I need to talk about the way the show turned handcuffs into a symbol for controlling Dongsik every time they were brought up. in the flashbacks, it's from the police and investigators who did a rushed job, controlling the image and impact of the situation by putting him in handcuffs. he's shown the prosthetic fingers while still handcuffed, he is photographed in them. it controls his reputation for the next couple of decades. then when he's arrested based on Joowon's 'reasonable doubt' after he baits everyone using the burner phone with Joowon's text, the blood print in his basement etc. it's again a way of holding control in the game that Dongsik himself started but Joowon insists his motive is justice. and Dongsik retaliates by allowing himself to be photographed while in handcuffs, taking back control. then when Joowon handcuffs himself to Dongsik to stop him from leaving without an explanation before they catch the killer with evidence. it's framed as a way to prevent evasion but Joowon puts himself on the same line and it makes Dongsik lash out because it's the wrong time. but finally, in the climax, they become a symbol of commitment instead of control. they're not impersonal. he isn't treated as less than human. it's the most important moment of the show and the cold pair of handcuffs are almost as warm as rings of commitment because Dongsik ASKS for it. he's respected for what he's handing over willingly to Joowon. and the person who bows, who actually is brought to his knees, is the person who puts the handcuffs on Dongsik. in that moment, it's reframed as something almost sacred because Dongsik himself gives it a new meaning.
