What: I saw a movie yesterday evening that was unlike anything that I have seen in a while. It was about a special band, in which the main leader of the band was wearing a very big- wobbly head. It is an absurd story about musical talent and mental disruption.
Why: I was amazed by the absurdity of the film, this is something that I do not see so often. I was often confused in a good way while I was watching the movie. In the end it turned out not to be only an absurd story line- it turned out to be about much more than that. It was inspirational to me because it made me realise that my work does not always have to be about reality; I should feel more free to ‘drift’ again more. To allow my fantasies in again.

What: This is the logo of a Dutch news podcast that I have started to listen to since this week. I listen to it now every time when I am in the public transport. You can easily download it on your iPhone and listen to it any time you like.
Why: Sometimes I feel like I should be more informed about the news. That is why I was glad when I found out about podcasts. I do not really like reading the newspaper- but I do enjoy listening to it. In half an hour I knew more about the conflict in Syria than ever before. I felt more engaged and made me eager to find out more about different situations in the world.

What: ‘Etui’ is an art project by an artist called Wim Delvoye.
Why: I like the fact that Delvoye is using the symbolic presentation of the ETUI to make the everyday item inside look more valuable. The casing reminds me of a music instrument. This paradox- between the modern and the classic, the refined and the mass production, makes a funny combination for me. I think the one with the watering can says most about this subject.
I notice that I start to be more and more interested in the PRESENTATION of the work and the presentation of everyday life. A different approach in presentation of something can change the whole perception and value of that ‘thing’.

What: The ‘Acne Studios’ store when I visited Antwerp.
Why: I was amazed by the beauty in the presentation of the clothing. There was a clear decision in the design of the store to create a certain ambiance. The clothes were all singles and the price tags gave me a hard time breathing.
Another fascination I had was with the people walking around in the store. The youngest children, accompanied by their mothers looked through the clothing like it is was an H&M store.
You could wonder why I am so amazed by rich people and expensive clothes- but I think it was a truly inspirational moment. I think that it would be extremely clever if you could recreate such an atmosphere in a shop where the clothes are affordable. The presentation of the clothing showed respect and care of the designer for the materials used.

What: This is a fashion film that has been made in Africa by the Nigerian stylist, photographer and art director Daniel Obasi. He saw a void in the news when it concerns the positive future of Africa. He made a fashion film which shows his vision on the future of his country. It is called ‘An Alien in Town’
Why: When I saw the movie I did not know the context. I felt something but it was hard to comprehend what it was. I really felt for the blue protagonist- it seemed to be an outsider who did not really understand what was going on. When I looked up the meaning of the film, I found out that the blue protagonist symbolises the foreigner who does not understand Africa. It all suddenly made sense to me. I am completely surprised by how wrong the title of the article on VICE was.

What: This ‘instagram artist’ called Yuyi John is a name to keep an eye on. While she spends a lot of time on instagram looking at everyday posts, she is looking at it with a critical look. She makes art out of what she sees online. In this photo series she works with temporary tattoos on people’s faces, to illustrate the self centert quest for identity in this mass culture on social media. In this particular photo she shows the influence of Japanese culture in Taiwan.
Why: I like this work because I also like to work with topics like this myself. I like how this girl talks about such relatable and modern subjects and how she does it. She uses instagram itself to distribute her art, and she uses usb cables are shoe laces. I love the way that she combines MAKING with DOCUMENTING.

What: I have been looking at a documentary called ‘Hot girls wanted - Turned On’. This is a documentary on Netflix about all kinds of different aspects of the porn industry. In episode 1, female directors are discussed. One of the main characters is Erika Lust, she is a female ‘adult film maker’.
As her website says: “Female provocateur and erotic film director Erika Lust is creating a new world of indie adult cinema.”
Why: I have been interested in the porn industry for some time now; mainly my interest goes out to the women involved in the industry. I wonder what is fake and what is real sometimes. It worries me that such young girls get involved. I really like the cinematographic, professional approach that Erika Lust has on porn- she is not directing the sex in her films. She is looking for a new erotic ‘angle’; which I think is interesting. People can start to see her porn as a form of art; art critics visit her premieres in the cinema. When you start thinking about it... why not?

What: I was reading the Volkskrant when I came across this American photographer, Medina Dugger- she is based in Africa.
From her website: “Medina Dugger is a photographer from california, based in Lagos Nigeria”
Why: The outlook of these photo’s were able to appeal to me right away. I have been doing research about aesthetics for some time now. First I was only interested in concept- but now I start to explore the immense impact of the visual outlook, it enables to make your concept stronger.

What: Lately I have been looking into the brand “ OFF - WHITE “. I am interested in their approach on fashion, branding and graphic design.
Why: One thing has been frustrating me since I get to know the brand. They label their clothing with names of the items on it. For example; on their shoe laces their print ‘SHOE LACE’ and on their website is ‘WEBSITE’. This made me wonder; why state the obvious? Why aren’t their looking for the rule from Johan: 1+1=3?

