The ballad of songbirds and snakes
Plot. 64 years before the 74th Hunger Games, 10 years after the Rebellion, the once wealthy and powerful Snow family is now struggling, with 18-year-old Coriolanus Snow, his 21-year-old cousin Tigris Snow, and their grandmother being the last living members.
personal thoughts:
This is one of the best prequels i have ever seen, it touches perfectly on the other victors stories from mags to katniss. It also brings an entirely new view onto the games as we can now see it from the view of someone outside of the games, which i think made the games to an extent more human as now looking back at coral or mizzen them going on to form alliances and end up being some of the first careers dont make them these threats looming over our heads but rather kids just wanting to go home. The small details make snows story even more realistic like with the prominent family names such as heavensbee, crane and flickerman. It was interesting to see tigris snow's story as we briefly meet her at mockingjay where we find out that she was a stylist in the games until snow kicked her out. This all added up to a worthy and good sequel to the original trilogy.
Personal thoughts spoilers:
Throughout this movie a lot of snows personal traits were shown through other characters which i think just added more to the title. How he cheated by giving lucy gray the rat poison to kill the other tributes similarly to how he goes to poison casca highbottom and how he ends up becoming the president through this. This is a more sensitive topic but it makes this story line much more true and honest as they have recently come out of a war that almost lead to the extinction of panem, but tigris and lucy gray are heavily hinted at having to sell their bodies to make sure food was on the table. Snow who has been sheltered by all of these burdens by tigris is immature about it even when both tigris and lucy gray tell him that, this is what they had to do to, quoting tigris “Then be kind, Coryo, and try not to look down on people who had to choose between death and disgrace” yet he does constantly even going as far as selling the "attractive" tributes some as young as 16. If they reject this? their family and loved ones are killed.
The intense amount of care that is shown for these characters are most prominent in the book and film. I mean by the names as each of their names mean something much deeper then some of the original names and meaning in the original trilogy. I do have some complaints tho, as the pacing of the third and final part was not up to par as it was rushed in the book and subsequently in the movie. I think it would have made more sense if snow had at least stayed with Lucy gray in the cabin for a day before going into his psychotic episode rather than less then 12 hours in.

Mockingjay
Description: Katniss Everdeen, girl on fire, has survived, even though her home has been destroyed. There are the rebels. There are the new leaders. A revolution is unfolding. It is by design that Katniss was rescued from the arena in the cruel and haunting quarter quell, and it is by design that she has long been part of the revolution without knowing it. District 13 really does exist and now it has come out of the shadows and its plotting to overthrow the capitol, everyone, it seems has had a hand in the carefully laid plans except Katniss.
Personal thoughts no spoilers:
This is not one of the best books out of the trio, but i do think as a dystopian novel itself its remarkable and able to capture the essence of a revolution. The movie shouldnt have been in two parts as it is a 390 page book. This book is the heavier and more complicated compared to the others especially. through the eyes of Katniss who is a mentally unstable 17 year old. the epilogue makes the entire book worth it even the bittersweet ending .
Personal thoughts spoilers:
Even though this book and movie is by far not the best out of the three i do think that Mockingjay holds a lot more meaning in the terms of the dystopian novel. How the entire of district 13 runs is an insanely blatant parallel to the capitol except about who rules it. district 13 is completely underground and self sustained using high end technology that we even read being used in the ballad of songbirds and snakes. Where everyone is given food based of off how much they need and severely punished and beaten if they eat to much or to little. Alma coin is the president of district 13 and is described as snake like. She rules with an iron fist and is extremely power hunger as we see how far lengths she will go to keep Katniss under her control. To the point she was willing to kill Katniss and purposefully had primrose killed at 13. The other victors are exploited by coin with Betee being transferred immediately after catching fire to the weapons division while still in his hospital bed while Katniss even after severe injuries is never fully allowed to rest and is constantly brought to meetings and creating "Propos". Katniss's mental health is rarely cared for and it seems as if most of district 13 does not understand that Katniss is a 17 year old with severe PTSD from both games that she played in the span of a year while loosing someone and watching one of the two people she loved be tortured because of her. The ending of Mockingjay solidifies who Katniss really in the face of the revolution, a pawn. She was used by snow as someone who should have riled down the districts and by coin as the face of the rebellion taking it to lengths of willingly allowing her to die. She is even used by Plutarch as stated in the letter he gives her after she kills coin where he says "you were exactly who i believed", this proves he knew Katniss would kill coin and he most likely benefited from it. One major thing at the ending was the bombs used by district 13 that they had disguised as capitol bombs, this is something that does actually happen and has ever since the idea of war has started where the perpetrator plays the victim. Especially with how even killing the medics seemed as prim was 13 at the time and was to young to even be working yet coin allowed for this to happen knowing it would kill her.

