I love that Revenged Love never lets us forget that the entire plot revolves around a custody battle over a bunch of snakes. The show started with Chi Cheng losing custody of his kids and the long journey to try and regain custodial rights. Now we’re over halfway through the series and the evil birth father is back in the picture with partial custody of Little Vinegar. But let’s be honest: Wu Suowei isn’t just the stepdad: he’s the dad who stepped up.

Can’t wait to see what happens next on Paternity Court: Snake Edition.

Well, I finally watched the TNP finale and found it as largely forgettable as the rest of the show :/

I knew they were not gonna properly deal with what they had set up between Ramil and Paytai in the last episode, but I didn’t think it would be this much of an afterthought. If they were gonna resolve it so quickly and with almost no build up, it would’ve been so much more interesting (and dramatic!) to have Ramil’s breaking point be refusing to step on Paytai rather than losing Paytai.

This reunion didn’t feel earned. We could’ve seen Ramil go through it. Losing his mind with grief and with missing Paytai. We could’ve seen Paytai missing Ramil and struggling to stay away because his love for him didn’t just disappear. It’s not like they ran out of time, the finale was 1h30 and included a bunch of filler. We didn’t need the “Charan can’t say he loves Khanin because apparently dicking him down is ok but the L word is inappropriate” fake out. I personally did not need a 20 minute nc followed by a 10 minute kiss scene. That time could’ve been used to properly tie together the Ramil/Paytai storyline and to give queen of our hearts Ava more screentime. She looked SO HOT in that pink outfit, lounging on the couch! That was the time to have Mira swoop in and kiss her! Show us that they’ve secretly been together this whole time! Come on now!

Shocked and delighted by how complex (and so very queer) Revenged Love is allowing its characters and relationships to be. “This person is my friend and I love and care about them deeply. I’m also very attracted to them, and maybe I fantasize about them, and maybe not just in a sexual way, maybe also in a romantic way, but maybe I like the fantasy more than the possible reality, and maybe I want to keep this tension between us, because the tension itself is so sweetly delicious.” Put that in a blender and let me drink it like a smoothie.

The arm around the neck, reaching over and holding his wrist. The other arm gently holding the same wrist. The aching intimacy of it all. The way he kisses him, just for a second, but then keeps his face close and his eyes locked on him, waiting. Ready for more. The way GCY moves forward ever so slightly, like he’s about to kiss him back but then stops himself because he knows the moment he does it’s not a joke anymore.

The thing is that a lot of people are consuming BL basically as a substitute for softcore porn and they watch so many of the “nc scenes with a sliver of a plot” ones that they start to think that anything that doesn’t show someone’s whole ass is censored. Baby, it’s not censored; it’s a tv show. If you just want to watch people go at it, pay for an OF subscription or something.

Revenged Love and Desire really are pulling a crowd that either is too young or simply have never come into contact with the chinese branch of BL-land:

I just saw a big-numbers tweet complaining about the chinese streaming services pulling Desire out of the catalogues, with so many people being genuinely shocked by the move and to boot I had to read "the homophobes are winning in China 😭"

A few more thoughts about Ramil/Paytai because that scene is seared into my brain:

Yes, Rachata would’ve certainly beaten Paytai if Ramil had refused to step on him.

But Paytai knows Rachata’s violence, he knows the extent of his wrath and power. He has been physically abused by Rachata over and over as a way of punishing Ramil. And he has shown that he can live with that.

But this was different. This was not about punishing Ramil. This was about dehumanizing Paytai. It was about reminding him that he’s nothing. That he is—quite literally—beneath Ramil.

And when Ramil stepped on him, he participated in his dehumanization. That was the line for Paytai. Yes, Ramil was trying to prevent more physical harm from being inflicted on Paytai, but Paytai would’ve taken the physical violence over having the man he loves participate in his humiliation. I think that’s the chasm between them in that scene. Ramil tries to kiss him after Rachata leaves because, even though he’s horrified by what he’s just done, he thinks by doing so he avoided the worst. But to Paytai, that was the worst that could happen.

(Also, Ramil is still a victim. You can be both a victim and a perpetrator.)
