STORYBOARD RESERACH
For both my visual language module and my sound design and editing module story boarding is a key part in my animation preparation process.
I found this YouTube video by Micah Buzan called ‘How to storyboard for animation (part 1)’ whilst conducting research and I found it very useful to get a refresh of the very basics of storyboarding and also to get a deeper sense of the animation process for longer and bigger animation productions. I will use the tips from the video to help me formulate ideas on how to structure my storyboards not just for my current projects but also for any future projects too.

ARTIST RESEARCH - DAVID DOWNTON
Downton is a fashion illustrator that has been sketching for the runways for over a decade and for designer brands such as Dior, Estée Lauder and Chanel and first got into the fashion industry in 1996 as he was commissioned to draw at Paris couture by a Sunday supplement.
The use of colour that Downton uses is interesting to me because the minimalistic and basic colour combinations that he uses such as red, black and white to highlight a key part of the outfit he’s designing and the use of watercolours and pastels create the textures of the colour based for my storyboard and animation, especially for the night scenes where I will be using negative space/inverted colours.

ARTIST RESEARCH - WILHELM M BUSCH
Busch was a wartime illustrator that did freelance illustrations and observational drawings of pub and bar culture in the 20’s and 30’s and illustrated over 300 books in his time.
The art style that Busch uses and the use of the medium ink that he uses resembles the style of line art that I want to take into my final storyboards and animation. The ambiguity of the line work and how they form the basic shapes of human anatomy but they still give the illustrations character and movement, which will be useful in this module since the animation will be sound based rather than visual based.

RESEARCH - HE SEEMED LOVELY
This 2 minute short film on vimeo made by Marie-Margaux Tsakiri-Scanatovits as her graduation film caught my eye as the themes of the film are about girls in the toilets talking about sex and relationships on a night out, which is the same if not a very similar direction that I want to take my animation as I am basing my animation off ‘Ernest cafe bar’ in Ouseburn.
The drawing style in ‘He seemed lovely’ suits the art style that I want to use in my animation as a ‘loose’ and ‘sketchy’ drawing style would not just be appropriate for this module brief but also to represent how the character is trying to remember the night from memory rather than narrating within the moment as it’s happening to them in real time.

ADOBE AUDITION EXERCISE
In today’s session I was introduced to the software ‘Adobe Audition’ to edit our sound clips that we had previously collected from Ouseburn, the university library and sound clips that were provided for us specifically for this session.
My first impressions of Audition is that I find this software hard to use, especially since this is the first time that I have edited sound for any type of work but I believe that I can get the hang of it as I use it more to edit the sounds for my animation.

ARTIST RESEARCH - FISH NEVER SLEEP
Another animation that inspires me for this module is ‘Fish never sleep’ by Gaëlle Dennis. The animation tells the story of a Japanese woman who cannot sleep and tells the story of why she cannot sleep until one night she goes out for a ride on her motorcycle and goes off the bridge and drowns. The use of narration that the video has is a quality that I want to use within my animation about Ernest in Ouseburn, especially as I want my animation to be a character describing a night out they went on the night before to her friends whilst having brunch in the morning.
The use of location in the animation is also interesting to me as they were animated from original sketchbooks Dennis made and kept. The use of colour that Dennis uses throughout the animation as a whole created a loose but almost chaotic atmosphere as it clearly reflected the lack of control that the character was feeling over her sleep patterns.
I also noticed that the sound effects in the video were are prominent theme and the sounds of the machines in the fish factory gave the animation the ‘routine’ type of lifestyle of doing the same morbid thing day in day out for the factory workers up until the dead character winds up on the escalator and the workers don’t know any better than to look at each other and still chop her into pieces like the rest of the fish. Other sound effects such as the bubbling water, the busy traffic and the crowds of people also made the animation diverse and created tension between the outside world and the character’s mind.

ARTIST RESEARCH - ‘TRAVELOUGE TEL AVIV TRAILER 2′
In class we looked at a few example animations that my lecturers had attached to the PowerPoint presentation and one of the animations that they showed us was ‘Travelouge Tel Aviv Trailer 2′ by Samuel Patthey.
The animation is based off sketchbook drawings that Samuel made during his exchange semester in Tel Aviv, Israel in 2016 for his final graduation film. I find this way of animating very interesting as it gives the animation a sketchy, but characteristic feeling to it, the amount of different textures that Patthey uses translates well from the original sketches to the animation. The use of collage, pastels, watercolour paints, pens and pencils create the simple effects that I want achieve in my final animatic.
In terms of the sounds that were used in the animation, the diverse range of sounds from the street noises to the party music gives me a lot of ideas about how I could plan out and execute my animatic, especially since I have been researching on the nightlife of Ouseburn.
