One of my least favorite things in fandom spaces is when people try to uplift one piece of queer media by bashing a different one.
I've seen people use The Owl House to shit on Steven Universe, I've seen people use both Warrior Nun and A League of Their Own to shit on Our Flag Means Death, I've seen people use Interview With the Vampire to shit on Hazbin Hotel and Helluva Boss, I've seen people use basically every other popular queer novel to shit on The Locked Tomb, and those are just examples off the top of my head. It happens with basically every new queer media, and it's been happening for as long as queer media has existed. I don't expect it to disappear any time soon, but it still makes me tired.
People act as if there's a set number of slots for queer art, and whatever fills those slots has to be the height of perfection or the artist has somehow betrayed "the community." The thing is, there is no singular "queer community," no queer art is ever going to speak to every single queer person in the world, and the answer to queer art you don't like is to go support the queer art you do like and let the art you don't like exist for the people who do.
Queer inclusion in mainstream media is always going to be a struggle and a source of disagreement. The answer is not to tear everything down, the answer is to go support the queer artists who are making the shit you'd like to see instead. Especially indies.
"This is bad rep! This is trashy! This is soulless! This is making us look bad! This is hurtful!"
Mm-hmm, yes, that's your opinion, but I have to ask: is it those things to literally every queer person, or just you? Because there is no queer person on this planet who can speak for all of us.
#the fact that this culture has been normalised#in AND outside of the context of fandom#and even outside of the context of queerness (gasp!)

no but I adoreeee the role reversal between kitty and puss when it comes to traditionally masculine/feminine roles in the last wish like idk if it was the same in pib 1 but the way kitty takes the lead when they’re dancing?? she’s his equal in strength not ‘weak cause she’s a woman’ or ‘so powerful her personality is overhauled so she can be a cardboard cutout Strong Woman’?? kitty isn’t left at the altar, she leaves of her own volition because she has a strong handle on what she’s worth and what she deserves?? puss gets to be vulnerable and feel afraid and need others help without it somehow being an attack on his masculinity or it detracting from his bravery?? kittys the one who catches puss in that romantic ass dip when he falls on the boat?? by god he even wears eyeliner. bi4bi girlboss/malewife fr

So like who else agrees with me that the sadist personality is just something the Wolf does for arrogant cheaters of death like Puss and when he usually claims lives he's more decent to the average person and kind to the people who die tragically?

i’ve been rereading moominland midwinter and i think the themes of parental acceptance went over my head the last few times i read it.
the way moomintroll constantly comes back to his parents’ room to either try to wake them up or to fall asleep like them. he lays on the floor by moominmamma, he decorates their room with the artwork of summer he finds laying around, he doesn’t stay quiet because he wants them to wake up so bad, but they don’t.
he’s alone in what he’s dealing with, his parents can’t understand and they can’t follow. he has to go through this on his own, which is so important to his character development.
(i also noticed tove dedicated the book to her mother, which made me tear up a bit).