YESSSS
Katniss is like Lucy Gray this, Katniss is like Sejanus that, and yes find that's all good and true and lovely but Katniss Everdeen is also a direct parallel to Coriolanus Snow and people NEED to start talking about this because it's driving me crazy.
Think about it: they both grew up poor and deeply vulnerable, losing parents at a very young age, with a matriarchal adult (Katniss' mother and Coriolanus' Grandma'am) who fails to provide for them emotionally and physically. They intimately understand the threat of starvation, even developing with stunted growth because of it, and their narrations in the books share a fixation on food. Throughout their childhoods, both experienced constant fear and suffered a fundamental lack of control over their circumstances. Because of this, they're inherently suspicious of the people around them. They resent feeling indebted to others, especially those who have saved their lives. They're motivated almost entirely by family and deeply connected to their communities. Both are used and manipulated by the Capitol, both are forced to perform to survive and despise every inch of it, both are thrown into the Arena and made to kill. Both have a self-sacrificial, genuinely sweet sister figure acting as their conscience. Peeta and Lucy Gray - performers and love interests with a fundamental kindness and sense of hope about them - fulfill markedly similar roles in their narrative. Both contribute to the development of the future Hunger Games, Snow throughout tbosas and Katniss towards the end of Mockingjay.
It's easy to ignore these similarities because, as mirrors of each other, they are exact opposites. Katniss is from District 12, viewed and treated as less than human; Snow is the cream of the Capitol crop, given the privilege of a name with social weight, an ancestral home, and the opportunity of the Academy despite having no more money than a miner from 12. Katniss has no agency over her life, and responds by being kind whenever she's able, while Snow justifies horrendous evils in order to continue his quest for complete control. Katniss does everything she can to protect her family; Snow does everything he can to protect his family's image as an extension of his own ego. Katniss loves her District and connects with its inhabitants on a meaningful level, but Snow is indifferent at best to his peers - the apparent "superior people" - and only engages with his community for personal gain. Katniss emerges from the Arena horrified at herself and the system, but Snow takes his trauma and turns it into an excuse to perpetuate the violence with himself at the top. Katniss cares for Prim until her death and then snaps at the loss of her little sister, while Snow survives on Tigris' blood, sweat, and tears and then torments and abandons her, presumably because she calls him out on his insanity. Snow actively adds to and popularizes the Hunger Games because of his vendetta against the Districts following his childhood wartime trauma - Katniss briefly agrees to a new Hunger Games in the pursuit of vengeance, but later stops them from happening by killing Coin and choosing a life of peace and privacy. Snow is obsessed with revenge, but Katniss empathizes with the Capitolites and does what she can to keep them from suffering. He exists in a cruel system and selfishly upholds it; she exists in a cruel system and works to dismantle it for the good of her family and community, at great personal cost. And Peeta and Lucy Gray are incredibly similar, but Katniss and Peeta forge a relationship of genuine love and understanding that shines in comparison to Coriolanus' obsessive projection onto Lucy Gray.
So, yeah, Katniss is Lucy Gray haunting Coriolanus. But I bet you anything that eighty-something year old President Snow looks at her, the girl on fire, bright and young and brilliant, emerging from a childhood of starvation with a relentless hunger for success, a talented and charming performer helping her win the Games, and he sees the ghost of his own past. And that's why he's so afraid of her! Because if he sees himself in her, then he's up against his own cunning, his own talent for manipulation, his own charisma, his own genius. He's up against the version of himself that he once wished to be, with the nightmare army of his childhood at her back and her star-crossed lover at her side, spewing Sejanus' truths in his own voice. This isn't to say that Katniss ever achieved the level of power and agency that Coriolanus did during her time with the rebellion, but it is to say that Snow was taken down by what truly terrified him - his own morality, come to finish the job.

Catching fire

Description:Catching Fire details the aftermath of Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark's victory in the 74th Hunger Games from the first novel. Despite leaving the arena, Katniss and her loved ones are in more danger than ever as the threat of punishment looms.
personal thoughts:
Catching fire is by far the best book and movie out of all of the books and movies, the plot is interesting and makes sense for the previous books and movies. Its able to show different sides of Peeta and Katniss. Through the plot were now able to see panem through other victors and this creates an immersive atmosphere. World building in the book is better and suzanne collins has clearly made another amazing book. The new victors are some of the best characters with Joanna mason and Finnick being interesting funny and bring out different sides of katniss and peeta.

Hunger games
FUCKING AMAZING ITSD EVERYTHING U WANT IT TO BE.
Description:
300 years into the future where all countries have died out of either war or global warming the last country left is Panem. Panem has suffered a civil war the "dark days" where almost all 13 districts at the time rebelled agaisnt the capitol. District 13 being bomed and now ending the war with only 12 districts. Ever since the war has ended in return for the districts rebelling a "hunger games" will be held where children from the ages of 12-18 will be picked one girl and one boy from each district. Where only one will come out. Katniss everdeen a 16 year old from district 12 is forced into the games.
its an amazing dystopian novel that is YA and actually good. commentary on the US and other countries the love triangle makes actual sense and there's no bullshit sex scenes.
personal thoughts:
Katniss's character builds up so much of the other characters as she is the bread winner of her family. This explains as to why she does not have the same sense of self as Peeta as he can afford to have more views on himself while she has proven time and time again her personality to her hobbies are based off of her family where she hunts for food and sacrifices her self for the people she loves. The diversity of her character builds up a lot for tbosas and its actually refreshing to see a female character that does not end up being so insanely shallow and who can use things that are feminine to add to her character like the "girl on fire" trope that does not down play her. The world building makes sense for the time where the technology adds up to how they modern technology but are placed in a classist regime. Unlike the bitch who calls her self JK Rowling and her random shitty world building like no body believes your shit excuse for making Dumbledore gay after like 15 years of finishing all the books
World building:10/10
Diversity:9/10
Substance:9.5/10
Overall:9.5/10
