The false Guinevere plot is interesting to me because I've got my own Guinevere carbon-copy but it's not a sister, it's a son.

For context, Eirian (birth name Loholt) is an accident baby. Guinevere thought she was sterile and so lived freely without the expectations of being a wife or mother until her father suddenly decides to marry her off to Arthur. Often when woman become mothers it becomes their only trait, they are ignored in favor of the baby. Guinevere thought she escaped that fate only to be struck with it in the face.

Eirian has her face, her beauty, inherited some of her powers, some her traits.

He's her, but as a man

And as a woman the "plot" demands you give yourself to support him

Eirian for his part knows his birth was an accident and doesn't know if his mother loves him or tolerates him. Right now they have a tentative friendship.

Ooh that sounds really interesting! And I LOVE stories about moms who don’t want to be moms in settings where they very much are expected to make their Son their entire being. Especially when it comes to Guinevere and the way the story already expects her be molded around other men (Arthur, Lancelot, even Mordred sometimes). So that sounds really cool!

Like what can you do when there is another you that the people around you deem as Better or More than you? They are a part of you but are also overtaking you and that must feel horrifying.

Also really fun you mentioned that little bit about the “plot” demanding things of Guinevere. I was thinking about the False Guinevere again and made this recent post and in the tags I have this like Guinevere story idea I’ll never write. Like the meta horror idea of “The Story” being alive. The idea of feeling the world around you change you and love and hate you in equal measure. And the question of how you can be yourself when you know you have and will change on a whim. I just love Guinevere and her relationship to her place in Arthuriana.

Thinkin about the False Guinevere incident again (likely thing for me to do) and just. God.

Just. The way Guinevere is being tormented and harmed and put through the wringer in the story and she doesn’t even get an apology. Because the story was never about her. It’s about Lancelot. It’s Lancelot whose emotional turmoil is given importance. Galehaut aids Guinevere for love of Lancelot. It’s Lancelot’s self-exile that Arthur mourns. And it’s Lancelot who is given an apology in the end, who must forgive and accept back Arthur for the story to wrap up. It’s Guinevere who’s the victim but Lancelot who’s treated as the wronged wife. (A win for Arthur/Lancelot but at what cost). The story of the False Guinevere isn’t about Guinevere.

But is it ever about Guinevere? She is always there. She has become such a key part of Arthuriana. But. Her marriage, her affair, her guilt, her cruelty, her kindness, her choices. It’s not about her. The story itself needs Guinevere, but never wants to actually have Guinevere. The story holds her close and hates her and loves her and never lets her go. And it’s still not about her.
