“ i sure do but i won’t be goin’ nowhere til the truck is fixed. i don’t see th’ harm in it. “ completely oblivious to the look the siblings shared & she tilts her head towards the road, “ if y’ wanna, ya know where i’ll be miss jolly. “ a curtsy in her light blue sundress & she starts to walk away.
Screw it, she thought. Her brother always has all the fun. She turned and jogged back down the driveway.
“On second thought, I would love to. Especially since you put it that way. Guess it wouldn’t do no harm.” Maybe a little to her brother’s ego, but probably not much. Besides, it wasn’t often a new face passed through their rinky dink town, if you could even call it a town. Pennsylvania was home and the most beautiful place in the world to her but Jolly could help the longing feelin she had for some excitement.

it’s real fortunate indeed, & val sends out a quick thank you prayer that she’d landed here of all places. “ he did? they do? “ she can barely keep her excitement in check, “ i ain’t won no shows – “ how could she if she never competed, “ but i do breed horses. “ from race-horses to show. “ mostly i stick ta mustangs cuz that’s what i got but i work with all manner-a horses. “ what was that saying one of her repeat buyers had said? ‘ ain’t a horse if it ain’t a torentino horse’ .
bishop’s arrival distracts her from the conversation, offering up a hand for him to shake as well. “ name’s valentine. m’ truck broke down n’ i’d sure appreciate yer help gettin’ her on her feet so t’ speak. “ she’s almost sad to see jolly retreating back to the house & she hesitates between leading bishop to the truck & following jolly to continue the conversation. “ it was a real pleasure t’ meet ya too, jolly. i thank ya. actually – y’ wanna come see th’ horses, by any chance? “
“I sure would!” Jolly hesitated, seeing the glare her brother threw her way. “But I wouldn’t want to be any bother to ya. Reckon ya got places to be and all.”

“ been on a ranch? “ valentine can’t help her giggle, face lighting up in a dazzling grin, “ i live on one. but where i’m from, we ain’t got a whole lot-a mechanical stuff. t’ be honest, i ain’t even sure how ta fix the car. “ but the offer of help brings a flood of relief, & valentine happily extends her arm for a firm shake. “ alright, jolly – “ what an interesting name, but she likes it, “ m’ name’s valentine. “
taking a glance around the farm, she takes in the sight of horses in the distance. “ y’ got horses? “ now she can’t keep the smile from her face even if she tried, “ m’ actually headed upstate t’ sell a few-a th’ horses i raised. y’ breed ‘em or anythin’ like that? “
Jolly could barely contain her excitement at meeting another horse lover. Sure, there were the girls from the competition that she could be friends with, if they didn’t hate her and think she was a loser.
“Oh boy, do we?! My parents are prize horse breeders. Why my brother just won 2nd in the Penna national horse show! Of all the strange luck, you breaking down near our home. What kind of horses you se...”
“And who might this fancy young thing be?” Bishop had finally made it down the driveway to where they were standing.
“Be a doll and help this poor thing out with her vehicle will ya? She’s on her way to sell some horses.” Jolly said tipping her hat to Valentine and turning toward the house. “It was very nice meeting ya, Valentine”

it’s not a wonder that the old truck had broken down, but valentine had been hoping it would have gotten her further than pennsylvania. the house wasn’t far from the road & with darkness creeping in, she’d rather get some help while there’s still daylight left. the blonde that approaches her startles the cowgirl, green eyes turning to the other woman.
“ pardon m’ showing up so late, miss. my car broke down an’ i was hopin’ you had some tools i could borrow ta fix ‘er up. “ or try to, really. val was no mechanic.
“Ha, do we have tools? You ever been on a ranch darling?” Jolly was trying not to act so stunned by the woman’s beauty. Just be casual and act normal, she kept thinking to herself.
“I could fetch my brother to come have a look for ya. BISHOP!” she hollered in the general direction of the house. “And it ain’t ‘miss,’ the name’s Jolly”
She stuck out her hand for a shake and attempted a shy smile.

As Jolly is walking back to her home, the long day’s worth of chores finally complete, the gleam from the woman’s sunglasses catches her eye. Now who could that be at this hour, she thought. Might as well find out.
“Howdy there stranger. What brings you out to these parts?”
