Strategies for Close Reading
Story Mapping- appropriate for fiction texts-Setting, Characters, Problem/Goal, Sequence of Events, Outcome, Theme
SOAPS- Speaker, Occasion,Audience, Purpose, Subject-suitable for non-fiction and persuasive texts
Connections- good readers identify connections to own life, world, other texts
Questions and Answers-can be Right There (a) stated in text directly Think and Search (2) inferred and constructed across the text Author and You (3) derived from connecting what you already know to the information the author is sharing On My Own (4) require use of background knowledge to formulate opinion, with or without the text
Arguments and Evidence- identify author’s claims or main ideas in non-fiction or persuasive passage and evaluate the evidence
Assumptions- consider author’s explicit or implicit assumptions
Appeals- is the author using logic, ethical concerns or emotional pleas to advance their narrative or arguments?
Practical Advice for Interacting with the Text (Annotating)
pre-reading- identify genre, notice the title and pictures, make predictions
read first to get the gist of a text
re-read the text in manageable chunks
circle unknown words
write your emotional reactions, connections in margin
underline main ideas or themes
highlight or bracket important information
record your questions
summarize sections of the text to monitor your comprehension- What’s going on here?
notice the author’s craft-word choice (diction), figurative language, mood created, organization and order of words (syntax)
consider the context - either historical or author’s background
