I gave up on drawing his hair as is, so I'm doing this shit instead
Tumblr media
I love Azul and I hate trying to figure out his hair for my re-design. Especially in a turn-around that I need to make so I can properly animate him in my stupid little marshmallow thing;
Tumblr media
someone help, what is happening 😭

The animation I'm making with Octatrio is going to take me forever and I don't wanna be super silent, so for now have a new twst OC 🫴
Tumblr media
She wants your sandwich
As usual she doesnt have a name bc I suck at those... This OC came to me in a dream about my other tswts OC lmao. She is a hyena/cheetah mix and she's from the same area where Ruggie grew up/where his family is, and she was a homeless orphan(how sad). In my dream, my existing twst OC - Markus -, wanted to visit Sunset Savannah and instead of booking a hotel like a normal person, has asked to stay with Ruggie in exchange for feeding him and his family while he's there. The little orphan girl noticed a new person who feeds people for free and followed him (and Ruggie) back to NRC, and they only noticed her when it was a little too late. Her being a pretty much undocumented homeless orphan none of the staff wanted to deal with her and Markus feeling absolutely horrible about returning her to the streets decided to just adopt her instead.
There's not much else to say about her because she's a toddler and other than being smarter and more magically gifted than average (hence, she managed to sneak into NRC), she acts like a toddler. She's a little inspired by Anya from the Spy Family, but she's more quiet/talks less, and obviously cannot read minds. She's adorable and most people love her even if its because they can exploit her cuteness for profit.
That being said, Markus happens to be one of Vil's roommates in my AU, so this probably happened:
Tumblr media
Don't worry, she apologised and Markus bought Vil new even better makeup than everything she ruined. She then said she just wanted to look pretty like him, and he helped her find age-appropriate makeup and taught her how to use it. She later became his favourite overall when he found out she's absolutely terrified of Neige for no good reason and nobody knows *why*.
(As the author I can tell you it's because a commercial with him was playing in the background when one of the traumatic events in her life happened)

Honestly yeah, twst leaves a lot of logic behind in favour of focusing on other things and I don't mind but that's why I made up an AU (NRC uni au) in my head:3
In that AU I can say whatever goes, and I'd say "Coral Sea" is nowhere near deep ocean and it doesn't freeze over in winter (I live near the Baltic sea and as far as I know, it doesn't freeze over even here). It just... makes more sense 🤷‍♂️
I didn't even know there was a map tho, that's really cool!
I'm too busy in my personal life to finish my twst OC drawings OR to finish the lore of twst itself so y'all are just gonna need to listen to my mad-man ramblings that might even have a canon explanation.
So, I'm thinking that.
Is there possibly mermaid racism in twst?
There seems to be a very huge divide between how mermaids in twst look like, with some having more "human" characters in their upper body and some being more "animalistic" over all.
Example: random museum guards vs Floyd or Jade (or even Azul, but he's an octopus so he'd be different either way)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Other than the very drastic contrast in appearance, Floyd and Jade are based on characters that in the original were not even merpeople but talking fish instead.
So, that kinda begs the question, is there two kinds of merpeople? The "original" magical kind, and those who descended from fish the same way beastmen descended from animals?
And if yes, how did that impact their society? I feel like, in the real world and the way we tend to "other" anything different and justify exploitation in any way possible, it'd result in some kinda racism. So that brings me back to my initial question. Yeamh.

Wonderful addition, yay!
With that said, I am torn between believing what they say and the science of the deep ocean-
As in, it's very high pressure, most things that actually live in the deep sea physically cannot safely come up because they'll decompress into a blob.
And if we reference the species Jade and Floyd are supposed to be related to(green moray eels), they aren't from the deep sea at all! Their range reaches down to within the twilight zone(where light from the surface begins to fade, starting at 2m deep and ending at 1000m), approximately 30-40 meters of depth, but it's nowhere near the actual deep ocean which only starts at 200m deep.
Now, Azul doesn't really have a more specific species to reference, but let's take ✨️the common octopus ✨️, they do live deeper and can be found all the way near the 200m depth threshold- but not any further and much more commonly hang out closer to shore because of the food.
I honestly think people who wrote twst just didn't do their marine biology research, but for the sake of the argument, I'd say perhaps the "depth" of the ocean is also narrator bias. Because like. They would not be fine closer to the surface. Sure, there's probably potions, but chugging them to poke your head out of the water seems silly and merpeople seem to do that all the time.

So, disclaimer, I'm not through the whole plot of twisted wonderland (I'm in the middle of book 5) partially because I just have a life and partially because I'm more interested in interacting with the fandom and working on animating Floyd stuffing marshmallows into his mouth.
With that said, this is my impression of book 7.

To prove my point I'm been winning at potionmaking with my friends @theeyesthatstarefromthebush and @lycoris707 and I've been a dick the whole time😂
I'd absolutely crash out if I was losing too.
On another note, imagine this game in twst, but it's used as like, flashcards for studying. Imagine the boardgame club inventing it together and Azul trying to sell it for a high price. But most people just think it's more homework and it's the two idiots of the boardgame club manically laughing playing it.
I find it so funny that I have so many twst OCs (that I am yet to post) but I cannot come up with my version for Yuu.
I understand that usually Yuu is just a self-insert.
But I already have a self-insert(sorta).
Other than the fact that given the choice why would I stay a magicless regular human who probably really misses their family-
I'm way too confrontational and ambitious and etc to actually fill Yuu's shoes well 😂
I fit right in with the rest of the NRC assholes, I will not fix them, I will make them so much worse.

