“If you read the biographies of people who have written good books, you often see the point where they suddenly come into themselves, and those weeks in the spring of 1997 were when I came into myself as a writer. They feel like some of the best weeks of writing I’ll ever have. The discovery that I could write better about something as trivial as an ordinary family dinner than I could about the exploding prison population of the United States, and the corporatization of American life, and all the other things I’d been trying to do, was a real revelation.” —Jonathan Franzen

On this day of thanks, we thank you—our readers and poets. Today’s poem: W. S. Merwin’s “Thanks.” "Listen with the night falling we are saying thank you we are stopping on the bridges to bow from the railings we are running out of the glass rooms with our mouths full of food to look at the sky and say thank you” Subscribe to Poem-A-Day and get a new, unpublished poem delivered to your inbox five days a week.

Just met you today at NYU's second poetry slam. You are absolutely adorable. I hope you keep up the enthusiasm and continue to host slam poetry!
I think it'll be a long long time before I lose any enthusiasm for hosting college slams. Y'all absolutely rocked it and showed such incredible bravery on Wednesday night. It was an honor to be there and I had a blast! Thank YOU!

i just wanted to say that i came across your poem "sheets" and every time i watch it, i cry. as someone who has been in and out of treatment for anorexia for almost 4 years now, no other poem has hit so close to home. i also have lived in new york city for my whole life and "when god happens" is so beautiful - you put into words all the feelings i've had about experiencing 9/11 as a new yorker. you are by far my favorite poet, please never stop!!
Well, if this wasn't one of the best messages I've ever woken up to Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. I can't stop and I won't.

I'm obsessed with your poetry. I absolutely adore your voice! Ugh. Enough drooling. What inspires your poems? What's your favorite song? Favorite book? Favorite time to write? xoxoxo -K (:
Hey there! Thanks for the love and questions.
1) feelings. all of the feelings. A general belief that the world is not as pretty as it could be and sometimes that's the best thing the world has going for it.
2) I work, live and love music so this is a really tough question to answer. But right now I really love the song "Methuselah" by San Fermin. I also am currently obsessed with "Don't Wake Me Up" by Lianne La Havas.
3) Another tough question! I loved Kerouac's "Big Sur." "Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close" is up there as well, so is "Crush" by Richard Siken. I could go on forever about this one though.
4) 11PM or 1AM.
Cheers, stranger!

I believe I may have fallen in love with your words. Old Haunts has touched me so deeply, to an extent I thought almost nothing could. You are ever so talented. If only I could navigate my own emotions the way you seem to. You are brilliant, really.
Hi CrystalDoves! Woah!! What an email to receive while at my desk trudging through the daily grind. Thank you so much for reaching. I'm glad we were able to connect. Please stay in touch.

I am relatively newly inversed into the world of poetry and one day, I happened to stumble with your performance of "When God Happens". I clicked play, I watched it... I cried. And I want to thank you for sharing feelings and thoughts, for making art for the world and for (unknowingly) helping me get through a though time.
Hey, this is a beautiful message to receive. Thanks for reaching out and sharing these kind words. I hope your finding things a bit easier these days!
Best,
Mike
