Part of this was just me wanting a bit of an extra challenge as an art project to take my mind of things, part of it was digging through my bottomless reference folder for something completely different and getting stuck with an idea about Flint and his horse? And, really, the need for small comforts, I guess.

Anyway. I like the idea of him being secretly fond of that horse, of giving it some ridiculous name that nobody would get but Thomas (although Miranda probably does, and just pretends she doesn’t). And of him taking comfort in the warmth and solid presence of another living creature, of him allowing to let the mask slip and be gentle for a moment. It’s a simple comfort, and one I can see him craving when he has so little comfort left.

I know the moment is objectively sad but ‘Mr Gates’ heart has given out’ has got to be one of the funniest line deliveries in the whole of black sails. The fact he knows no one is going to believe it but you can still feel the absolute audacity seeping out of his voice. The side eye to Dufresne. The cunty stance. It’s so fucking good. Toby Stephens the man that you are.

the direct parallel between thomas enlisting flint's help despite their differences in the flashback and then flint and silver stricking their weird agreement to help each other despite their differences in the present is too delicious oh my god. flint being brutally honest in the flashback and silver being brutally honest in the present. thomas being intrigued by flint and flint being intrigued by silver. the improbability of either plan at succeeding. I love this.
