me when my shizun reveals that i was meant to be a bloodthirsty, lust-driven monster who bedded three hundred women and never loved a single one of them and who could scarcely separate my own desires from that of my sword and who hoarded more and more riches for happiness i couldnt buy and accumulated so much blood on my hands i couldnt ever wash clean and i was bitter and lonely and vengeful but even so, he loved me. he loved me so much he died cursing the gods for making me unhappy. he loved me so much he transcended worlds to come make me happy. there was an evil overlord demanding he be cruel to me, and despite that, he gave me medicine, he smiled at me, he pat my head and believed in me and loved me. he came from a world with no cultivation nor swordfighting, yet he protected me. it was probably scary and he had no one to confide in, and i made it so much worse, i misunderstood him, trapped him, hurt him, and yet he loved me. he loved me so hard he resewed the threads of fate and rewrote my destiny, are you fucking kidding?

and another reason yoo sangah going from idealized heroine to just a person over the course of the novel is one of my favourite character arcs ever is that it refutes the idea that yoo sangha's kindness is somehow unique or unexpected - out of the reach of mere mortals like you and me. the initial world of orv is bleak to say the least. without the rules of society, and with the dokkaebi encouraging violence, we see the worst of the every day man. in this apocalypse we get the shining ray of hope of yoo sangah, whose good seems almost superhuman in the face of such grimness. only a heroine could always be so kind, dokja sighs to himself, watching her. but the rug gets pulled out from under us as the pepper incident is revealed, and we learn that yoo sangah isn't always kind, and it isn't certainly isn't effortless. her goodness isn't something only a protagonist could pull off - rather offering food to people who is hungry, trying to protect a child, even simply offering a kind word to a coworker - are all things done by just a person. it's something kim dokja doesn't need to keep separated in it's own box, but can recognize in himself as well. kindness is something we can expect from anyone, and something we can expect from ourselves. if yoo sangah can do it, so can anyone.

i feel like something that's missing from some people's understanding of kink fiction and fantasy is, like... in fiction and fantasy, everything is in-scene.

when real people do kink in real life, you gotta do all that good out-of-scene stuff like discuss boundaries, set limits and expectations, check in with each other, do aftercare, et cetera et cetera et cetera... but in fiction, everything can be in-scene!

the people in that fanfic don't exist any more than, like, the make-believe sexy football star and make-believe sexy cheerleader in a couple's roleplay exist. that couple doesn't need to get into character and then pretend to be a sexy football star having an important consent conversation with a sexy cheerleader, because that's a conversation that's already happened out-of-scene and out-of-character. (i mean, if you're into in-character negotiations, chase your bliss.) when they're in that scene, they can just pretend to be a sexy football star having sex with a sexy cheerleader. that's okay.

so like. when fiction does kink in a way that would be unsafe or harmful irl... just keep in mind that you're not watching actual people neglecting check-ins or ignoring their set contract or genuinely harming each other. you're watching a scene without the behind-the-scenes bits, and that's okay.
