Ronit and Esti: Perfect Inverses

Ronit is a great study in contrast. So disobedient on the outside, yet so vulnerable on the inside. Through Rachel Weisz’s performance, we can surmise that Ronit was always an outsider, and not always by choice. Her curse is her inability to pretend. She left Hendon because it felt like the only choice she could make. She didn’t know how to stay and make that place a home for herself. But New York isn’t quite home, either. There, she’s stripped of her origins - which can be liberating, but is also incomplete. So: Beneath all her courage, Ronit is a wanderer, longing to find home somewhere. And Esti is the only place that was ever truly home for her.

Ronit is a perfect complement to Esti, who is so obedient on the outside, yet so resilient on the inside. It takes an unwavering spirit to love someone for as long as Esti has loved Ronit. Unlike Ronit, Esti only feels like an outsider, but she is more able to “pass” as an insider. If Ronit’s curse is that she can’t pretend to belong, Esti’s curse is that she can. She’s good at pretending, so much so that she nearly disappears into her own performance. Except that deep within her, in a place that no one can take away from her, she harbors a devoted and unparalleled love. So: Beneath all her compliance, Esti is a beacon, longing to bring her wanderer - Ronit - home.

I really loved this film. And the thing I enjoyed most was how Ronit and Esti were so exactly molded to each other. They were, as Sebastian Lelio says, the perfect inverses of each other. And it was exhilarating to watch the outwardly careful Esti take the lead in their relationship, while the outwardly careless Ronit watches and waits for Esti to make the next move. It feels true to life, that couples often appear one way in public only to have a very different dynamic in private. You would think that Ronit is the “bad girl”, but with Esti, she is so tender and patient and loving. With Esti, she waits. For Esti, she is willing to obey by leaving - not because it’s easy, but because it would absolve Esti of having to make any choice. You would think that Esti is the “good girl”, but with Ronit, she is so brave and honest and confident. With Ronit, she moves. For Ronit, she is willing to disobey by asking for her freedom - not because she doesn’t know how to pretend, but because it would be unbearable to choose a life that excludes Ronit.

For those that think the film’s ending was sad or even ambiguous: I disagree. Change will take time, of course. But how could these two women choose anything but each other? I think the film doesn’t give us easy answers for how they will eventually come together. But there is no question in my mind that theirs is the love of a lifetime, one for which they are each willing and able to transform. And those last scenes tell us that Esti is taking her first steps toward transformation by seeking freedom from her community, while Ronit is taking her first steps toward transformation by seeking closure with her father. They no longer need to live within their scripted roles of “obeying” and “disobeying” - they can simply be. And for two people that have worked so hard to finally and simply be, why would they not choose to be with each other?
