How to Deal with Personal Creative Criticism

Remember that first drafts are meant to be choppy, disjointed, and badly made. The point of a first draft is to get ideas down, straight from your brain onto paper without any flowery creativity. If your first draft makes you question your skills as a creator, then you are doing it right!

Your ideas may seem unoriginal and boring but that is only because you have been thinking about those same ideas and styles for so long that they have become stale. Your ideas are not actually boring. Your audience will not think that they are boring because to them, your creations are new and they have never seen them before!

This is why it is good to take breaks if you are working on a long term project. It will help to keep things fresh and interesting if you are able to step away and do other things for a while. This way your thoughts won’t become stale.

Work on cutting the link you have between your own self worth and audience reactions. Start right now, because I will tell you, as wonderful as it is to have people tell you that you’re great because your art is great, it won’t ever be enough. The moment you go a week without anyone telling you this, you’ll start to feel like shit and that you aren’t good anymore. Your self worth should not be tied to anything, because no matter what you’re doing or where you are in life, you are worth something. 

Be positive about your work. Even if you feel you’re lying to yourself, it doesn’t matter. Once you cut out all negative talk about your own creations, being positive will become a habit and will greatly affect how you feel when you are creating. 

Don’t let negativity get to you. If there are legitimate issues with your work, listen and learn from them, but never let stupid, unrelated, and unhelpful criticism stick with you. People are always going to be shitty and passive aggressive when they see people creating unabashedly. They don’t want you to create wonderful new things. Why, I still don’t know, but they aren’t going to stop trying to make you feel like shit. But the thing is, they don’t know what they’re talking about, so why the hell should you listen?

Seek support from other creative people who understand. It helps to hear that you are not the only person feeling this way, and if your friend, who is a phenomenal creator, is also feeling the same, then you know that what your feeling, while understandable, is not necessarily true. 

Almost every creator will feel like their work is just the worst thing that has ever happened to humanity. Here’s a newsflash: CREATING IS NOT MEANT TO MAKE YOU FEEL LIKE THIS! It is supposed to make you feel wonderful and excited by these ideas that you’re coming up with, but because of the way we now attach our self-worth to monetary and audience responses, creating has become something that you can be BAD AT. You CANNOT be bad at creating. You just can’t. Of course, as creators you can always ALWAYS learn new or better ways to show or do things, but just because you do not receive constant validation from your followers does not make you a bad creator. 

You’re ideas are wonderful, even if random joe shmoe says they aren’t.  You’re ideas are not boring, even if your brain thinks they are.  Audience reactions are not the be all and end all. Did you enjoy making it? Yes? Good, that’s all that matters. Train yourself be your own cheerleader. Followers come and go with the tides, but you will still be creating. You may still have a lot to learn but that does not make you bad at creating. 

I love and support all of you creators, whether you feel this same way or not. Please be there to support each other, because honestly, we all need each other.

The people have spoken, and the people wanted more Voyd.  (I do, too!)

I wrote this comic largely out of spite after some mean anon sent a message saying they were pissy about me shipping Voyd with “the ugliest character.”  So I took it upon myself to make this as a big FUCK YOU because Brick is a treasure.

It makes sense to me that Brick’s speech pattern could be the result of a traumatic brain injury (specifically, aphasia).  Being a tank-type, she’s probably thrown into very violet situations more than the average Super. I also loved the idea of her slow speech being a perfect foil for Voyd’s excitable rapid-fire chatter, and how using ASL would turn the tables and have Voyd be more slow and careful while Brick can speak more eloquently. <3

The Official “Log Off” Protest F.A.Q! 

The “Log Off” protest is in response to the recent NSFW ban announced by Tumblr. The ban flags all content the filtering system detects as NSFW, reducing visibility to the community. The system has proven time and time again that is inefficient, oftentimes flagging SFW material as NSFW. 

This SFW material includes art, memes and so on. This ban directly hurts the community and will not solve the actual problems at hand due to the poor flagging system. Because of this, the entire community will suffer.  

So to respond, I propose that every user on Tumblr logs off of Tumblr for 24 hours on December 17th at 12 am EST.
