It took me way too long to listen to, but I didn't want it to be a DNF because come on. It's Wolverine. This is great for Halloween and if you're into body horror. There's just. so much. body horror.

So I'm working on reformatting the old books (modern covers, updated metadata) and accidentally discovered most of a first draft of another cowboy story I had completely forgotten about. I knew I'd thought about this story, but I didn't know I'd started it. Great job, past me!
#ask the author#nano this year will not be about writing one novel#it will be about finishing several novellas/novelettes#also it won't be on the nano website because there's some weird stuff going down there...#but that's what the freewrites are for#which reminds me i need to charge the yellow one

Every now and then I wake up with the craving to read something I've already written, and it's always a nice surprise.

Do you enjoy what you do for a living?
I really do. Both of my bosses are incredible guys who genuinely try to make the world a better place, and they care deeply about people. Both of them let me do things I'm good at--basically all the non-writing parts of writing. I can influence and take responsibility for things, but I don't have to lead or manage, which I knew I didn't want to do again. I get to spend my days solving problems and making things run smoothly, and every now and then, I get to perform minor miracles. I feel incredibly fortunate to have the day job that I have.
#ask the author#seriously i cannot say enough good things about being an EA#and i can't say enough good things about my bosses

What's your favorite way to spend a weekend?
The best way to spend Saturday night is with pizza and two rented movies.
The second best way to spend Saturday night is at the movies, but you have to be careful, because Saturday night is still date night.
These days I don't really like leaving my house (it's way too people-y out there) and I usually spend the weekends recovering from the required social interaction of my job. I like my job a lot. I love that it lets me work from home and do things I'm good at. But like 90% of my job is just customer service for the C-suite, and the older I get, the more introverted I get.
#ask the author#'rented' is used loosely here#the important thing is that they're movies i haven't seen yet#maybe i borrowed them from the library#maybe they're new to a streaming service#either way: lights off movie on sound up

Maybe the key is to just stop overthinking it. Think about it a little, enough for it to make sense, because fiction has to make sense, but don't think it to death. Feel more of it.

While helpful, this still doesn't do what I really want, which is for someone else to please name my characters so I don't have to.

It shouldn't, but it always surprises me how cathartic writing can be.
#ask the author#a new story opens with a fictionalized version of something that happened to me in real life#i didn't realize how much that moment bothered me until i decided it would be the perfect excuse for a meet cute#it was kind of a fucked-up thing to happen#but it's over now and it's helping the story so I'm rolling with it

What are you excited about right now?
I mentioned seeing Deadpool & Wolverine and feeling excited about movies again. Seeing it reminded me how much I enjoy comic book movies. I'm not sure it really got me excited about the MCU tie-in shows on Disney, but it definitely reminded me how much I like the X-Men movies.
Last week, I also used my writing sprints to outline some smutty short fiction. I've been eyes-deep in plotting longer fiction--novels and series--that I forgot how much I prefer shorter pieces--novelettes and novellas--both to write and to read. I'm not always excited about the commitment of a novel, but I'm almost always willing to give 20,000 words a try.
And despite the fact that I really enjoy my children as people and having them around during the summer, I'm excited for them to start school. Mostly because school means fall and fall means a break from this dumb heat and Halloween and sweater weather and all things pumpkin (like pie and soup and bread...). I'm so excited about the prospect of fall that I'm seriously considering throwing a Summerween to end our summer vacation.
