I started off typing this in the replies but then I realized it would probably take like 4 comments to finish my essay because of the word limit so here’s another reblog on my “Not Gonna Reblog Here” account

oughhh i have so so many ideas about maelle ending. i would never pick it but i spend too much time thinking about it for my own good. I imagine she either erased their memories of her being literally god, or they took it better than we think they might(considering Lune and Sciel were super casual about it, thinking of her as “the Maelle we know as love, but also a paintress”)

Assuming they know her to be a paintress, I have to wonder if she either lied to them, hid something from them, or completely altered their thinking to have them comply with what she wanted them to think.

What i mean is, we know she can force people to do things as seen with Verso, and considering she is literally repainting Gustave, Sciel, and Lune, who is to say she can’t bring them back with a few… tweaks..? I say this because I doubt Gustave would happily comply with her idea of the world given she was a) literally an all-powerful god with more power than she knew what to do with and b) Verso’s soul had to suffer eternally for this world to continue. If Gustave knew either of those things its likely he wouldn’t have been entirely on her side, but from the ending when we see him, we can tell hes perfectly content with the arrangement.

I just love the idea that she altered either his memories, or literally changed his idea of what he wanted so that he agreed with her no matter what. Not only that, but the implications of what might happen to the very concept of death. Maellicia has seen so much loss and death in her life that one can easily imagine, with the power to do so, she’d extent the lifespan of those she loved just so she’d never feel their loss again. Assuming again, that she will remain alive in the canvas for at least a hundred years(because Aline was implied to have spent around that much time in the canvas and she still had a bit of time left before the canvas killed her) This would greatly exceed the lifespan of say, Gustave, Lune, and Sciel.

Given that she Literally Makes a Replacement for Verso after she decides to take his immortality and let him die of old age(Side note: I saw someone say they think the fact that it’s black and white around Verso is meant to imply that Maellicia stopped time, as if to extend his life in spite of taking his immortality, forcing him to play in her bubble, a picturesque scene inside her picturesque world and just…. hrhrgegeh i know it’s a bit of a stretch but I just love the idea)

Anyway seeing her little replacement for Verso, it’s clear that in spite of saying she’d let him die, she was never planning to let him go from her end. Sure, Verso can die, Verso can leave her, but she. will. not. leave. Verso. And if Verso is unhappy being with her, and she can’t paint over him to her liking, she can always do the next best thing and make a new one from scratch.

That is truly my favorite part of her ending because it really drives home the fact that everything is real, and so nothing is real. The entire canvas becomes Maelle’s playplace, a fantasy realm where anything she says goes, anything she wishes, happens, and the very identity of “Verso’s Canvas” is completely gone, replaced with whatever Maelle has done to it. It’s worse still, because she claims this is her home, “her life now.” It might be different if she saw the canvas the way Verso and Clea did, a place to adventure, to do as they pleased. But to her, this is the entire world now. And to change every single person in the world to fit what you want SOUNDS insane, but to a 16 year old girl with more grief in her heart than any person could take, it’s almost justified.

Alright I got wayy sidetracked but back to the point, we’ve established that Maelle is perfectly content with making replacements of her dead or, hell, even alive loved ones. Who is to say she’d ever let them die, at least as long as she lived? And if she did extend their lifespan, would she only do it for the people she loves? Or would she extend her abilities to all of Lumiere?

Seeing that she doesn’t bring back Julie(possibly due to Verso not wanting her back, being that he was en route to die in a world he never wanted to exist in. regardless, it’s doubtful Maelle asked him if he wanted anyone back anyway, as she knew he’d be dead. What did it matter if Julie was back when Replacement Verso didn’t care about her?) It’s possible she’d only bother extending the lifespans of those around her, just enough to keep her fantasy alive. If so, what would the other Lumeriens think? Would they think of her as an unjust god? Would she paint over their negative ideas of her? Do they even see her as a god?

And if she does extend everyones lifespans, or rather, make them entirely immortal, what happens after she dies?

I especially love to think of what becomes of the people of Lumiere after the canvas has taken her life. The people who have likely now become dependent on their all powerful god, used to never dying, accustomed to their newfound existence. How might they adjust back to a normal life? That is, if they even had the chance to see it.

See, I think Maellicia was lying when she said “Renoir will destroy the canvas if I leave.” Lying to Verso, Sciel, Lune. And worst of all, lying to herself. She wanted to believe she couldn’t leave because the idea of her pained existence was too much to bear. And maybe the risk of Renoir destroying the only thing she cared about anymore wasn’t worth not dying in her fantasy realm. Regardless, I doubt Renoir would have destroyed it had she kept her promise and left it. Maybe she could have even come back a few times, not for very long, but enough that she wouldn’t leave Lumiere forever. Of course, Verso’s soul would continue to suffer, as would painted! Verso.

But she decided to stay. And when she dies, it’s impossible to see a world where Renoir doesn’t destroy the canvas. Maybe he’d even come back and try to save her, like he did Aline. Maybe he’d lose this time, and she’d die anyway. After all, Verso can’t help this time.

