Are We Packed Yet?
My husband, Jason, and I are getting ready to go on a trip for a week. We leave in two days. Yes, 2 days. I have come to realize we have completely different ways of getting ready for a trip.
I am a planner. I hate waiting until the last minute to figure stuff out. I have worked on a packing list for about 2 weeks now. I have a basic to pack list, an outfit list so I know what clothes to pack, a shopping list because I knew we would need things for the trip, and a to do around the house list. I started rough packing my stuff this past weekend. Still late for me. What is rough packing? It is the same thing as a rough draft for a paper. I throw clothes into the suitcase that I think I am going to want to take but its not actually packed and ready to go. I am planning to do my final packing done by tonight after we do the last load of laundry from clothes we wore this week. I also have to wait until Jason gets his uniform back from the cleaners before I can really pack and be done with everything. It is supposed to be done today, hopefully it is and hopefully he picks it up today.
Now Jason, he likes to wait until the last minute to do things. He doesn’t even know what he is bringing with him. He hasn’t even started rough packing. He is the type that just does the final packing and hopes he has everything. Drives me insane at times. I’ve tried to get him to rough pack, or start thinking of what hes taking. All he knows for sure is that he’s taking his uniform. Like, what else are you taking? I know, guys can pack so much easier than girls can, but it is still stressful when he doesn’t even start until 2 nights before.
Of course, he took care of his clothes and shoes. Everything else, including gifts for his family, personal hygiene stuff, I am in charge of packing. Hopefully I get everything that he needs. I know I have almost everything I need either on a list or in the suitcase already.
So here’s a question for you... What type of packer are you? One that plans and makes lists? One that waits til the last minute to pack? Or somewhere in between?

What Are You Doing? Why?
Today’s installment of this thing I call my life is all about shit I deal with on the job.
Like I said, I am the office person for a event staffing company. To apply, you need to fill out an application. Some people who apply online notice that the first page is the online application. Most don’t complain about it, but there are the few that question if they have to fill out this paper app since they did it online. First of all, there’s like 10 pages to this paper application (tax forms, policy sign offs, and stuff like that). The online app is only the first page, but yes, we need a paper copy in the employee’s handwriting. After I explain that to them, they comply just fine.
BUT then there are the idiots that just cannot read. On the bottom of the first page says “FOR OFFICE USE ONLY” Most people notice that. But today, there was this one guy who decided to disregard it and fill it out anyways. Why? I have no clue. But that’s what whiteout is for, so I didn't say anything to him.
Further in the application is the I-9 Employment Eligibility Verification form. The front is for the employees to fill out. The bottom on the page says “Employer Completes Next Page” with little stop signs next to it. Most people didn’t notice it, its on the bottom under things that that most people don’t have to fill out, so I understood. I started highlighting in yellow the thing so people would notice it. Most people actually have. But like everything else, there is always those few that think they know better than the employer and fills it out. There is 2 reasons why the employer fills it out. 1. Half the time the employees have horrible handwriting, so this is the one place where I can write their name in handwriting that I can read. 2. I get a copy of their forms of ID so I can make sure the information is correct on there. I had this one guy, who from the beginning rubbed me the wrong way. I go to review his application, and notice that he filled out the back of the I-9. Like are you blind and can’t see the nice highlighter yellow on the page? I just let it go, but made sure to make a note in his file that I didn’t think he would work out well.
Speaking of that guy, let me tell you a little about him. He has worked in the event industry for a while, like most of the people working for us. Unlike most of the people working for us, he felt the need to ask if he can set his own rates, become a scheduler or supervisor right away, and make it clear that he didn’t want to travel to northern county because it “it would cost him $30 in gas just to get there, and potentially only make $50 that day.” First of all, this isn’t a freelance job where you set your own rates. You are getting hired into a company, we set your rates. Second, don’t put on the application “rates may be different depending on time of call.” We take that into consideration, as well as experience, job, and training, when we determine the rate for the employee. Next, you don’t ask to be a scheduler or supervisor at orientation. You are just starting to work for us. Those positions are for employees that have been with us for years and have proven that they are strong enough to be a supervisor and have proven they are dependable to be a scheduler. Marking on the application that you have had experience in those roles is one thing, but straight out asking is another. Lastly, I never have had an employee restrict themselves to only where they live, unless they didn’t have their own transportation. Most employees want to even possibly travel to other areas for jobs. So to say you don’t want to go up to northern county just because it isn’t worth it is stupid. Most of the time you are guaranteed at least $60 a job. Also, what car are you driving to where it cost you $30 to go up north a little. It doesn’t even take my husband’s truck 1/4 of a tank to get up and back. He is just a huge headache.
Today’s guy, the one that filled out the “FOR OFFICE USE ONLY” section is just confusing. He came in, first asked if he could use our bathroom, and said he was there to fill out an application. I showed him where the bathroom was. When he was done, he sat down, and asked if I spoke Spanish. I’m sorry, I’m as white as you can get. I speak some, but just enough to pass high school Spanish, even that I’ve forgotten most of it. I politely told him no, and he got to filling out the application. Disregarded the area that he wasn’t supposed to fill out. As he was filling out his application, two other people came in, so I had all of them move into the conference room, like I usually do. He comes out 10 minutes later, asking if we have a card. When I said business card, he said no put points to a business card he had in his wallet. I tell him no, he takes another app and starts to leave. He didn’t even ask if he could take an application home. It is polite to ask if you can take another application, especially when he already had one. I try to ask if he had a state id and social security card, because I need a copy for the I-9. He says no and starts walking to the door. I ask if I can have his completed app, he says no and walks out the door. I’m still puzzled as to why he would leave with both applications. I understand there was a language barrier, but he had 2 people he knew that was filling out the application with him, he could have asked them for help.
Those are just 2 examples of the worst people I have to deal with at work.

Soap = Hope
Recently I was told about this really cool website, Influenster. You sign up and start reviewing products. Based on what you review and the questions they ask you, they may send you a VoxBox with free items (yes, 100% free) for you to test out and review. Sounds like a really cool deal, right? Well, it actually is.
For my first VoxBox, I got the SoapBox. I was a little iffy when I got the box because it was a brand I had never heard of. Plus, I have dyed hair, so I always use color safe shampoo and conditioner. I received the Coconut Oil shampoo and conditioner. I tried it 2 days ago, and LOVE it! My hair is so soft! I didn't have to use as much conditioner as I usually do, so that’s a mega plus! Also, today, my hair still smells like coconuts. I think I am actually going to switch over to using SoapBox shampoo and conditioners.
I know, you hear all the time “try this product, I love it” so I get you may not want to actually try it just because I suggest it. But here is something that might help you decide to actually try it. On the back of each bottle, there is a code, “Hope Code”. If you go to  www.soapboxsoaps.com/hope and enter your code, SoapBox will provide clean water, soap, or vitamins to those in need. They send a lot of the donations overseas to third world countries. BUT the one thing they do differently than other companies is that they do proved soap to struggling families in homeless shelters, women shelters, and nursing homes in America. That, I think, is the best part of the company’s mission, helping out those in need here.
If you are interested in trying some SoapBox soaps, either go to Target or their website to check out their products. Yes, they have more than just shampoo and conditioner, and they have a variety of scents. They have hand soap, bar soap, and body wash as well. Their products are inexpensive ($4-$8). So next time you are needing shampoo, conditioner, soaps, try SoapBox out instead. I dare you!
