However, it can be assumed that this transition will not be instantaneous, suggesting that autonomous vehicles will have to be capable of driving in a mixed environment, with both humans and autonomous vehicles. Given the current capabilities of autonomous vehicles, one can easily imagine autonomous vehicles being released on the road in the near future. Users that have a high reliance on the navigation are less sensitive to the changes in external factors and less likely to change their habits easily. Early and late arrivals, higher congestion level and shorter trips, typically led to a decrease in a driver’s tendency, especially in their compliance. Long-term users have more hidden states and less clear dividing line between each hidden state. There were three types of tendencies, strong, weak, and transition states, that existed within the data, each of which generated different probabilities of compliance and active usage. In the case study, it was found that long-term (used for more than 45 weeks) and short-term (used for less than 45 weeks) users had different tendency transition patterns. The dataset used in this study is from 1740 Metropia users collected over a period of two years. An assumption is made that one’s actual usage is only dependent on the driver’s current tendency, which is only dependent on their tendency at the last recorded time point. Essentially, a driver’s hidden patterns refer to his or her tendency to follow the route an app recommends. A first-order Mixture Hidden Markov Model was employed to find the hidden patterns of drivers’ usage conditions, which are defined as an individual’s active usage of navigation and their tendency to comply with navigation route instructions. The objective of this paper is to investigate the transition of navigation behavior using longitudinal data recorded by the Metropia app. Results from this study contribute to the development of more intelligent ADAS that could improve drivers’ comfort and safety.
