Is There a Neurofeedback Tsunami| Mind Body Devices
I think so and its name is Synchrony. Synchrony training is of great interest to many Neurofeedback practitioners. However, there seems to be a number of opinions about what synchrony means. We hope to add to the confusion by explaining our views. We will also explain why we feel synchrony training is an important part of Neurofeedback’s present and an even more important part of its future.
As multiple channel Neurofeedback systems come into fashion synchrony strategies will become critically important to this field. Stroebel, Fehmi, Green and others came to the view that there was a special relationship between EEG Synchrony and quality of some mind states in the early 70’s.
This insight came as a result of measuring the synchrony present as unusually gifted individuals demonstrated relatively high orders of perception and self-regulation.Not many are aware that the Nobel Laureate Francis Crick, coming from the traditional neuroscience “Binding” theory of consciousness, is reported to have speculated that EEG Synchrony may be an accessible and practically usable signature of consciousness. To quote from his book Astonishing Hypothesis, ” Both German groups suggested that these 40hz oscillations might be the Brain’s answer to the binding problem. They proposed that the neurons symbolizing all the different attributes of a single object (shape, color, movement, etc.) would bind these attributes to each other by firing together in synchrony.”
Now, Crick is limiting his investigation to visual awareness or “consciousness”. His notion is that synchronous firing is a way different types of neurons bind their different perceptions producing the phenomenon of consciousness. Others are signing on to this speculation. I doubt they are aware of the work that inspired the same kind of insight by early biofeedback researchers.
Our considerable experience with synchrony training has convinced us that it has substantial applications with problem patients including Alpha P and Minus types. However, we believe that synchrony will play an even greater role in Performance / Life Enhancement training. The value of right / left hemispheric synchrony training is widely recognized but less is known about rear /frontal. It is a reasonable hypothesis that rear / frontal is at least as important and relates to perception of the principle, the idea, the vision, if you will, and then the bringing of that vision into the real world, via the frontal lobes.
Our views are based on clinical observations and obviously hypothetical as much more controlled research needs to be done. As we all know there is almost no funding available for such research so we are forced to use our clinical observations as a practical way of arriving at our working hypothesis until society realizes the incredible value of what we are working on and provides adequate research funding.
There are several versions of what synchrony is when it comes to EEG feedback. Let me try to tell you how we are looking at it. Also, some of you will find the following technical jargon daunting as I do. I’m quite dependent on the assistance and interpretation of our technical team (Stroebel, Caldwell and Pitchittino). In 1986 when we first decided to take on the task of creating the first and hopefully the best computerized NeuroFeedback training system in the world, we were told by some well trained technical people that we would never be able to deliver true NeuroFeedbacik synchrony on four brain quadrants within one second epochs. Others including Chuck Stroebel and Les Fehmi said it could be done and by 1989 we had done it.
We put together a form of synchrony, which from our point of view has been exceptionally successful. Some say we just got lucky but that luck was founded on John Pitchittino and Sam Caldwell’s brilliant execution of Chuck Stroebel’s algorithm. Because our philosophy is to try to integrate into our software all ideas that we believe have merit, we wound up with four types of synchrony in the DOS software and have introduced a fifth version in the new CapScan Windows Solution. Our intention has always been to make all valid synchrony algorithms available so practitioners can do their own experimentation and decide for themselves what works best.

Celebrity Suicides Bring Light To A Hidden Problem
On June 5, 2018 fashion designer Kate Spade hung herself. Her husband Andy said, “Kate suffered from depression and anxiety for many years. The most recent stressor may have been her husband filing for divorce after 24 years of marriage. This led to severe depression according to a Page-6 article by Yaron Steinbuch.
Soon after the death of Kate Spade Anthony Bourdain, celebrity cook, best-selling author of Kitchen Confidential and star of TV series A Cook’s Tour, and Parts Unknown, was found dead in a Paris hotel room. He also apparently hung himself.
