Just rewatched and the fact that Jinu acts shocked when Rumi tells him she can’t hear Gwi-Ma only strengthens this cuz Gwi-Ma literally told him he can’t reach her in the previous scene

Rumi and Jinu’s arcs in kpdh absolutely broke me. Like, movies don’t usually make me cry but this one was so close to bringing me to tears. Massive rant about their relationship with huge spoiler for the movie. GO WATCH IT, IT’S GREAT. God bless IB English class for making me unconsciously analyze any media I consume

Rumi was the victim of two cycles of psychological manipulation from Celine and Jinu. Throughout her whole life, Celine brought her up to believe her demon side was something to be ashamed of. Celine accidentally strengthened the demon side by fueling Rumi’s shame, preventing Rumi from facing her demons straight ahead. Celine never meant to hurt Rumi, genuinely believing to be helping her based on what she knew about demons. Celine didn’t know demons were beings of shame and misery, eternally punished for their regrets.

And then Jinu came along and exposed the truth about demons. Everything he said about demons to Rimu was true. However, their first meeting was just him manipulating her in order to figure out her shame. The whole “You can tell me. I’ll understand. I’m the only one who can” is him trying to get her to spill the beans so he can use it to get what he wants-the shame to be gone. Gwi-Ma had forced the shame onto Jinu, and probably all the demons, over and over again in order to prevent them from actually processing them and facing them, learning from their grievous mistakes and becoming better people. He throws the pain on them over and over and over and prevents them from even thinking that they are anything more than their worst mistakes. It forces Jinu to become like Gwi-Ma, a manipulative scumbag working only for himself. And Gwi-Ma wants Jinu to become worse and worse because Gwi-Ma knows that if he erases Jinu’s memories, Jinu will never become a better person and remain the kind of person who will betray their family for silk clothing and comfortable beds,

The moment that made Jinu realize there is actually a chance for him wasn’t any of the words Rimu said, it was the drawing by the child fan. The camera focuses on the word soul for a reason. He betrayed his sister, a young girl just like the fan that gave him the drawing. And yet someone just like her believes he can be more than his shame. From that moment on is when Jinu starts being genuine with Rimu and stops trying to manipulate her. It is a bit too late, but he doesn’t technically lie to her after this. And the more time he spends with her, the more he realizes there is more to him than the big-time fuck-up from 400 years ago, that he can stop being selfish. Hell, he doesn’t know it, but it was the first generation of hunters that saved his family after he fucked up. If you look at the mother and child in the intro, they’re the same and Jinu’s family.

And Gwi-Ma notices this and starts manipulating him with the memories. Drowning him in his regret until he becomes compliant. So he does the same to Rumi at the Idol Awards. And when she confronts him, he tells her everything while crying. But this isn’t what breaks Rumi, it’s her friends seeing her as nothing more than a demon because of Jinu’s actions. So she becomes like him, weak and compliant and ready to die. But the scene with Celine shows that something clicked in Rimu when Celine said that they should go back to hiding the marks. At this point, Rumi is exhausted of lies. She’s lied enough and has been lied to enough. And out of the two people who knew the truth and said that demons deserve to be in misery only one of them looked at her-Jinu. Both Jinu and Celine back-to-back shamed Rimu’s demon side, but only Jinu was able to look at her while saying that, because he was the only one who could take in both sides of her and see her as a person while simultaneously being forced to believe that they both deserve to drown in their shame.

It is only when Rumi comes back full-force saying “you know what, fuck you Gwi-Ma, I’m half demon and don’t have to feel pain forever and ever” that Jinu realizes that the mentality he has been fed for 400 years is wrong. And by breaking through Gwi-Ma’s manipulation he gets his soul back. That is why his sacrifice is so important. He has finally learned to be fully selfless and quite literally gives his everything to Rimu. I know why they didn’t kiss (as much as I would’ve loved them to), it’s because Jinu was not ready for that, like, at all. He had just learned to be selfless, a kiss would have made it seem like he did it just for romantic gratification. So unless she initiated the kiss, there would have been no point. But not animating a kiss is easier, I guess, and fulfilled the same purpose.

But the chattering of your teeth, and the shuddering shakes of your body underneath the covers, don't escape his notice.

"You're shivering," he murmurs, like he's cooing to some small stray on the street.

You don't stir. He creeps around the other side and carefully lowers himself onto your bed, far too soft for his tastes. Still, he lifts what little spare blanket he can and crawls in, aligning himself to your back as the cold air touches you, drawing out more shivers that have you curling further in on yourself.
