Challenge 1: #timewarp

Challenge Criteria:

Produce a work of fanfiction that places characters in a time period other than the one in which they canonically appear, OR a work of fanfiction that highlights a time period which hasn’t been explored thoroughly in canon (or, both!).

Challenge Prompts:

It’s 1986, and Ilvermorny School looks like a John Hughes movie starring Queenie Goldstein as a Molly-Ringwold-esque teenager.  It’s the year 2150, and The Weasley Twins are capitalizing on the untapped wizarding market on the Martian colonies. It’s been two months since the fall of Voldemort, and the Malfoys are trying to piece their lives back together after the war.   It’s 2022, and Albus Potter has stolen a time-turner… oh, wait… that’s already been written (and that’s okay!).

For this Fanfiction Writing Challenge, we invite authors to play with Time, as we prepare to explore Wizarding Through the Ages at MISTI-Con 2019.  Writers can explore an aspect of the canonical timeline which hasn’t been covered in detail.  Authors can create an alternate universe in which characters are living in a decade outside the one in which they canonically exist.  Or, hey, take characters out of their era and place them in an era that doesn’t get much coverage in the books!  Break out that time-turner and give it a spin!  Founders era, Marauders era, Next-Gen era - any time period is game!

MISTI-Con 2019 Fanfiction Collection: NOW OPEN FOR SUBMISSIONS!

Is your quill as mighty as your wand?  MISTI-Con seeks to build a compendium of excellent fanfiction by and for our attendees.

Submissions are being accepted NOW for inclusion in the MISTI-Con 2019 Fanfiction Collection hosted on AO3, a website for fan-created transformative works.  A few weeks before MISTI-Con 2019, the collection will go live for all to peruse.  So that everyone may have the opportunity to read or submit stories, we encourage ALL conference attendees to join the AO3 collection (see below).

Need a little inspiration or motivation to get those creative juices flowing?  Periodically, the Fanfic Coordinator will be posting Writing Challenges to help inspire authors.  Each challenge dares writers to step outside comfort zones and to push boundaries, so that the collection reflects a rich diversity of works.  

We encourage writers to take part in at least one challenge, though we welcome writers to submit ANY of their Harry Potter fanfiction, whether it meets challenge criteria or not.  

The fanfic fun continues at MISTI-Con 2019 with TWO fanfiction meet-ups, including live readings of pre-selected works!  There will be a general fanfiction meet-up for all audiences, and a special Adults-Only meet-up where we’ll indulge in mature content.

I’m happy to read another of those, but would also love to read other couple’s stories of dealing with the law.

 How to Submit:

1.     Apply for an AO3 account if you do not already have one.  Please note that AO3 membership is by invitation only. If you do not have an AO3 account, you can apply for an invitation using this link: http://archiveofourown.org/invite_requests.  It may take 1 to 5 days to get an invitation, depending on request volume, but don’t get discouraged - it’s quite easy.  

2.     Once you have established an AO3 account, or if you have one already, join the collection. Joining the collection enables the participant to eventually submit. Submitting a story does not have to take place at the time of joining the collection. There is also no obligation to submit a story just because you join the collection -- readers are welcome to follow as well.

3.     Once a moderator has approved you, you are eligible to submit a story.  

a.     If the story has not been published yet on AO3, begin by clicking “post to collection” and fill in all the fields.

b.     If the story had already been published prior, go into your story’s “Edit Work” page, then under “Associations” type “MISTI_Con_Fan_Fiction_2017” next to “Post to Collections/Challenges”.

c.     A moderator must approve your story before it is posted to the collection.

d.     Prior to the collection going live, your accepted stories will be listed as “Mystery Work” and can not be accessed by visitors to the collection page, but will remain visible and accessible to you on your AO3 account.

4.     Instructions for tagging AO3 works:

a.     AO3 allows authors to specify content Ratings, Archive Warnings, and Tags. AO3 rating system denotes if works are appropriate for General Audiences, Teen and Up audiences, or Mature audiences, or if the work is Explicit.  Works of all ratings may be submitted to the collection but must be clearly rated. Any stories with a rating of “Not Rated” will not be accepted.  

b.     AO3 Archive Warnings include Graphic Depictions of Violence, Major Character Death, Rape/Non-con, and Underage.  Works that are flagged with archive warnings may be submitted to the collection but said archive warnings must be clearly stated.  Any stories with an archive warning of “Author Chose Not To Use Archive Warnings” will not be accepted.  

c.     When listing additional tags, please include “MISTI-Con”, any specific warnings not covered by the general list of archive warnings, and any material that may be triggering.  If a prompt was used (see below), please include the tag “MISTI-Con Prompt”.

5.     For each fic that you submit, please fill out this form so that we can match your AO3 persona to your MISTI-self. This will also help us track.  You can also access the form here: https://goo.gl/forms/6Ylv7MC0MRx5t1VE3.

  Don’t have anything ready to share? No worries -- you can still get in on the ficcing fun.

●      Starting on February 18th, the FanFic Coordinator will be accepting prompt submissions from anyone and everyone. If you’ve got a short prompt you’d like to challenge fic writers to take on -- an inspirational phrase, a pairing, a moment in wizarding history, etc, see this page to submit!

●      We’ll be accepting prompts and posting them at misticon.tumblr.com from February 18th through April 1st.

●      Authors who use prompts should tag their work in AO3 with “MISTI-Con Prompt” and include the prompt in the notes at the beginning or end of the story. The name of the person who gave the prompt should be indicated if applicable.

 The AO3 collection will go live on May 1st, giving everyone a few weeks to read as much as they choose!

During the convention, we’ll have a Fanfic Meet-Up (time and location TBD) where all of our authors and readers can meet to chat informally about their works. During this time, we will have a few short readings of works pre-selected by the Fanfic Coordinator.

(Please note: We are happy to accept Mature/Explicit works for the AO3 collection, but to keep the Meet-Up safe and friendly to all, we will not consider Mature/Explicit works for live readings).