Narrator bias is extremely tasty yeah 🤤
I don't have more to add to your wonderful ideas as I just agree with them, I just wanna mention that I kinda have a whole OC related to the royal family with lore around this theory of mine 😂
And I remembered a comment I didn't voice on your idea about anglerfish mermaids and the like. I think for every merperson terrified/disgusted of a certain kind of fishier merpeople because of their full-fish counterpart, there will be a human out there who's really really into it. At least, judging from the real-world internet...
Like there is at the very least absolutely no way someone out there hasn't been horridly indecent towards Azul bc they find the idea of his tentacles attractive and he would super not get it bc he's so insecure.
I'm too busy in my personal life to finish my twst OC drawings OR to finish the lore of twst itself so y'all are just gonna need to listen to my mad-man ramblings that might even have a canon explanation.

To some extent, I also wonder just how much the whole "descended from animals" thing is even valid for beastfolk in the first place to draw parallels like that. I mean, like, it SOUNDS like some racist bullshit don't it? Maybe that's not true, maybe they just happen to be a different kind of species. And maybe it's the same for fishier merpeople, maybe the whole "descended from fish" is bullshit and they're just a different kind of merpeople. Or maybe it is true but it's greatly exaggerated by their media.
I agree with everything you say and I definitely think there'd be some pushback stereotypes for humanlike merpeople, but the real question is, would they have the same implications?
I feel like fishier merfolk are more likely to the the oppressed ones at least historically. At the end of the day Atlantica/Coral Sea is one country, and said country is run by the royal family, who is 100% the more humanlike merpeople. Monarchies also tend to have their friends and family in court, not elected officials, if there's a social divide you could also almost most certainly guarantee the whole court is humanlike merpeople. And if they run the country, they'll set the regulations and policies and so on accordingly. They're the ones in relative control of the media too. What IF, the talking fish in "my little mermaid" of their world were never even fish - what if they're caricatures of more fishlike merpeople?
Twst is also full of "narrator bias", and Azul, Floyd and Jade all describe the Coral Sea as a relatively hostile environment with some level of food scarcity. But what if that was just their personal experience, what if that's not true for everyone? The royal family sure seems well off.
With that in mind, does it really MATTER that some fishlike merpeople consider humanlike merpeople "behind the times"? Wouldn't they be justified to hate the monarchy? Sure it's not good to go "boo, landdweller", but is that nearly as bad as the discrimination they possibly face; 🤔

This actually also makes me think about how gender would play a role into the whole thing.
Based on My Little Mermaid, which is supposedly at least somewhat canon to twst, the royal family adheres to patriarchy. By extension, it'd be easy to assume that the whole society is somewhat patriarchal, and for more "human" merpeople that'd even make sense how it happened, as women would look visually different from men at the very least in the chest area. We could also assume that internally their sex-based characteristics divide would be closer to humans, where sure, intersex people are as common as gingers, but are overall still a minority.
But how'd that impact the "fishier" merpeople? Most actual fish don't have nearly the same kind of sex-based divide. Some might have more differences in their colouration and size and etc as their traits of sexual dimorphism, but some don't even have that, and it's common for fish to either change sex throughout their lives or be both at the same time, and many other things.
For example, when I looked into green moray eels specifically, they're intersex until they reach full maturity.
Tumblr media
So, is it more likely for the "fishier" merpeople to have larger diversity in sexual characteristics and as a result, gender expression? Would that further the amount of discrimination that they face? Would the ideas of gender-diversity and queerness be more directly tied to the "fish" kind of merpeople in people's minds, and would their society as a result, villainize both? Would said queerness be condemned within some communities of "fish" merpeople because of a fear that it makes them look bad or adhere to stereotypes?
Did I make this too philosophical lmao? I don't care

I mean, if they have titties or not depends on if they're full-fish or a hybrid of an aquatic mammal and a fish, me thinks. My personal headcanon is that all merpeople are mammals to an extent since like irl aquatic mammals are the ones most likely to build a civilisation if they were given opposable thumbs.

Say hi to my Captain Hook and Mr.Smee twst OCs :D
They are part of my NRC Uni AU, and are the Housewarden and Vise-Housewarden of their dormitory based on Captain Hook! They do not currently have names and I am open to suggestions.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I don't have much on these characters since I wanted to screw around with the designs more than anything else, but as a fun fact, Ms.Smee has made a friendship bracelet for almost everyone in their dormitory. I will probably reveal more of their personal motivations in the post where I talk about their dormitory, or I'll go back and edit this post when I'm more coherent. Here's a sum up of their relationship though:
Besides that, their relationship can be described as Captain bragging about her "heroic achievements" to their friends, spotting a bug nearby, and jumping on Ms.Smee yelling "Kill it Smee! Kill with fire!" in between excessively girly screams.
If there were to be an overblot arc with these characters, it's definitely going to be Ms.Smee overblotting bc she's overworking herself for Captain's sake and feeling majorly unappreciated for all her efforts. Captain herself does really value Ms.Smee and loves her but is often too self-absorbed and emotionally repressed to express it in any normal way.
Also, bonus:
Tumblr media
Eepy Captain.
In the summer she sleeps in light-pink shorts with a darker-pink heart pattern. I cannot post it here since she sleeps shirtless :P

Ever since I got into TWST, I've been wondering why NRC is called college if it's a high school and where are all the women studying magic if both of the most prestigious magic academies are all-boys-schools
While I have realised it's a vocational school and perhaps the plot answers my question about women at some point in the story that I didn't yet read, it still made me think what if NRC was an actual college(uni) instead, one that is co-ed but has segregated male-and-female dorms.
So, I'll be working on some redesigns and some lore for the ✨️NRC Is An Actual College AU✨️ (where I'm probably also gonna expand the cast a lot with OCs and expand on my headcanons about the existing characters). Stay tuned if you're curious✨️
I'm mostly making this post rn so I can later link it for explanations to my art and I will later go back and edit it to add links to the posts with the designs and lore:)
