“Whosoever holds this hammer,” intoned Thor, “shall wield the power of the storm!”
“And whosoever holds my hammer,” replied Hephaestus, “shall hold power over metal and the forge.”
“But can I golf with them?” the human supplicant asked

After the echoing crash of the crypt door had finally faded, the moth-eaten zombie stumbled out onto its knees. Panting, drawing breath into lungs that no longer needed to work, it began to chuckle.
“I live,” it murmured, before raising its arms up and howling, “I…LIIIIVVVVVVVVEE!” It sank back down with a weak groan. “And god, does my throat itch.”

The bounty hunter bent down. “Don’t worry, little one,” she said to the toddler hiding themself behind their mother’s leg.
The toddler poked their head out. “Are you going to hurt me? My friend said that people in ships hurt other people.”
The bounty hunter chuckled. “I’m not going to hurt you, don’t worry. I just want to say hi.”

“This was your fucking idea.”
“I’m sorry, am I the one who wanted to steal from a government official?”
“No, but you did want a job. I simply decided to find one for us.”
“Well, look where we ended up: tied up and about to be fed to a monster.”

“Hello, Nick. Mind if I came in?”
The Grim Reaper entered the small room, its host still processing its presence. The Reaper looked around, taking it all in.
“I like how you did the walls,” it said finally. “It fits, you know?”

The dark warrior lifted its sword. “What is your bidding, my master?”
The primordial beast stirred. “I DESIRE... A BAGEL.”
“What?” the dark warrior asked.
“TWO BAGELS,” the primordial beast corrected.
The dark warrior blinked behind their helmet. This was...unexpected.

The demon paused, looking away from the angel it was fighting at a sight neither expected to see that day.
“What?” The bystander asked, glancing up from their phone and drink.
“You can...see us?” the angel asked blankly.
“Believe me, that was my response 5 years ago,” the bystander said, taking another sip. “I’m used enough to it now, though, that it’s more-or-less routine.”
The demon and the angel stared at the bystander, weapons lowering, perplexed at this new turn of events.

“Is there a point to this?” the wizard asked.
“Yes,” the warlock replied, jiggling the paper clip into the lock. “Now shut up, I’m trying to concentrate.”
“I’m sorry,” the wizard growled, “I’m just wondering why two magic-users like us are stealing from a government official.”

“The temple?” The lean snow-beast raised a finger and pointed northeast. “It’s that way, if you really want to go there.”
“Which I do,” the traveler replied.
The snow-beast shrugged. “Fine by me, I guess. Just don’t forget to keep your sword arm ready. There are things there that have an appetite for those such as you and I.”

The bounty hunter breathed in the warm air as she stepped off the ship. It was nice, being able to visit a planet without having to deal with anti-hunter organizations for once.

The dragon howled with delight. “You’re giving birth?”
“In a few months,” the young queen said, smiling in spite of herself.
“We would be honored and delighted if you would be at the naming ceremony,” her husband added, trying not to chuckle as the dragon bounded like an excited cat.

The sphinx tailed the group of intrepid explorers from the shadows. It had been so long since anyone had come to her realm. She listened intently, searching for any reason the mortals had come.

“Don’t lose your way,” the cat warned, shooting a sour glance upward, “lest we both get lost.”
“Don’t I know it,” the teenager grumbled. “Can’t you help more?”
The cat repeated the sour glance. “Have you haven’t noticed that, beyond the talking and the sentience, I am a house cat?”

The distant, quiet slip-slap of wet bare feet did more to keep the group of teens on edge more than anything else they had encountered that night.
