Hara, the mangaka behind Embrace Your Size, has a new manga running in the magazine Souffle by the name of Okashi no Ie no Madame-san, or "The Madame of the House of Sweets."
"A Human Drama about a shy high school girl who has a weakness for sweets, stumbling upon a run-down candy store one day while looking for shelter from the rain. There's a "Help wanted" sign which piqued her curiosity. But the store's owner is a stern-looking, elegant older lady closer to a witch than an gentle granny. The blooming friendship between a shy teenage girl and a tsundere madame!"

If I had a nickel for every time I heard about a manga about a plus-sized woman who works in a lingerie store by a mangaka who previously drew a yuri series, I'd have two nickels. Which isn't a lot, but it's weird that it happened twice.
(The other series is Lingerie no Megami-sama by Yuni, currently it’s pretty new and little information is available about it in English but it looks good so far.)

Thank you for the reccomendation! I decided to start reading it last night and before I knew it I had already read 4 out of 5 volumes! I really enjoy the characters and their relationships, I'm honestly surprised I haven't heard anything of this manga before! Thank you for bringing it to my attention!
October 22-28 is Ace Week 2023, so I’d like to give a spotlight to some manga I have enjoyed that have also touched on asexuality.
I Want To Be A Wall by Honami Shirono
Tumblr media
A 3 volume Josei manga about the lavender marriage between Gakurouta, a closeted gay man who pines for his childhood friend, and Yuriko, an aromantic, asexual BL fangirl.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
She Loves To Cook, and She Loves To Eat by Sakaomi Yuzaki
Tumblr media
An ongoing yuri Josei manga with a TV adaptation about two women who bond over food. The series recently introduced Yako, an asexual lesbian, and it’s possible that protagonist Nomoto may be on the ace spectrum as well.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Is Love The Answer? by Uta Isaki
Tumblr media
A single volume josei manga about Chika, a young college student who has always considered herself an “alien” because she has no desire for romance or physical intimacy, but finds community with people like herself.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Our Dreams At Dusk: Shimanami Tasogare by Yuhki Kamatani
Tumblr media
A 4 volume Seinen manga about a closeted gay boy who gets to know the patrons of a drop-in center who all turn out to be part of the LGBTQ community. Someone-san might be considered a deuteragonist of the story.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I’d also like to mention two yuri manga I haven’t finished yet- I have only read the first volume of both- but because of what others have said I know they feature asexual characters!
Catch These Hands! (murata)

Doughnuts Under a Crescent Moon (Shio Usui)

If “certain” viewers of I’m In Love With The Villainess (WataOshi) are upset with the characters discussing sexuality I wonder how they will react once the anime introduces the transgender cisgender character.

I’ve been waiting to get my hands on the third volume of She Loves To Cook And She Loves To Eat (TsukuTabe) just so I could read this conversation between Yako and Nomoto. I’ve noticed several recent yuri manga have been discussing asexuality lately, and I’m glad to see more.
Tumblr media
I admire author Sakaomi Yuzaki, not only for putting these topics in TsukuTabe, but for also using their audience to try and bring about some positive change for actual members of minority groups in Japan.

"...when that day comes, will you cry with me?"
I Want To Be A Wall by Honami Shirono is a 3 volume Josei manga about the lavender marriage between Gakurouta, a closeted gay man who pines for his childhood friend, and Yuriko, an aromantic, asexual BL fangirl. The third volume will hopefully be released in English soon.
From the premise I expected it to be a lot zanier or sillier, but if anything it’s one of the most interesting and compelling relationships I’ve read in a manga. It would feel wrong to say I “ship” Yuriko and Gakurouta because the whole point is that they’re not in love, but the bond they have as confidants who support one another is extremely touching to read and more fascinating to me than a lot of romance stories between a man and a woman.
I also enjoy how the manga talks about BL and why readers would be drawn to it. It's also refreshing that Yuriko isn't just some 2D caricature- although she is taken to flights of fancy often she does keep a strict divide between fiction and reality when it comes to gay men (to my relief). In fact a running gag is that Gakurouta is the one who is curious about learning more about BL (to Yuriko’s horror)
It's a strong manga that packs a lot into very few volumes, and I hope more of Honami Shirono's work gets translated. Supposedly Colorless Girl is good and I definitely want to give it a try.
