while fighting against the water’s movement. Panic and exhaustion are the leading cause of death for people trapped in rip currents.
Every year lifeguards rescue hundreds of thousands of beach goers from rip currents in the US alone. According to the US Lifesaving Association (USLA), an estimated 100 people die at the hands of rip currents worldwide, with almost half of all those being recorded in the US.
Based on USLA data, almost half of all lifeguard rescues are related to rip currents. Meanwhile, sharks only kill about 6 people annually around the world.
Rip currents in Lake Michigan
Behind Lake Michigan, serene beauty and picturesque beaches hide a deadly secret. Local authorities in Michigan claim that rip currents are the most dangerous occurrence when swimming the lake’s waters. Today, officials urge beach goers to enter the water with caution.
How Rip Currents Work
When rip currents occur, they form a narrow, strong tide that flows away from the shores. Nonetheless, there are different types of rip currents that form in a variety ways. They occur in places where there are breaks in a sandbar where water is funneled out to the sea. However, the strongest rip currents form in tight spots like jetties, piers, and groins.
Factors That Form Rip Currents
Factors that help form rip currents include the tide, weather, how the waves break from the shore, and the shape of the beach. Most rip currents form in certain beaches while others almost never see these dangerous currents.
The unpredictability of rip currents can carry unwary swimmers out to sea without warning. These strong currents usually move one to two feet per second with stronger rip currents reaching 8 feet per second. At that rate, even the fastest swimmer’s (Michael Phelps) stroke is about 6.6 feet/second and can’t contend with this natural phenomena.
How to Recognize Rip Currents
youtube
Local authorities keep reminding swimmers to enter the water cautiously. Avoidance is the key to prevent any accidents in the beach. It is important for swimmers to test the water before heading to deeper areas. Looking up weather updates and talking to lifeguards about the water conditions can further help prevent accidents.
Scientists have been observing and studying rip currents for over a century. Today, modern technology helps track rip current movement and speed. Still, even with the advancement of technology, no one can predict when rip currents will appear.
Rip currents often hide in deep sandbars that may look like calm spaces in the water. Turbulent breaking waves often appear along the sides of this calmer water. According to USLA look for the following signs for rip currents in the lake:
Water with different color from the rest of the sea
An area of uneven water
A short and interval break in the incoming waves
Debris, seaweed or a line of foam moving out to sea
Lifesaving Tips
youtube
If you ever find yourself in an unfortunate event and you get caught in a rip current remember not to fight with the waves. Instead swim parallel to the shore and, once out of the water’s pull, swim back to land at an angle.  Do not panic and if you can’t escape the current try to float or tread water until help can get to you.
If you’re heading to the beach, make sure to stay alert. And look great doing so while carrying your beach gear with this Great Lakes Girl sling bag.