Should she die, what happens to the canvas is in Renoirs hands. Infuriated, tired, scarred hands. The canvas never stood a chance, no matter the ending.

Maelles ending has a near infinite amount of possibilities, and yet… none of them can ever have a happy conclusion. Most doomed girl of the century actually i need to attack her(affectionate)

Also! Clea.

Clea, who loses her brother to a tragic fire.

Clea, who loses her sister to a tragic fire.

Clea, who loses her mother to a tragic fire.

Clea, who loses her father to a tragic fire.

She remains grounded in reality in spite of herself, makes an effort to understand Alicia though her voice is almost entirely gone, hell she even partakes in Aline and Renoirs fight because she needs her family back and if it takes entering their fantasy realm and forcing their hand then she’ll try it. She never objects to the loss of the canvas, though it is fundamentally hers. Verso’s, and hers. “The four of them going on adventures… And nothing else.” Esquie remarks. She never objects because she needs her parents back, and she can’t afford to stop and think about the pain, her feelings, her emotions. Everything must be bottled as her mind steers towards one single cause.

It doesn’t even matter at the end, if she succeeds or fails. Because winning her war against the writers won’t bring Verso back. She knows this, and she’s prepared for this. What I doubt is that she was prepared to find her sister trapped in the canvas of her own will, in the same position her mother was in. Would she blame herself if Alicia died? For letting her go in? For not trying to save her? Or would she believe Alicia brought it upon herself?

Anyway I’m way off topic now but I just love talking about a life to paint because it’s such a huge mess with so many possibilities and all of them doom the Dessendres and Lumiere no matter how much they get romanticized and I think thats wonderful.

Guys, I know the majority of you picked the Verso ending, but what do y'all think would be a post-maelle ending like in the Canvas? Did she paint over a new reality where the Gommage never existed, or did she keep the history, and everything the characters went through? If she did, how would Lumière react to this new goddess who brought them back from that mass-gommage? How would Gustave react to being brought back, and finding out his adopted sister-daughter is god?

If they didn't, if Alicia erased the adventure, would that make the characters not the characters we know and love?

Would any of them notice the suffering of that one piano guy? Would any of them do anything about it?

Please! Gimme your headcanons, people, if you have any! I'm dying to talk about this.

ilove him soooo much….. hes like a chew toy to me.

like he spends the WHOLE game making you think hes this cool, likable, charming guy who has everything together. its verso, the mysterious but still trustworthy guy. the guy who helps you stay on track with your mission just because he wants to help. the guy who cuts himself in half because he wants to cheer you up. the guy whos best friend is the most powerful being in your world. and maybe you dont know everything about him, but no matter how you look at him he seems like a good guy. hes doing this for the greater good. hes doing this for your world. hes doing this to help you.

but hes not.

hes not even CLOSE to that idea.

he swooped in to save you after your brother died, right?(but he let him die for his own gain.)

he’s helping you defeat the evil thats destroying your world, right?(but he keeps from you that she’s not the evil you seek to destroy)

hes helping you kill the man who massacred your team, right?(but he doesnt tell you that man is his father.)(and he doesn’t tell you to kill him.)(only to incapacitate.)

he is so. so. so selfish. so self centered. a liar for what is fundamentally only his own gain. argue as much as youd like that it’s for his family but he’s letting an entire world suffer and die for his. own. gain.

and i LOVE him for it. i love how absolutely selfish he is. i love that you spend this entire game watching him develop relationships with the other characters just to find out that everything he has ever done has been a lie to save his own skin. he doesnt even tell them esqiue can fly because he cant afford them trying to leave when hes so, so close.

and god at the end when everyone is trying to convince renoir that the canvas shouldn’t be destroyed, that there’s a compromise to be found… he just stays silent. not a defiant silence but a complete vacuum for any argument, anything he could possibly say and you can just see in his eyes that he does not know, at all, what he wants.

im putting this horribly but just god that final scene where he looks around so lost, so confused just absolutely kills me. like his whole life has been a constant battle trying to figure out whats right, what he wants, what he should be doing. he goes years and years fighting on painted!renoirs side before he decides to fight against him and get aline out of the painting but now that she’s gone, what is there? what else can he do?

and its less his final decision that makes his character for me and more his complete and utter confusion. like no decision he makes will be correct and still he must make a decision. and ultimately he makes a selfish one. and maelle makes a selfish one. because that is just who they are, that is how humans are, and neither can be blamed for a moment.

does any of this make sense at ALL im literally just yapping don’t pay any heed to this i just wanted to get the words out of my chest i lovke verso so mcuh i need to kill him with my bare hands. i need to dissect him

like genuinely at what point in the development did they decide yeah no we need a bisexual man with huge princess eyes and the sadness of an abandoned puppy. there was just no reason to make him so violently sad and lame and pathetic but they did and im so glad they did
