Apple's overdramatic miniseries adaptation of Renée Knight's thorny 2015 debut revenge thriller novel stars Cate Blanchett as a successful documentarian haunted by a lurid secret from her past. It's a vicious takedown of the "difficult woman" archetype employing potboiler narrative tricks to unfold its sordid material about a mysterious death stemming from an alleged illicit affair thought to be buried for good. There's some impeccable production design, cinematography, and an elevated cast but it's ultimate reveal of culpability quickly undoes its intial pulpy melodrama.
