Final Video + Changes from Beginning to End
As I was putting objects into my world, I decided not to use my initial plan for my zones as I found it difficult to make them flow naturally into each other. Therefore, I designed the camera path to travel in a curvy C shape that went from top to bottom and back to the top again before exiting through the Midsommar-inspired building. This way it was much easier to have a coherent and natural flow to the world.

Adding Sound
I wanted to keep my 3D world's sound simple and peaceful so I tried not to overcrowd it with different sounds. I added sounds from an ocean, a river, a bird song, and a song called 'Ghost Duet' which I found suited the atmosphere well.
I found once my world is rendered, there is an issue with a fade being added to some frames and that it is only rendered properly from university computers. However, I have returned home and have been using my personal laptop to complete my work and have not been able to resolve this issue. I tried using the pc we have at home to see if the issue went away and it does not. It does not occur for a long time but is frustrating to see as everything has worked out fairly well and it resolves itself by the end of the video.

3D Objects
I wanted to have quite a bid of natural objects in my world so to achieve this I used bush/tree pngs found online and used these as textures on flat planes. I first tried to make a large tree but found the amount of leaves involved caused the entire world to lag very badly and so I decided on a different way of achieving this.
Tumblr media
I used flat planes with a png texture to make the bushes but in order to have them render properly in Arnold, I had to invert them in Photoshop so that they had a black background and the bush was white so Maya knew what to show in the render view. I then duplicated them to intersect a few times so that the image wasn't completely flat in the landscape.

Lighting
To add lighting to my world, I applied a sky dome and using a a texture from HDRI Haven called Sunflower, I reversed the sky dome so that the texture would apply to the inside and light the scene.

3D Objects
I included some of the art I have done in the past in my moodboard and struggled to find a way to include this in my 3D world for the first while, but I decided in the end to create a mini-gallery for some of my art I really like and am proud of. To do this I used flat plains for the canvases and glass panes, with a torus shape for the frame. At first I applied the wood texture, however in Arnold this will not render so I changed each to darker shades of brown once imported into my 3D world and found this looked more or less the same.

3D Objects
I wanted to incorporate some of my hobbies into my 3D world and in my moodboard I included crochet materials. I based my landscape base off of the Irish countryside I grew up around which consists of fields divided into squares such as this:
Tumblr media
I thought it would be interesting to combine these into one object in Maya and I was very happy with the result. I first downloaded a crochet texture and in Photoshop changed the colour attributes until I was happy with their natural look. In Maya I applied this as a texture to my landscape.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Port, which my landscape is based off of, has its fields divided by long lines of rock walls and so to do this I made a base wall and duplicated this over the divides in the crochet field texture to resemble Port.

For the rock texture, I used textures found on 3D sculpting websites as the rock texture in Maya didn't look great. I then edited these to each of the rocks in UV editor to ensure it looked as natural as possible, alternating between 3/4 different rock textures so that there would be a good variety and therefore natural appearance.

3D Progress
I want to use some inspiration from films I love and in my mood board I included a few things from Beetlejuice which led me to creating the sand worm as an asset for my world. It wasn't too difficult as I used only 4 shapes (cylinders, cones, circles and rings) and the sculpt tool to make the shapes, although the head was quite hard to get right when creating the blue ring around the mouths.

I have created a fairly simplistic drum kit for my world as for 4/5 years I played drums and once in a while returned to the instrument. I used very simple shapes for the bass drum, snare, and toms, mostly consisting of cylinders changed to a variety of shapes, sizes, and materials. I found it difficult to get a proper metallic look on the metal of each part but tried my best by increasing the cosine power and specular color in their attributes panel.
At first, I imported the crash as a basic gold colour but found it looked out of place and too simple so later added the Dark Crash texture and used the sculpting tools to create dents all around the cymbal so that it appeared as realistic as possible.
I think I could find a way to make the metal on the parts more reflective and closer in resemblance to real metal and this way it would look more whole as a drumkit as the crash cymbal is much more textured than the other pieces.

I want to reference different films I love in my world of delights as films are something I love very much and have found to inspire a lot of my art both in the past and presently still. I have designed the maypole which the characters in Midsommar dance around and found that placing a flower texture on the shapes was more effective than making individual flowers as with too many leaves and petals my Maya would slow down a lot of glitch very often.

3D World Moodboard & Map
Tumblr media
In my moodboard for my 3D map I have included a lot of different influences that I have in my life and which I often use in my art or projects, both in and outside of university. I looked mostly at art references for this but also used landscapes I love, musical influences and some film screen caps also.
I did not want my moodboard to be dull or too morbid and so I tried to make it quite colourful and lively. I also included some textures which I intend to use in my 3D world, those being crochet patterns found in the bottom left hand corner.
I used greek art to refer to my love of Hozier, who often uses greek myths in his songs as metaphors, and also to books I have read and loved such as The Song of Achilles and Circe, both by Madeline Miller.
In terms of landscape, I intend for my 3D world to appear as if you are driving along the coast of Wild Atlantic Way and that all these 'delights' will run along it, for example as formations in the landscapes (like how the Appennine Colossus is built into a mountain) or textures in it.
I would like to organise these zones by periods in my life, e.g. film influences like Beetlejuice would appear earlier as part of childhood whereas later influences like Midsommar would appear in the middle or final zone.

3D Room Development
In Maya, we have been creating a room of our choice. I've chosen to recreate my current room in my flat. I find so far that Maya is understandable and manageable, however as we have begun more complex things like adding texture, I have struggled at first.
This is the development of my room so far:
Tumblr media
Since this, I have added a few more objects as well as textures and FX.