During the first weekend of the break- I visited the city of Antwerp. I needed to get away for a bit. After my return I felt inspired to start again with my Tumblr. One of the things I saw in Antwerp was the ‘Nationale straat’; a wonderful street full of avant garde fashion shops. A lot of big brands also have shops in this street; like Issey Miyake. I was fascinated by their display. The colours they were using are so bold and I absolutely love the way that they combine the clothing with the prints hanging from the wall. This created an overall feeling and styling in the shop. A shame that I could not find the door to enter the shop and look a round a bit more.

What: This is a documentary fashion icon Iris Apfel from legendary documentary filmmaker Albert Maysles. This is a woman of age, living in New York. She is a big inspiration to many people in fashion. People believe that she does not follow trends, the trends follow her. She could be called a living run way.
Why: I have seen this documentary some time ago but yesterday I decided to watch it again after an interesting discussion with my father. He bought a table for me in black. I really like the look of it; but I wondered if black would fit in my room since most of my room is white. He told me to ask myself if I am eclectic or not. I decided that I am and decided to keep the black table. I had to look at this documentary again since Iris is the ultimate example of a real ‘eclectica’. ( This word I invented with my father = female believer of eclecticism)

What: The documentary about the visual artist Jean Michel Basquiat called ‘The Radiant Child’. I have looked at it one week ago and it has left me obsessed ever since.
Why: I knew the work from Basquiat a bit before. I got to know him in my previous school. We had to make a ‘masterpiece’ of 2 x 2,5 meter big and people told me that my rough approach reminded them of him. I do not see the resemblance in the way the work looks (if only)! But I do see the way in which he could spend an afternoon - listening to jazz, smoking some fags and pasting layers on layers on layers of paint. Isn’t that just the dream? Actually MAKING instead of fucking writing Research & Discourse papers and keeping your Tumblr page updated.

What: This is an article about the people who live in trailers in the Netherlands. The article discusses the difficulties that these people experience nowadays, thanks to new rules by the government. Youngsters want to move out of their parents houses - but they can not start to live on their own since there are not enough places to live in such a house. The new rules of the government only permit a few new ‘standing places’ each year, since they wanted to motivate people to start living in normal houses. After a few years of this new arrangement; problems start to occur. People who grew up in trailers do not want to change - therefore they stay in caravans in the gardens of the houses belonging to their parents. This results in conflict and revolt.
Why: I had never experienced the environment of a trailer park until recently. I had to go there because I had to pick someone up for his drivers license class there. I was interested in the way that this boy looked, talked and behaved. I noticed that a real sub culture must have existed in the small trailer park where he was from. I would like to meet this boy again to talk and may be photograph him.

What: Russian Posters of the Constructivism era
Why: My family has an annual Christmas dinner. Everybody always contributes. And since I am not a good cook, I offered to make the menu. The theme of the dinner was Russia - so I looked into some Russian graphic designers / artists like Malevich. There was a clear theme which I could follow; but I felt that I needed to make it more personal. That is why I researched the theory on graphic design in Russia, and I found a lovely article of the New York Film Academy , describing the cliché’s in this kind of design. I wondered if I should bother about all these comments they had- since my family does not really know anyway I suppose. But anyway, I took the task seriously and I would have to find my own way to spice it up a bit. That is why I included a piano and the barcode of the bottle of Vodka that we drank that evening. (And of course the mystery red circle again!) ...

What: Article: “German Artist Creates Miniature Scenes With A Darkly Satirical Twist”. Although the quality of the articles of Bored Panda are not the highest quality; sometimes there is some nice artist to discover there. Today I found a photographer who makes miniatures to tell a sinister story.
Why: I liked the way that this photographer does his own set design. He claims to really spend weeks; months on building this kind of scenes. It made me think of the project that Femke is doing for Image Development, the 24 project. I think this kind of work would not be for me; I think I prefer working in life size. Of course- that would be a huge production, so may be that is also not for me. I miss the impulsive moment in this work.

What: Yesterday evening, the friends of my brother all of the sudden showed me a YouTube clip of 20 minutes. In it, is the entire history of the world. This may sound ridiculous, but after seeing it you might understand why it is such a good summarisation. The speed of the clip is extremely high and the orientation of the information is not Western. The narrator discusses the timeline of the earth in an informal way.
Why: I liked the way in which the narrator gave an overview of the ‘history of the earth’. It might have been super roughly done, but still I was interested by the way he was able to talk about the big chain reaction that we are in. One thing happens- which leads to another. I think it would be great to have a similar clip about the art world.

What: VIDEOCLIP
Jorja Smith X Preditah - On My Mind
Director: Hector Docktrill
Why: I was reading some articles on Vice.com, when I ran into an article about a British vocalist called Jorja Smith. I was looking at her videoclips and I was pleasently surprised by the hip visuals of them. That is why I looked up the director; Hector Docktrill. I quite like some other work of him, just like “HELL - Jordan Max” , because of the dark atmosphere he uses in there. It fits the raw voice of the vocalist well.
