Mighty Mithi...What?
It is M-i-t-h-i not M-e-a-t-y. It sounds like the tagline of a famous hotdog brand in the Philippines that every kid would love to munch for breakfast or afternoon snack. However, Mithi (Mit-hi) is a Filipino word for ambition, ideal, earnest wish, or desire. Yes, my name is Mithi. I am Filipino, and mightily driven by my ambitions in life.
Mithi or ambition is what every parent teach to their children as they grow up; yet, my parents do not have that stereotypical mindset. They have never spoke to me of what they want me to become in the future. They have never discuss to me their expectations. They just encourage me to always do my best. So as a child, i have never thought of becoming someone; but i knew i should impress my parents, i always put my best foot forward in school and during playtime with my cousins and friendly neighbors. Every time my teacher would ask us to write how we see ourselves in 5, 10 or 20 years, like any other pupil, i enthusiastically imagine myself as a doctor, teacher, lawyer or a nun, but all of these never happened. I became a nurse, instead.
I grew up from a countryside in the Philippines with my parents and eldest sibling. We were farmers that did not own a farm. My father used to till a land owned by his uncle, planted seeds borrowed from the government but only got a share after harvest. My mother used to sell bread from my aunt’s bakeshop as early as 4 in the morning and come home at 7 with only 50 pesos compensation less than enough for us to eat for a day, on her rusty bicycle. My sibling is someone i looked up to besides my parents. He is smart and the most selfless man on Earth that i know. He sent me to school with all his might. This is my small and simple family.
Now, I have been married for 1 year, 6 months, and 14 days to a tough, conscientious and altruistic man. Like me, he also comes from a simple family. He had gone through a lot in life that made him the ever hardworking and kindest gentleman. i certainly became a better person because of him. He helps me realize things on different perspectives. Growing up from a poor family, even though it is a leap of faith, We were both reminded by our parents to earn a degree and land a decent job before marriage.
Three decades of my life taught me that i should open my mind to my purpose. To have a clear picture of who when, where, and what i want to be. It should be powerful that whenever i twist or turn, i will not cease. Life is a puzzle of thousand or million pieces of must solved experience that needs focus and patience. Some may refuse to start. Others may stop at the middle. As for me, i will definitely go for it. As Plato said, Nothing beautiful without a struggle. From a daughter who would just want to please her family, i turn to a woman who strives to make the best for the family.
Philippians 4:13 I can do all things through him who gives me strength. This is my life verse that strongly affects my motivation to achieve my dreams. We are a Catholic family. We go to church, pray the rosary, and read the bible. My mother always tell us to pray in every thing that we do especially our decisions and choices, family and friends. If people would ask me where i got all my confidence, i will not hesitate to say that it is my God, my faith that keeps me going. I have nothing in my life but God. He created me with love and that love is what i trust. i strongly believe in what He said that He strengthens me and hold me in His arms. Mithi is someone who chases far-reaching dreams with mighty faith.