Fishing Season: The Best Time to Catch Fish in Lake Michigan
From their borders, the states of Wisconsin, Indiana, Illinois and Michigan all touch Lake Michigan. Major ports in Chicago, Benton Harbor, Gary, and Green Bay surround its shores. This makes traveling and fishing in the lakes accessible to almost everyone.
The question now lies, when is the best time to go fishing?
Depending on what you want to catch, each month and season offers different varieties of fish in Lake Michigan. Usually, fishing season in Lake Michigan opens in mid-April, May, and June. During this time, it is best to catch Coho Salmon with a very good chance reeling in Rainbow Trout and Brown Trout.
The months of April and May are the peak season to catch Jumbo Yellow Perch. While from the month June until October Coho salmon and Chinook salmon dominate the waters. The best time to catch the biggest trout starts from September to October, which is spawning season. Trout caught in these months can weigh over 30 lbs.
In Lake Michigan, salmon is the most prized catch of the day.
youtube
Since its introduction into the Great Lakes in the 1960s, salmon fishing has been part of many fishing tournaments in Michigan. Most anglers hunt several species of salmon in Lake Michigan, including Atlantic salmon, Coho salmon, Chinook salmon (better known as King salmon).
Anyone can catch salmon in Lake Michigan with its year round fishing season.  However, fishing at a particular time during the year can increase your chances of reeling in the “Big One.” Before sailing, keep in mind that the Michigan Department of Natural Resources Regulations has imposed several fishing regulations. Some of these include size, catch limits, seasons, and fees.
Atlantic Salmon
From the beginning of spring until summer anglers chase Atlantic salmon in Lake Michigan. Their spawning period starts in midsummer and anglers can reel in their biggest catch in Great Lakes tributaries. Once a native to Lake Ontario, Atlantic salmon once disappeared in the Great Lakes at the start of the 20th century. The MDNR began introducing the fish into the Great Lakes and its connected water ways in the 1970s. Today, the endeavor has shown to be wildly successful and has since provided anglers with some of the best catches in the country.
Coho Salmon
youtube
Fishing season for Coho salmon peaks in late summer and early fall. But anyone can catch Coho salmon any time of the year in Lake Michigan. According to MDNR studies, migrating fish like the Coho salmon may be caught in certain rivers surrounding Lake Michigan, including St. Joseph River. Meanwhile, fishers can catch Coho salmon in winter months by casting in Munising Bay in Lake Superior.
Coho salmon are classified as a Pacific salmon species. It was one of the very first salmon introduced to the Great Lakes in the early 1960s. The fish then began spawning in 1967, which has made a huge impact on Michigan fishing.
King Salmon
youtube
Many anglers choose to reel in King salmon while fishing the Great Lakes. In Lake Michigan, fishing season for King salmon begins in late spring and lasts through the summer. The spawning season for this fish begins in August and ends in September. Areas of Ludington, Manistee, and Muskegon produce hundreds of these fish each year. However, as the month of August ends, this breed starts to move upstream and many anglers wait to catch them in the faster streams and rivers. Grand River is one of the more popular fishing spots for King salmon.
As the King Salmon begins it migration from the river mouth, anglers can reel in some massive catches. King salmon, as the name implies, can reach as big as 20 lb to 30 lb. The biggest catch recorded in Michigan is about 46 lbs. and was caught in Grand River.
Different Salmon Species
Because of the vastness of Lake Michigan, other species of salmon like pink salmon, chum salmon, and kokanee salmon can live harmoniously with other species of fish. And like other fish species of the lake, they have their own peak season. The best time to catch these kinds starts in spring, late summer and early fall.  Spawning time also varies even with the same species and Michigan is a large state to cover. In the northern part of the state, spawning starts in May. While in the southern part of the state it may begin sometime in October.
If you’re going to head to Lake Michigan for some fishing of your own, you might want to grab a comfortable Michigan hat to help protect you from the elements.
Information about Lake Michigan
youtube
Lake Michigan is one of the five Great Lakes located in North America. Of all the five lakes, Lake Michigan is the only lake that sits entirely within the US borders. The other four lakes, Lake Huron, Lake Erie, Lake Superior and Lake Ontario are shared by Canada and the US. The word “Michigan” came from the Ojibwa word ‘mishigami’ which means “great water.”
Because of its surface area and volume, Lake Michigan is the second-largest of the Great Lakes with the only one bigger being Lake Superior.

Towns Bordering Lake Superior and What They Have to Offer
In North America, ancient civilizations founded their community around the Great Lakes. These bodies of water help cultivate the culture and tradition of the nation we come to know today. As the largest of the Great Lakes, the shores of Lake Superior are home to important cities in both Canada and the United States. This beautiful body of water is also one of the many reasons why states like Wisconsin, Minnesota and Michigan are awesome places to visit.
Duluth
youtube
With an estimated population of 86,110, Duluth acts as a major port city in Minnesota and the main town of Saint Louis County. Located in the north and at the westernmost part of the Great Lakes, Duluth is the second largest city located on the shores of Lake Superior. Sea vessels can access the town from the Atlantic Ocean via the Saint Lawrence Seaway and the Great Lakes Waterway.
Duluth established a metropolitan area within the lake with nearby towns of Superior and Wisconsin, referred to as the Twin Ports. It formed the largest port in the Great Lakes for transporting grains, iron ore, and coal for decades since its foundation.
Some of the best family tourist attractions in Duluth include:
   North Shore Scenic Drive
   Canal Park
   Aerial Lift Bridge
   Historic Glensheen Congdon Estate

