"ah, y/n, have you eaten yet today?" that soft, yet deep voice that always loved to bother you shot you awake from the moment your mind was about to doze off. followed by that same, familiar, and tantalizing chuckle, you finally brought your head up to meet the gaze of the young man who stood looking down at you from your desk. "oh, hi thoma," you shot him a warm smile.
little to your knowledge, lunch time had already began, and your teacher was just on her way out the door along with your other classmates who were eager to go to the cafeteria. "you okay? you've seemed out of it since this morning," thoma continued talking, making himself comfortable on the vacant seat besides you as he started to unpack his homemade lunch. you found this little thing of his weirdly adorable. not a lot of people still bring homemade meals to school in a neatly packed lunchbox like he does. "i'm just thinking about how i did on the tests yesterday," you muttered, plainly lying as you yourself have no idea what has gotten into you these past first periods.
thoma shakes his head a little, letting out another soft laugh as he continues to unpack his lunch. "you always say you don't study for the tests, yet you also seem to always come out on top." he reassures, as his hungry, glistening eyes aren't really on you anymore but on his food on your classmates table. you couldn't help but laugh a long a little, "honestly, even i don't know how i manage to still get good grades." you muttered, the aroma of thoma's delicious lunch filling your nostrils and almost the rest of the classroom. you didn't even realise that it was just the two of you left alone now, as almost everyone has went out to the cafeteria or to hang around the school premises.
as close as he seems to be right now with you, you couldn't really consider thoma a close friend. in reality, you know almost nothing about him. just the fact that you two have been classmates for two years now (back in 8th grade and now in your senior year), you both never really interacted. so it was weird that someone like him is suddenly taking note of your existence. "you need something?" you spoke as softly as you always do. "hm?” he muttered through a mouth filled with rice. you held back a small laugh at his plump cheeks and how.. cute you suddenly realised he is this close up. you didn’t realise that you were staring at him eating for a solid minute or two until he broke the silence with a small chuckle.
“aren’t you going to eat?” and with it came a charming little smile. “o-oh, actually yeah let me just..” you snapped out of it as quick as you could feel your cheeks heating up at the same time. reaching under your seat to grab your backpack, you took out the little snacks you had and placed it on your table.
“WHAT IS THIS??” startled by his sudden raise in voice, you jumped in your seat a bit as he stared at the wheat biscuits you got from home. “why? what’s wrong?” you replied. “this is no lunch, y/n!” he bickered, grabbing one of the packets in his large hands that looked like they could easily turn the biscuits into crumbs with one, gentle clench. you furrowed your eyebrows in a playful manner as his face turned into one of a playful disgust at your so called lunch. “h-hey! these are my favorite snacks, mind you! not everyone has the time to prepare a buffet!” you bickered back, motioning to his almost empty lunchbox with a smile you were desperately trying to hold back earlier.
“hm.. no wonder you’re out of it, you haven’t been eating as much as you should!” thoma exclaims like he’s made the discovery of the century. “thoma, i’m fine it’s just-“
“no, y/n. from tomorrow onwards, i’ll show you what a real lunch is.. by prepping you one of these!” he proudly showcases his lunchbox.
is this boy serious? you couldn’t help but laugh at his facial expressions, and you also couldn’t help the warm, fuzzy feeling building up inside of you the more you both had conversed the entire lunch time. before you knew it—and as much as you did not want it to end—the bell that indicated the break was over had rung, and almost immediately did you feel a huge part of the only reason you were able to smile this whole day, collapse.
thoma had already packed his finished lunchbox into a small bag he carries around with him to store it in as well. “oop, guess it’s time then,” he exclaims, taking a glance at his watch and gripping on to the handle of his bag at the same time. “yeah.. i guess it is,” you honestly didn’t know what to say. for the first time in such a long while, you had an enjoyable conversation with someone in school. and it was with someone you would have never thought even acknowledged your existence.
“don’t fear, y/n. and don’t think that i’ve forgotten!” he excitedly says but before you could reply, his attention had diverted from you to his friends who were calling to him in the classroom’s doorway. “thoma, come on.” a fair, tall, and blue haired male almost commanded the blonde with a tired expression. “are you always going to make me wait?”
“then go on without me, ayato.” thoma lightheartedly replies, causing the other to roll his eyes but with a hint of a small smile before disappearing into the crowd of other students making their way to their next subjects. before thoma had joined the flock though, he turned around to wave you goodbye with a gentle smile. however, just as you were about to do the same, he didn’t stick around long enough to even see you do it as he rushes to where he should be next. you find yourself smiling dumbfoundedly down at your table; your half but barely opened wheat biscuits started looking pathetic to even yourself.
“okay, lunch time is over students. clean up your desks and get your assignments ready to pass.”
... ... ...
before you knew it, the day was over and you were making your daily commute back home by yourself, as you always do. but this time, you didn’t hold that same grungy feeling inside of you. for once, you were excited to start another day. if it meant being able to talk and spend time with him again, then it’d be worth every second getting ready to go to school.
