Beans.
My partner and I have a running joke with a friend. Every time he goes on holiday we increase the quantity of beans in his flat.
The first time we bought ~30 cans of kidney beans and hid them around the house like some Easter egg hunt thing but with beans.
The Second time we bought ~6kg dried white beans and hid those in various places. Nearly every receptacle that could safely hold beans became the home of beans. My personal favourite was emptying an oat milk carton, very carefully washing and drying it, filling it with beans and then just putting it back among several other cartons.
He went on holiday again a couple of weeks ago. Obviously there is an expectation of bean-based shenanigans. And obviously we have to beat our previous efforts.
Our friend has (had) a mosaic on his wall of the famous Marilyn Monroe Pop-Art by Andy Warhol. He made the mosaic himself. Over the last couple of weeks we have spent hours and hours assembling a frame, drawing up a pattern and gridding out a 70 x 70 frame and gluing an untold amount of beans to it. I have spent over 21 hours gluing beans to a frames.
For the last couple of days I ended up going to bed at 5:00 am because I lost track of time whilst experimenting with which types of glue works best with different beans (I now have *opinions* on this, y’all). The day of our friend’s return we spent the morning and afternoon grouting the piece and wiping it down and wiping it down again and wiping it down again because grout is just like that. In the evening we went to install the mosaic, just a few hours before his return. Here’s a comparison between the original and our clearly superior replication, and the new piece installed in its rightful place.

monstrous regiment is imo one of the scarier discworld books like the waves of gothic anger that roll off of it. the terror feels REAL practically the whole book takes place in shitty buildings during a wild storm and jackrum aside every single recruit is absolutely insane in their own way and the whole book is just going you bastards, look at them they're teenagers and theyre eating rats and being shoved out to the front lines with no training and theyre either going to die in a pointless war or theyll survive and die very shortly after from poverty and yes the sock jokes are funny and yes there's lesbians and a vampire with a caffeine addiction and yes the domino effect of finding out exactly how many women are in this story will never get old but. this book takes place in a nightmare! he wrote the gay mulan folk song story in a nightmare!
#its funny because I never considered Pterry to be an angry person#but the number of posts I've seen about the rage in particular books or characters#its really made me re-evaluate#and what I've realised is I have that same rage#so when I saw that on the page with all his added wit and humour#I just saw the humour#so I've always imagined him as a man of pure joy and light#but he was both#discworld#terry pratchett

I was rambling on the issue of museums and human remains and how certain populations are more likely to have their bodies put on display to be gawked at and then went "well I guess the Pompeii casts were of Europeans. there are bones in there right?" and Googled it to make sure, at which point I confirmed that yes there are bones in there, but more interestingly DNA testing revealed that a cast of an adult holding a child everyone assumed was a mother and child were, in fact, a man and a kid entirely unrelated to him. Honestly that's more moving to me. Maybe they were connected in a way other than blood, but maybe a stranger saw a child when the world was ending and thought the one thing he could do was hold them.
#not to be all Buddhist middle ground-y#but I genuinely believe its both#its human nature to have the capacity for compassion and love - and also for callousness and cruelty#the factors that decide which will shine through are complex and varied#the guy shielding an unrelated child is an example of human nature#but so were the salem witch trials

#I think it makes sense for things to be pronounced with whatever accent is being spoken#I'm bilingual#when I'm speaking French I say Paris and Sydney the french way#and when I'm speaking English I say Paris and Sydney the Australian way#I find it difficult to switch accents mid-sentence especially for just one word#whatever the place name is#I do my best approximation of how that language/accent would say it#which is a very long winded way of saying - no I dont find it annoying