Here are some statistics from the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention:
It is the 10th leading cause of death in the United States of America
44,965 Americans die each year in the USA
For each actual death there are another 25 attempts
The costs to the USA is $69 Billion annually
One of the statistics that surprised me is that 7 out of 10 people who killed themselves in 2016 were white males. This seems unusual in a way because this is the group that appears to be the most privileged in America. You would think that they would have the least reason to want to kill themselves. This brings to mind the saying that money doesn’t buy happiness.
Another disturbing statistic is related to deaths in the military. More service members are killing themselves than are dying in combat. Give that a minute to sink in. According to the AFSP there were 295 combat-related deaths in the year 2012, which is a terrible loss of life. Even worse though, in that same year were 349 service people killed themselves. They also state that 20% of all suicides are committed by veterans. Obviously, the military is not looking to broadcast this information. It could have a negative effect on the morale of service people and public support, as well as for recruitment and retention.
It would be very safe to say the people who serve in the military are under high levels of stress that can be chronic. Many of them have suffered from physical and or mental trauma, and some brain injury. Some have never been assessed or treated properly.
I believe that many people decide to kill themselves when they are not able to think clearly enough to look at the options they have to handle the problems that they find themselves in. We have all had times that we were so upset that we had difficulty thinking clearly. People who are experiencing acute or chronic anxiety or depression may be experiencing similar but magnified difficulty thinking clearly. For them suicide may seem like the only way out of the problem. Anxiety and depression can be complex problems to conquer and the more tools people have to work with the better. Biofeedback and neurofeedback can be therapy tools that can help people learn at least partial control over their physiology which can help to calm the nervous system and help a person feel better and help them feel that they have more control not only over their body but also over their situation.

Managing Anger, Mind/Body Techniques
Poor anger management can have serious consequences. What are some of the things that people do when they become angry? People say things that they later regret. Once something is said, you can’t really take it back. You can apologize but that doesn’t erase it from the record. Some of the effects of what has been said still exist. Saying something in anger can lead to a big argument, the break up of an important relationship, termination from a job, a physical altercation, and even the loss of life. Many people have been shot and killed as a result of something they said during a road-rage incident for example.
This leads to another thing that people do when they become angry. People physically do things as a result of the anger they feel. They throw things, punch holes in walls, hit people, and break things. Are these reactions to anger automatic? They may appear to be but they are not. From the time the anger is initiated to the time of the reaction, there is a period of time, even though it may be relatively short. During this time a decision is made to react. Words don’t come out of your mouth without thinking of what to say. You cannot punch a hole in a wall without thinking of doing it, forming a fist, and aiming it at the wall. The period of time may only be seconds or even fractions of a second. Within that time options of what to do and possible consequences can be weighed before a decision is made.
How can you use that time and maybe even increase the amount of time taken in making a decision on reacting? Using the power of the mind/body connection can help greatly. Biofeedback is a perfect tool to use for training your mind/body system to react more appropriately. Sometimes we refer to this type of training as self-regulation training. When we become angry our nervous system becomes more activated. It triggers changes in our brain, cardiovascular system, and our muscular system. We can use biofeedback devices or instruments to measure these changes. We can practice increasing our level of control over these changes. We use EMG (Electromyograph) biofeedback to measure how tense our muscles are. A good level for relaxation might be about 3 microvolts. When a person becomes angry, their muscle tension can exceed 80 microvolts. They might not even notice that they are that tense in a moment of anger. If they have practiced using EMG biofeedback regularly, they become much more aware and mindful of their level of tension. They notice when their muscles go from being relaxed to becoming even slightly more tense. This gives them time to release the tension quickly rather than allowing it to continue. It is much more difficult to react without thinking when you release the excess muscle tension before you react. Heart Rate Variability (HRV) biofeedback is a measure of how our cardiovascular system is reacting. When a person becomes angry there are noticeable changes in their HRV measures. Simply pausing to slow and deepen your breathing for even a few seconds can cause significant changes in your HRV which help to calm your nervous system and thus allow for healthier reactions.
It is much easier to learn mind/body self-regulation with biofeedback tools because you can see the changes as they are happening, whether they are negative or positive. With practice, eventually, you won’t need to rely on the instruments. You will have developed an internal sensitivity that will allow you to notice the subtle changes in the moment and make the proper adjustments before reacting in a way that you would regret.
