One thing I find most ironic about the new ending is that Long Quiet basically creates the world The Narrator truly would have loved: one in which Death has never been part of its Laws right from the cradle, one that "always moves but never decays"... But for that to happen Long Quiet basically gets rid of Narrator's old world and builds a fresh one, because really, why would he bother keeping some raving ghost's dying little speck of dirt alive? Out of pity and the kindness of his heart? When he reaches this ending it's very clear he has neither.
