post where i
beryl switches from friendly to hostile and back at the drop of a hat towards other crypters but what kadoc finds most unsettling about it is that the friendliness is genuine
ophelia wonders why kirschtaria would trust someone known to kill for fun but kirschtaria says that’s exactly why he trusts beryl to uphold his end
“Beryl is as good at deceiving himself as he is others. The more distasteful he finds a job, the more earnestly he will work to see it done.”
koyanskaya went to assassinate guda at beryl’s request and this chapter on her end is used to highlight how she similarly is a vicious sadist but very earnest and thorough about upholding her contracts
beryl and koyanskaya seem to vibe early on for this reason but by 5.2 her opinion of him has dropped and he has to dangle the dragon of albion in front of her to get her help. when she takes the bait he cheerfully says they’re the same kind of good for nothing
“it doesn’t matter if it’s an enemy or ally. you’re nothing more than a starving wild dog that persistently seeks out prey. you kill those that bore you. you kill those that you have a rationale to kill. and finally, you kill those that would be pitiable in death. that’s your fetish, isn’t it? i haven’t any interest in a creature like you”
koyanskaya’s goal is to grow nine tails and become a beast of humanity while retaining her identity as koyanskaya. normally tamamo as offshoot of amaterasu would upon regaining nine tails return to being amaterasu
beryl’s material profile says he likes pitiable people and interesting people, and dislikes boring people and people who look like they’re having fun
beryl’s profile describes him as “He’s normally a talkative and sociable young man, but when he gets serious, he turns into a malicious and ferocious serial killer. He may look thuggish at first glance, but he’s an understanding gentleman when you actually talk to him.”
kirschtaria notes that beryl doesn’t have a servant, though context isn’t clear if it means he doesn’t have one with him or doesn’t have one at all
beryl’s mother lives in the ancient forests of england and is incompatible with modern science/consumerist society. she’s definitely not human but that’s all we know
beryl inherited this incompatibility to an extent and his profile lists witchcraft and gardening as his talents but even so he prefers not to use magecraft and favors a gun instead
beryl in kirsch’ flashback singularities cheerfully warns him “But be careful, okay~? I’m weak and whimsical. Some impetus might just have me turning over to enemy’s side. You better keep a tight leash on me now”
beryl later indeed kills kirschtaria “but on account that you said something like that, i just had to kill you. couldn’t be helped. let that everyone become as existences equal to the gods, hm? if that were a thing, it’d turn into a world where nobody could be killed, wouldn’t it? gimme a break, seriously. there’s a limit to how boring you could be. see, i’d like to remain exactly the piece of shit that i am. – becoming my best self is the sort of nonsense that i’d never want”
beryl is strongly interested in mashu and tried to break into her room back before she became an official staff member. after killing kirschtaria he tries to goad her into agreeing that he’s a reasonable person chaldea could reach an understanding with but when she says she never understood him he says he’s glad to have seen a different side of her
koyanskaya’s contract with the alien god was that the alien god would not attempt to understand her
aphrodite compares every crypter to an animal but when it comes to beryl, who is called a wolf (derogatory) at every turn, she can’t think of an animal he resembles at all
beryl is capable of setting a fantasy tree on fire
lostbelts are confirmed to be reflections of the crypters’ wishes. beryl’s lostbelt is one with a lostbelt depth of EX because of its incompatibility with humanity, a world of fairies with very little humans left.
he betrayed the fairies and they’re now hunting him for sport
beryl’s artist comment in fgo material is “I’m dying to see how his not yet revealed characterization and his connections to the other characters will play out in the story”
beryl isn’t fully human, that much is blatant at this point. but beryl also very decidedly is not whatever other creature he is “supposed” to be. when something disagrees with him he indulges in it. when something is suited to him he destroys it. whatever beryl is, it’s not what he wants for himself, and so he lives in contradiction to himself. his exterior is that of a wolf in human hide but the goddess who governs over hearts can’t see anything of the sort in his heart. beryl doesn’t want a world where everyone is their best self, because like koyanskaya his “best self” is not himself. he likes the pitiable good for nothings who fail to achieve anything, because he intends to never achieve what he’s meant for.
but the question is. is beryl’s nature to kill and his rejection of it to be friendly, or is it the other way around?
most everyone calls beryl a wolf, but the one most capable of seeing through to his nature doesn’t see any animal at all, and kirschtaria after saving the human order with him once is confident that beryl can be trusted to uphold his end of a deal. his preference for guns also contradicts this image. wouldn’t someone who revels in slaughter like an animal prefer something more up close and personal?
mashu was created to be galahad, who is like the pinnacle of goodness and purity and refuses to help mashu fight lostbelts for that reason, but mashu (and guda) is knee deep in the corpses of whole worlds. when she denies that beryl is the kind of friendly person you can reach an understanding with he looks pleased and says he’s glad to see a different side of her.
a persistent theme in fate is that it’s never too late to choose to do good, no matter how much evil you’re steeped in. but in lostbelt it becomes harder and harder to define what is truly ‘good’ when we have to trample countless lives for our own survival. and in beryl’s case. if he’s chosen evil all this time to deny his nature. choosing “good” might not be such a good idea.

“Not only is it so touching, the relation of the narrator to Jane and the family, but more importantly, to me, as a father, whose life has been changed by this show, that reveal meant so much. It’s almost like I was in a tv show and I saw the entire five years flash before my eyes. It was very, very moving. That [accent] may have been a nod to not only [Rogelio] and his roots, but to the entire culture.” — Anthony Mendez