Marquette is a city in Marquette County in Michigan with an estimated 21,355 residents according to the 2010 census. The most populous city of the Upper Peninsula also acts as a key port on Lake Superior. The Northern Michigan University calls Marquette their home and iron ore is its main shipping industry.  With the quality of living in the town, CBS MoneyWatch named Marquette among the best places in the US to retire.
Initially, the town was called New Worcester but later changed to Marquette on August 21, 1850. This is to honor the French Jesuit, Jacques Marquette who first discovered the place.
Some of the best family tourist attractions in Marquette include:
   Presque Isle Park
   Sugarloaf Mountain
   Lakenenland Sculpture Park
   Marquette Mountain
   Marquette Maritime Museum
   Upper Peninsula Children’s Museum

Fun Activities for the Kids in Battle Creek
If you’re looking to spend some time in Battle Creek with the family, this Michigan town has a lot to offer the little ones in your entourage. With them in tow, any of the following places will be a blast.
Dr. John Harvey Kellogg Discovery Center
youtube
The Dr. John Harvey Kellogg Discovery center is not just your ordinary museum. Kids will surely love this discovery center. Their guides are well informed not just about the facts but how to keep your family entertained during the tour. They will encourage you to try and test some of the health equipment in the vicinity.  Try to visit during the summer or spring so you can also explore some of the village outside. Your kids will learn a lot in some of Kellogg’s inventions. Much of modern day health equipment was patterned from many of Kellogg’s contraptions.
  Binder Park Zoo
youtube
The zoo is well maintained and a beautiful place with a natural setting for the animals. Despite its small size, the held lots of animals. They also have an African Safari Area and kids will love this place. They have a train ride inside the vicinity and other activities for your kids. You can also enjoy the small scenery as the zoo chooses to keep a natural habitat for the animals. They boast of a great giraffe exhibit where you can also feed them. It’s a great time to spend the morning just walking to explore the zoo.
  Full Blast
youtube
Beat the summer heat in Full Blast. It’s a good indoor-outdoor water park and they also have slides perfect for you kids. Aside from bigger slides which are popular for teenagers they also have smaller slides for toddlers. The place also has a trampoline to drain your kid’s adrenaline rush. Keep your kids busy in Full Blast and you don’t need to bring that much food, they offer hot dogs and nachos at a fair price. The lifeguards are all attentive keeping everyone safe as the crowds may go rowdy sometimes.
Try a Hot Air Balloon Ride at Altitude Endeavors, Inc.
Not every city offers hot air balloon ride, so if you come and visit Battle Creek, this activity is a must. I would not advise you to go if you have toddlers, but for teenagers so seek adventure, this one tops the list. Experience Battle Creek in a different perspective (I mean literal), once afloat, you will be amazed in the scenic view. It’s a breathtaking view from above, perfect for those social media selfies (hey not everyone can experience this).
  Kingman Museum
youtube
Huge museum can sometimes overwhelm little kids but the Kingman Museum is just perfect for them. Edward M. Brigham established the museum 1934. Since then, the main focus of the museum is about displaying artifacts from Brigham’s expedition and natural history. The large polar bear and musk ox will greet you and always creates fascination in children. It’s the right size for young minds to explore and learn history. The staffs are well informed and very friendly. They even know how to keep those little minds engaged. Kingman Museum also has a Children’s Garden and it’s a great place to visit. It is a very good destination for couples with small children.

Designers will definitely appreciate the 319 acre of land with a beautiful view.  Take a walk in its grounds and you will notice the Arts and Crafts design movement. Even with a minimalist interior, the collections are quite extensive. They feature different a artist almost every season, so you’ll be hard pressed to have the same experience twice.
